ERECTION PROCEDURE

( TANKS ) Rev. 01 SH. 2 of 5

1.0GENERAL
The subgrade for receiving the tank bottom shall be provided by the purchaser order, and shall be uniform and
level.

Lugs attached by welding to the exterior of the tank for the purpose of erection only shall be removed, and any
noticeable projection of weld metal shall be chipped from the plate. The plate shall not be gouged or torn in the
process of removing the lugs.

2.0LEVEL OF FOUNDATION
In order to achieve proper verticality of tie tank, it is very important that the foundation is perfectly levelled.
Foundation shall be inspected by the tank fabricator to ensure compliance with tolerances Specified in the
foundation drawing.
Relative levels in the peripheral area (where the tank shell is to rest) at a minimum of 8 points may be marked.
Relative levels of all the points may be checked by keeping one point as the reference point. Differences in
levels should not exceed limits given in the code / construction drawings.

3.0MARKING REFERENCE POINTS

Before sharing the mechanical erection, the following reference points are to be marked.

Elevation with reference to plant elevation has to be marked on the 8 points mentioned above on the
vertical face of the tank foundation slab to check the settlement of the foundation during a hydrostatic
test of the tank.

The "X" and "Y" axis of the tank should also be marked on the vertical face of the foundation, 0/ 360°,
90°, 180 ", and 270 " . These coordinates will later be the reference points for the marking of the tank
nozzles, etc. after transferring the same coordinates to the tank shell.

4.0WELDING DETAILS GENERAL

No welding of any kind shall be performed when the surfaces of the parts to be welded are wet from rain, snow,
or ice.

Each layer of weld metal or multilayer welding shall be cleaned of slag and other deposits before the next layer
is applied.

Tank welds used during the assembly of vertical joints of tank shells shall be removed and shall not remain in
the finished joints when the joints are welded manually.

Edges of all welds check API 650 / SECTION 5 / 5.2.1.4

Reinforcement of the welds check API 650 / SECTION 5 / 5.2.1.5

5.0ERECTION AND WELDING OF TANK BOTTOM

The bottom shall be assembled on top of the foundation according to the drawing.

ERECTION PROCEDURE

( TANKS ) Rev. 01 SH. 3 of 5

Cut the sketch plates according to the dimensions shown on the drawing.

Whatever a plate is Crossing a lap joint, the plate shall be joggled down to a shape which gives Sound contact
between plates.

Weld the short seams according to the welding details given in the drawing and the WPS.

Remove the strips after welding the root layer and then complete the joints. Avoid buckling due to shrinkage of
the welds .

Welding may be done with one or two welders on the same joint preferably alternative Seams should be welded.
Leave sufficient time in between welding two layers to avoid overheating.

Weld the long seams starting at the Centre according to the Welding details W3 given in the drawing and the
WPS. Use two welders to carry out the Welding from the Centre and progressing towards Outer edge.

Weld the alternate long seams.

After welding the alternate long seams, weld the balance long seams in the same manner as mentioned above.

All bottom joints are to be vacuum tested by the vacuum box method.

6.0ERECTION AND WELDING OF TANK SHELL

Mark the location of the shell on the annular plates, taking into account the welding gap of the vertical
welds of the first shell course.
Erect the first shell course at the location marked on the bottom locating the vertical weld joints as
per orientation given in the drawing. Give attention to the right location of the plates with the nozzles.
Adjust the plates of first course as per ASSEMBLING TOOLS
and fit up the vertical joints as per ASSEMBLING TOOLS.

The required tools shall be welded to the outside of the tank shell.
After proper alignment, tack weld the vertical joints 40 to 50 mm at every 250 mm.
Install the second shell course as prescribed for the first course.
After the erection and alignment of the second course the welding of the vertical joint of the first
shell

course shall be carried out according to the welding details given in the drawing and the WPS.
Use the same method to erect the third shell course.

After erection of the third shell course, the Curb Ring (Wind Girder) shall be mounted immediately.
After welding of the vertical joints of the first and second shell courses, carry out the tack welding
and the welding of the horizontal joints between these two shell courses.

After welding all joints (vertical and horizontal) within courses 1 to 3 the shell-to-bottom fillet welds
shall be carried out inside and outside together according to the drawing and WPS.
Carefully check the verticality and roundness of each shell course and ensure that tolerances are
maintained as per code.
All horizontal welds shall be performed by two or more welders 180° apart and welding in the same
direction ..
7.0 ERECTION AND WELDING OF CURB RING (WIND GIRDER)

Mark the location of the weld joints of the Curb Ring on the shell course according to the
orientation given in the drawing.

Erect and align the Curb Ring segments.

Weld the shell compression ring. Take precaution to avoid any distortion during the welding

8.0 INSTALLATION OF SHELL NOZZLES

Install and weld all the nozzles as indicated on the drawings.
Pads shall be pneumatically leak tested.

9.0 LADDER AND PLATFORM

Install and weld ladder and platform as per drawing.

10.0 NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTING (NDT)

NDT shall be carried out as specified in the welding procedure.

11.0 REMOVAL OF SCAFFOLDING

Remove all cleats, blank nuts and other temporary attachment by grinding and scaffold man.

12.0 HYDROTESTING

Hydrostatic testing shall be conducted according to code.

The test can only be performed when all the NDT requirements as per construction drawings I code
requirements are complete.
The following points may be checked and a joint inspection report will be done.

• Conformity of the construction tolerances.

• N. D. T. of welded joints.

11.1 Preliminary Works

Internal cleaning of tank.
Closing of all shell nozzle.
Connection of the water inlet and outlet to the tank by means of valves.
Mark the reference level at the tank shell at eight places and transfer the same to a nearby
structure. These markings are to be used for taking the foundation settlement readings.

11.2 Water Filling

The foundation settlement readings are to be checked at regular intervals .
Filling rate: Max. 0.2 m water level per hour.

The foundation will be determined by the site management. The measurements of the settlement
shall be performed as follows:

Reading prior to filling .

Reading approx. 24 hours after filling.

Reading after emptying.
