OVERVIEW OF THE VISIT:
On Monday 27-01-2020 Indian Academy Degree College- Autonomous conducted an
industrial visit. A total number of 75 students has accompanied with the guidance of Mr.
Kesavan, Ms. Mary Magdalene. We left our college around 9:30 am and we reached the
industry by 12:30 a.m.
The first industry we visited was Coca-Cola which is located in Bidadi, Ramnagar.
Refreshments was providing to us by the company. We spent few hours in knowing about the
industries production process, which was explained by an employee(staff) of the industry.
Around 3 pm we headed to next company, it was a small-scale sector which involved in
production process of silk and silk related products.
After visiting the two industries we had our lunch and headed back to college campus by 7:30
pm.

PURPOSE OF THE VISIT:


 The main objectives of the visit were to relate our theoretical knowledge with
practical knowledge.
 To explore to different sectors like IT, manufacturing, sales, finance, marketing.
 It provides all the students an opportunity to interact with the working environment of
the companies, employees and its method.

COMPANY PROFILE OF COCA-COLA:


HISTORY OF COCA-COLA:
The industrial visit started at 12:45 pm on 27-01-2020, where Mr. XYZ has welcomed us to
Coca-Cola industry, He gave an introductory part of the company and mentioned that the
industry was established in 1993, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd in Bidadi
Industrial Area, which is an Atlanta originated company, founder of this company is Asa
Griggs Candler.
Coca cola is a top 5 FMCG (Fast moving consumer goods) company in India.
This industry focuses on servicing the customers both local and other parts of Bengaluru.
Their main motto is on customer satisfaction and services. In the near future, the business
aims to expand its line of products and services and cater to a larger client’s base in
Bengaluru. It is an effortless task in commuting and establishment as there are various modes
of transport readily available.

SAFETY HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICIES:


The Bidadi factory of HCCB is one of the earliest ones to have been established in the Bidadi
industrial area, on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The factory produces Mazza, Minute Maid
range of juices, Kinley packaged soda water and the entire range of sparkling drinks.
The Bidadi plant has always taken the extra steps towards environment, health and safety. It
is also a zero-discharge plant and uses waste water treatment for secondary purpose and for
land applications. This water is distributed within the factory and nearby green belt. The plant
uses solar power and clean energy, in addition to conventional sources of power to meet its
energy requirements.
The Bidadi plant also involves in the process of recycling the PET bottles. They are very
cautions in maintain the safety measures and hence all the procedure is carried out by the
machine which is fully automated.

OBJECTIVES OF VISIT:
 To study various operation and production of Coca-Cola.
 To know how machinery help in production process.
 To know the industrial environment.
 To have practical knowledge.

PRODUCT OF THE FIRM:
In general, Coca-Cola produces varieties of product in different states, the Bidadi plant
produces 10 varieties of soft drink including smart water and Kinley.
 Sprite.
 Thumps up.
 Kinley.
 Smart water.
 Minute Maid.
 Mazza.
 Coca-Cola.

The Bidadi plant has planned for launching a tetra pack line on March 2020. They have
18 plant across India, and in Bidadi they have 6 lines of RGB, filling is done at 15o degree
temperature for 1 to 1.5 liters of Coca-Cola. The plant has 2 PET based line for recycling
the bottles, and 1 Hot fill line (HFL) is used for fruit-based beverages.

COMPETITORS OF THE COMPANY:


Major competitors of Coca-Cola are:
1. PepsiCo.
2. Red Bull.
3. Nestle.
4. Parle.
5. Mountain Due.

PRODUCTION PROCESS:
Production process involves in two major process/operations:
 Creating and packaging material.
 Bottling and canning the finished drink.
The Bidadi plant production is based on the seasons.
During the On-Seasons that is between January to July the total production process involves
in manufacturing 1,20,000 cases per day where as during the Off-Season the plant produces
90,000 cases per day.

