Introduction:
Commencing our clinical training, we, the first-year MSc Nursing students specializing in Medical Surgical
Nursing, commenced our posting at Government Medical College Bakshi Nagar Jammu on March 11, 2024.
Established in 1973, Government Medical College Jammu stands as a leading institution in Jammu & Kashmir,
initially starting in a temporary building with the mission to impart quality education and healthcare services to the
region's populace. Situated in the heart of Jammu, the college's initial objective was to train fifty MBBS students
annually and serve as a referral hospital for the Jammu province. Over time, the institution expanded its capacity
to accommodate up to 180 students annually.
GMC houses various clinical departments including Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedics, Radiology, Blood Bank, and
Anesthesiology within its six-floor building and basement.
Basement:
The basement hosts Emergency services encompassing radiotherapy, oncology, and physiotherapy.
Emergency Department:
Operating around the clock, the Emergency Department offers a range of services including reception, patient
registration, resuscitation, disaster ward, blood bank, laboratory services, forensic medicine, and casualty care.
Additionally, it provides round-the-clock access to X-ray, ultrasound, spinal CT, ECG, and wound dressing
facilities.
Ground Floor:
The ground floor accommodates the recovery ward and radiology services such as CT-scan and MRI. It also
serves as the hub for information regarding admitted patients.
First Floor:
The first floor houses the administration block, accommodating hospital administrative offices.
Second Floor:
This floor hosts departments like cardiology ICU, CCU, anesthesia, pharmacology, and therapeutics.
Third Floor:
Dialysis unit for renal failure patients and surgery wards, specifically ward no. 5 for post-surgical care, are located
on the third floor.
Fourth Floor:
Ward no. 11 and the burn ward are situated on the fourth floor, catering to burn patients' needs.
Fifth Floor:
The fifth floor is home to the general laboratory, where various tests, including hematological and urological, are
conducted in different sections.
Sixth Floor:
Microbiology department and a museum showcasing human body specimens are located on the sixth floor.
Staffing Pattern:
The administrative setup of GMC Jammu comprises individuals such as Vijay Kumar (Director), Mamta Devi
(KAS) (Chief Officer), Sanjay Nagri (Accounts Officer), Jivtesh Singh (Chief Accounts Officer), Dr. Ashutosh
Gupta (Principal), Dr. Shashi Sudan Sharma (Medical Superintendent), and Dr. Rayees (Medical Record Officer).
Conclusion:
Accompanied by our clinical instructor Mr. Tariq Dev and Miss Masrat Arif, I commenced my posting at
Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC) Jammu. Assigned to the neurosurgery department, I found the
hospital staff commendable and observed the institution's primary focus on providing optimal care to its patients.
Through this experience, I gained insights into various diseases and their treatment modalities. Under the guidance
of my clinical instructor, I feel well-prepared to contribute effectively within the hospital environment.
