Assignment 4

The document contains 3 engineering design problems involving the calculation of structural properties such as torque, shear capacity, moments and reinforcement requirements for beams, slabs and restrained beams given loadings, dimensions and material properties. Calculations are shown for uniform torque, critical torque, threshold torsion, shear capacity, maximum loading, critical shear, critical span, reinforcement spacing, steel area and slab thickness.

Problem 1: The framing plan shown is subjected to deadload of 7kPa and liveload of 8kPa. The compressive
strength f’c=28MPa, fy=345 MPa, stirrups=10 mm, rebar size=25mm, and concrete cover=40mm. The column is
600mm by 600mm, beam is 350mm by 550mm and slab thickness is 150mm. Using seismic design
consideration, assuming one layer of bar arrangements and using approximate analysis for the design shear
and moment, calculate the following for beam AB: See Figure 1
a. The uniform torque in the beam in kN.m/m.____10.514
b. The critical torque Tu in kN.m.___________33.776
c. The threshold torsion ∅ Tth in kN.m._______8.11
d. The value of the equation below for check size in MPa. ______2.185

e. The area of shear reinforcement necessary for torsion in mm2/mm._____0.642

f. The area of longitudinal reinforcement for torsion in mm2.______924.48

Problem 2: The restrained beam shown carries a uniformly distributed load of Wu kN/m. Using f’c=21MPa,
fy=420MPa, concrete cover=40mm, diameter of stirrups=10mm and considering seismic provision of the code,
determine the following: See Figure 2
a. The shear capacity of concrete Vc in kN.__________108.092
b. The maximum value of Wu in so that the given size is adequate in shear in kN.m. _____157.862
c. The critical shear Vu corresponding to the maximum Wu in kN._______400.575
d. The critical span x in mm._________2486.457
e. The final spacing within x in mm rounded to the nearest 5mm. _______70
f. The number of hoops within x rounded to the nearest whole number. _______35
g. The final spacing beyond x in mm rounded to the nearest 5mm. ___________230

Problem 3: The section of a solid one-way slab is shown in the figure. The concrete has a unit weight of 17.9
kN/m3 and f’c=21MPa, while the reinforcing steel to be used has a strength of fy=345MPa, rebar=10mm and
concrete cover is 20mm. If L 1=1.5 m, L2=4.0 m, superimposed DL=0.667kPa and LL=2.40kPa, determine the
following: See Figure 3
a. The thickness of the entire slab rounded to the nearest 5mm._______150
b. Uniform ultimate load in the slab in kN/m._____________7.862
c. Maximum negative moment in the slab in kN.m.___________8.844
d. Required steel area necessary to support the maximum negative moment in mm2._____232
e. Governing spacing of reinforcement in mm._______260