1. TREATMENT OF WATER:
The main ingredients in carbonated soft drink are water, sugar and beverage-based
concentrates. Water is passed through Multiple Barrier Treatment System to ensure that
every beverage bottle confirms to the Coca-Cola global standards and WHO drinking water
guidelines.
The Multiple Barrier Treatment system consist of macro and micro level of purification of
water, including process such as sand, carbon filtration, nano filtration in order to eliminate
the chemical and bacterial impurities, reduce alkalinity of water, and removes dissolve solids.
Additional disinfection process like UV treatment and chlorination of water are also
undertaken, after all this process the water is ready for next stage.
The Bidadi plant uses Kaveri water for water treatment plan, carbonate water is also used for
A-rated drinks, there involves a process of sensory testing, GV is used to measure the amount
of CO2 in water and brick is used to measure the amount of sugar in the water.
For Coca-Cola the GV is 5.6.

2. TREATMENT FOR SYRUP:


Hot carbon treatment is involved to remove the turbidity, off odour from the sugar. To
achieve this powered activated carbon is used which absorbs the impurity and the colour in
sugar which is further pasteurized with heat treatment to remove microbes.
During this process microbial test are conducted for the syrup, colour and concentration and
sedimentation is also checked along the process, the preparation is ready and it is used for
filling the bottles.

The filling of bottle is done in different case
 RGB one case 24 bottles. (half a liter bottles)
 If the bottle is 1- 1.5 liters than in one case 9 bottles can be filled at one stretch.

3. TREATMENT OF JUICE PULIP:


The Bidadi plant produces Minute Maid ranges, and Mazza. The sugar syrup and water
remain the same, they add flavor to the drink depending upon the product line the beverage is
homogenized. This beverage undergoes a pasteurization process at 85o Celsius.
Hot fill line is a fruit-based beverage, here the filling is done for Minute Maid ranges, to
produce the bottle for fruit-based beverage has to undergo the heating process of 35o-40o
degree.
They are different ranges in Minute Maid manufactured by HCCB includes:
 Orange.
 Lemon.
 Litchi.
 Guava.
 Apple.

BOTTLE INSPECTION:
Returnable Glass Bottles (RGB) are inspected and cleaned before re-filling it. In Bidadi plant
there are 6 line for RGB. The recycling bottles are washed through automated process, for
each bottle it involves 5 rinse of water. Cleaning, inspecting, damages are deducted by
Electronic Bottle Inspection Technology. Where this technology rejects the damaged
bottles.
600 bottles per unit in each inspection.
The bottles are divided into L1 and L3
The molding is done by heating at 150o.
L1 thin mold group.
L3 thick mold group if bottles are L3 than reject the bottle.
The bottles are cleaned with chlorinate soft water.

PET BOTTLES:
PET bottles are blown from Preforms, which are made from Resins approved by Coca-Cola.
Before filling either the Preforms are cleaned with filtered air or the bottles are cleaned with
chlorinated water. There are 2 PET based line in Bidadi plant.

PACKAGING:
PET BOTTLES:
PET bottles are preferred for packaging for many products because it is one of the most
convenient, safe, and cost- effective package. They can be easily molded into all kind of
shapes.

RETURNABLE GLASS BOTTLE (RGB):

A lot of beverage manufactured in HCCB are packaged in RGB. This glass is 100%
recyclable and reusable after cleaning. They use Ink Coding, because it is not permanent.

SMALL BOTTLES:
HCCB created lighter bottles for longer use, it is a 250 ml PET bottle that maintain atheistic
appeal and product quality protection. Which is cost efficient for the buyer to buy the
product.

DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL:
The Bidadi plant follows First in First Out (FIFO), distribution channel. The sale
representatives go on a daily round in the market and collect the information regarding the
distribution process and understand the demand for the product in the market.
A typical distribution chain of HCCB would be:
Production  Plant Warehouse Deport Warehouse Distribution Warehouse Retail
stock Retail Shelf customer.

GROUP OBSERVATION:
We observed that HCCB team follows color code which represent different department.
Red Workshop.
Yellow Quality department.
Orange Shipping.

BLUE Admin, Washroom.
Green All area accessible.
We observed the production process that has explained previously, filling of juices and
smart, recycling of Bottles and distribution Warehouse, where most of the work is carried out
with the help of machinery system. (automated process)
We observed that there are different teams in Bidadi plant like
 Maintenance team.
 Quality team.
 Shipping team.
 Production team.
 Visitor team.
We even noticed that organization has (MTTR) Mean Time to Repair, it reflects how quickly
the organization can solve/repair the sudden breakdown or failure of machine.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION:


The Bidadi plant of Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages has been awarded a five-star rating by
confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Environment health and safety award in 2017.
The Bidadi plant received National Award for Manufacturing Competitiveness in 2019.

