The spatula-tailed hummingbird,
wonderful hummingbird, or admirable
hummingbird (Loddigesia mirabilis) is a
species of medium-sized hummingbird
(up to 15 cm) with blue, green, and copper
colors and a violet crest. This bird is
endemic to the Utcubamba River basin, in
the high jungle of northern Peru. It was
first described in 1853 by bird collector
Andrew Matthews for George Loddiges.

experts to be the most extravagant hummingbird

in the world and stands out for its extravagant tail,
Diurnal whose feathers change color from time to time.
They possess four feathers: two smaller,
straight ones in the middle, and two larger
ones with wide tips resembling open
rackets that intersect, culminating in a
sizable blue-violet disc movable
independently of their body.
The female does not have colors as bright
as the male; it is somewhat smaller and
lacks the two longest feathers in the tail.
Despite its importance for Peru, there is no agenda focused on its
conservation, and its habitat is being threatened by deforestation.
It is estimated that its current population is less than 1,000
individuals, and that in the coming years, its habitat could be
reduced by 60%, reducing its population by half. For these
reasons, it is in danger of extinction.
