ENGINE -- GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Purpose
The powerplant supplies the thrust to move the airplane and gives the pneumatic
and mechanical power for the different airplane systems.

General Description
The CFM56-3 is a high-bypass turbofan engine with an axial-flow dual-rotor. The
powerplant has:
- Inlet cowl
- Basic engine
- Thrust reverser
- Exhaust plug.

The integrated fan and booster (low pressure compressor) turn by the low pressure
turbine. A high pressure turbine turns the high pressure compressor.

The two rotors mechanically operate independently of each other.

Air that goes in the engine divides into a primary and a secondary airstream. The low
and high pressure compressors compress the primary airstream. Combustion of fuel
in the annular combustion chamber increases the air velocity to turn the turbines.

- Sta 15 - fan frame discharge
- Sta 20 - primary flow inlet
- Sta 23 - low pressure compressor discharge
- Sta 24 - variable bleed valve air outlet
- Sta 25 - high pressure compressor inlet
- Sta 30 - high pressure compressor discharge
- Sta 36 - combustion chamber inlet
- Sta 40 - combustion chamber discharge
- Sta 41 - high pressure turbine inlet
- Sta 42 - high pressure turbine discharge
- Sta 48 - low pressure turbine inlet
- Sta 49.5 - stage 2 low pressure turbine inlet
- Sta 50 - low pressure turbine discharge.

ENGINE -- BOROSCOPE PORTS

Purpose
The boroscope gives a system for visual inspection of the different engine parts that
turn.

General Description
It is necessary that the engine boroscope inspection have an access to the parts that
turn through the engine case. Access ports are available for these parts:
- Booster - one port
- High pressure compressor - nine ports
- Combustion chamber - 4 ports and two igniter bosses
- High and low pressure turbines - five ports.

It is necessary to remove the boroscope plugs from the ports as a part of the
inspection preparation. You use the manual rotation pad to turn the engine manually
during the inspection.

You can examine the leading edges of the fan blades and the trailing edges of the
last stage of the turbine blades without the use of the boroscope.

ENGINE -- N2 ROTOR ROTATION PAD COVER INSTALLATION

Purpose
You use the rotation pad to manually rotate the compressor and turbine assembly of
the core engine section. You must do this rotation during the boroscope inspection
of the rotating parts.

Location
The rotation pad and cover are on the forward face of the accessory gearbox above
the starter.

Operation
You do these things to use the rotation pad:
- Remove the pad cover (5 bolts)
- Install 3/4 inch square drive
- Install a 2 foot long breaker bar into the drive
- Rotate the compressor/turbine.

CAUTION:
DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED TORQUE OR ENGINE PARTS MAY BE
DAMAGED.

fittings that connect with the fan frame.

Physical Description
The accessory gearbox assembly has:
- Radial drive shaft
- Transfer gearbox
- Horizontal drive shaft
- Accessory gearbox.

The radial drive shaft assembly is horizontally in the fan frame at the 9:00 position. It
transmits torque from the high pressure compressor to the transfer gearbox.

The transfer gearbox (TGB) assembly supplies transmission from the radial drive
shaft to the horizontal drive shaft.

The horizontal drive shaft assembly supplies power transmission between the
transfer gearbox and the accessory gearbox (AGB). It includes the horizontal
drive shaft housing and a horizontal drive shaft.

ENGINE -- FAN - GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Purpose
The function of the fan is to accelerate the air directed to the engine secondary
airflow. This results in producing approximately 78% of the total engine thrust.

Location
The fan is at the front of the engine.

General Description
There are 38 titanium alloy fan blades, each blade is approximately 22 inches long.
The fan blades have an integral mid-span shroud.

Each fan blade has a dovetail base that engages into the matching disk slot. The
interlocking mid-span shrouds provide increased blade assembly stiffness.

Blades are individually retained in position by a blade retainer and a spacer.

Training Information Point

Blade retainers are used to limit the axial movement of the blade. Once the blade
has been loaded in the disk slot and abuts on the booster spool front flange, the
blade retainer is pushed upwards into the lock recess in the disk rim. This prevents
the blade from moving forward.

Spacers are used to limit the radial movement of the blade and its retainer. The
spacer is inserted in the gap between the blade base and the bottom of the disk slot.
This positions the blade outwards and also prevents the blade retainer from dropping
out. Axial restraint of the spacers is achieved when the spinner rear cone is
attached.