CSR ACTIVITIES:
UPLIFITING ENTREPRENURSHIP:
HCCB’s Entrepreneurship Development program helps to train local community members to
run their business. HCCB has tied up with Centre of Entrepreneur Development of Karnataka
and conducted various program in village like Abbanakuppe, Jogardoddi, Medanahalli.

MODEL VILLAGE:
HCCB improves facility of water, Health and Sanitation, Education, Agriculture etc. to the
nearby located area of Bidadi.

ENCOURAGING EDUCATION:
In partnership with Panchayats, and local administration HCCB took initiative to repair the
school, new desk was added, library, and books, bags were given to students.

SCOPE OF INDUSTRIAL VISIT:


o Industrial visit bring clarity to important management concepts, where all the student
gets a chance to exposure the working procedure of industry.
o It provides an opportunity for the students to identify their field of interest.
o Since Industrial Visit are planned in various sectors it is easy for the students to
understand the concepts easily.

CONCLUSION:
I had a very good experience in visiting the Coca-Cola plant, as I had the opportunity to learn
and relate both theoretical and practical environment.
All my questions were answered by the employee who was in charge for explaining about the
manufacturing procedure.
A detail explanation was given on cleaning the bottles and chemical involved in it.
A detail information of total number of productions was also explained by the staff.
Overall, I enjoyed my visit to Coca-Cola, I get a chance of learning the production process
involved in it.

COMPANY PROFILE OF SILK FACTORY:
The next company we visited was silk factory, located in the Ramnagar. It is a small-scale
sector, where less than 25 employees were engaged in the working process of silk
manufacturing industry. This sector had 10 machines for the work in progress. The small-
scale industry which is located in Ramnagar also involves in exporting to different countries
like china, Japan etc.
They also involved in distributing their silk product to the local shops.

VISION:
 To provide the employment opportunities to the rural people.
 To develop the Rural people.
 To ensure optimal utilization of resources.

MISSION:
 Creating and providing knowledge.
 Help in developing new Entrepreneurs.

OBJECTIVE OF VISIT:
 To understand the working process of small-scale industry.
 To relate it to the theoretical study.
 To understand availability of facilities, materials etc.

PRODUCT OF FIRM:
The small-scale industry which is located in Ramnagar, involves in producing the products
like Dhoti, Sarees, Dupattas.

This silk is converted into dhoti, saree, dupattas.

COMPETITORS:
The competitors of small-scale silk industry involve the textile produced by the large-
scale companies like:
 Ramraj.
 Pixel clothing.

PRODUCTION PROCESS:

1. THREAD EXTRACTION:
The cocoons are placed into the boiling water in order to soften and dissolve the gum that is
holding the cocoons together. This is a crucial step in silk production process as it ensures
that there is no damage to the continuity of each thread. Each thread is than carefully reeled
from the cocoon in individual long thread, which are than wound on a reel.

2. SPINNING:
The traditional spinning wheel has been an integral part of silk production process, the
process of spinning essential unwinds the dyed fibers on to bobbin, so that they lay flat ready
for the waving process.

3. WEAVING:
Weaving is the process in which the final peace of silk come together. Generally, weaving
involves interlacing two set of threads so that they lock around each other and create a strong,
uniform piece of fabric. The threads will be woven at right angles at each other, and the two
different angles are called as wrap and weft.
The wrap will run up and down the fabric, while the weft runs across it.

4. FINISHING:
Finishing the piece of silk gives it that highly lustrous sheen that is commonly known for,
which can be used readily in hand.

DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL:
The Silk factory adopts direct selling its products to the near by local retailers, wholesalers or
directly the customers. Since it’s a small-scale production sector hence the distribution
channel is restricted to local areas and export to countries of china and Japan.

GROUP OBSERVATION:
The silk factory was two stories building and in the ground floor the machine was kept,
where the production process involved with a total number of 10 machines, less than 20
people were employed in waving the silk. In the top floor the spinning of silk was taking
place, segregating it into a single thread and a small room for storage of finished products.

CONCLUSION:
I had good experience at spending time in learning the production process of silk in a small
scale.
They help in providing employment opportunities to the rural people.
Overall, I had a good experience in learning about the small-scale production their pros and
cons.
