Question 2: What piece was your favorite? (10 points) Describe the piece (your favorite) in two
complete paragraphs (one-spaced or single spacing) The paragraphs must have at least 8 sen-
tences each. (30 points)
There were many pieces that I liked because all the pieces produced distinct sounds throughout
the performance. They ranged in different tempos while it demonstrated accelerando and de-
celerando throughout the performance. My favorite, it started with Mr. Bobby McFerrin giving a
short brief about the origin of the song. His father had an album called deep river where Haul
Johnson played a big part on bringing the spiritual tune of the songs in the album. The melody of
this song was bright and happy in some places within the song and more cool and relaxing in
other parts as the tempo changed and the notes of the trumpet were held for emphasis. There
were many dynamics used within this song. The song began with a crescendo from very soft to
very loud and then remained in this pattern until the end when the pattern was reversed. I liked
the way the performers played their own part to come up with very creative performances.
Right after the introduction about the song, the tuba, Trombone and other Aerophone instruments
start playing simultaneously for about two minutes. Then the Keyboard, the Bass, and the drum
Picked up the rhythm, respectively. At that moment, the crowd cheered and clapped. Then Mr.
Bobby join the orchestra Humming with a beautiful intro. In the middle of the song there was a
duet between the Bass and the keyboard played by Mr. Dan. He was able to synch his voice with
the orchestra as an instrument and it was outstanding. The orchestra was full of very disciplined
music professional that were playing the instruments flawlessly. The rhythm, which was continu-
ously steady seemed to get faster like a heart beat by the climax of the song. It was also at this
point that the dynamics of the song were increasingly getting louder until all instruments met at
the top with a bang and then changed the dynamics again to a moderate level until the song con-
cluded.
Question 3A: How would you evaluate the performance of the concert? (10 points)

Question 3B: Defend your box placement. Give reasons in two complete paragraphs (one-

The overall performance was very professional because the performers seem well prepared for
the concert. They all were playing in tune. The concert had a mixture of classical and popular mu-
sic, that flowed greatly with each other. The great thing is how each instrument is different but
created a great heterogenous sound ideal (instruments with different timbres). Each instrument
was played with ease and made it pleasant to the ears. With every new musical piece that was
played it flowed great onto the next. The sounds of the guitar, drums kit, and piano, and cello
gives a powerful effect to the performance to emphasize a dark tone to the fictional story behind
the music. There was a great balance between melody and harmony. The guitar part was the
melodic one and the rest of the instruments were creating a beautiful accompaniment.
The rhythm, which was continuously steady seemed to get faster like a heart beat by the climax
of the song. It was also at this point that the dynamics of the song were increasingly getting
louder until all instruments met at the top with a bang and then changed the dynamics again to a
moderate level until the song concluded. The dynamics throughout this song were soft and then
increased to a moderate level before a decrescendo to a softer level once again. The ensemble did
a fabulous job of keeping with the beat. This concert was an enjoyable experience full of great
music and intellectually stimulating experiences of music that I would not have listened to if not
for this assignment. Diversification is an important lesson to learn when viewing music because
all music has roots from another genre and recognizing this makes you more diversified as an in-
dividual. Generally speaking, the concert was epic, and I loved everything from the rhythm, the
instruments used and the expertise of those that were performing. Furthermore, I loved the way
the performers improvised each aspect to come up with very creative performances.
