HAND BALL
HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT:
Handball game was introduced in
Germany by a Gymnastic master called
Korad Koch. The Greeks and Romans
called Handball “CATCHBALL”. In
1919, Carl Schelonz was the first to call
the game “HANDBALL”. He designed
uniform rules for the game.
Carl Schelonz was a Physical Education
in Berlin, Germany where he reduced
the size of the field that was so large to
40m by 20m. This earned him the name
“Father of Handball”, since then the
dimension has been adopted as an
international size. The first match was
played between Austria and Germany in
September 1925. Handball is both
indoor and outdoor game. The game was
first introduced into the Olympics of
1936 at Berlin and in 1972 held in
Germany. In 1972, Handball Federation
of Nigeria was formed. In 1976, Nigeria
first took part in the Olympics that was
held in Montreal, Canada.
NATURE OF THE GAME
Handball can be played by all ages.
Rules are not many compared with other
ball games.
Handball is played on a “Hard court” or
Green mgrass.
Its skills are natural e.g. running,
jumping, dodging, throwing and
catching.
Handball is a simple game and technical.

headquarters in Brussels.

THE BALL
The ball is made of leather or a synthetic
material. It must be spherical. The
surface must not be shiny or slippery. It
must weigh between 425-427gm for
men, and its circumference is 58-60cm.
For women, the weight is 325-400gm
and its circumference shall be 54-56cm.
PLAYERS: Handball is played by two
teams, 7 players make up a team, (that is
6 court players, 1 goalkeeper) and is
allowed 5 substitutes. 14 players play the
game at a time -12 court players and 2
goalkeepers.
DURATION: The game shall be played
in two halves of 30minutes each with a
break of 10minutes.
THE GAME: Before the start of the
game, the referee shall toss for each
teams. The game is started at the centre
of the court with a “throw off”. All
players must remain in their own half of
the court and the defender shall be 3m
away from the starting team.
DIMENSION: The handball game is
played on a rectangular court of 40m
long and 20m wide. The longer
boundary shall be called “TOUCH
LINES” or “SIDE LINES”, while the
shorter boundary shall be called
“GOAL”.
THE GOALS: The goals shall be placed
at the centre of each goal line. A gal
consists of upright posts equidistant
from the corners of the playing area, 3m
apart and 2m high. A goal cannot be
scored directly from a throw-off or
centre pass.
What is a goal in Handball game?
A goal is scored when a ball has
completely crossed the goal line between
the two upright posts. i.e. goal posts
under the cross bar either in the air or on
the ground.
SUBSTITUTIONS: A substitute may
enter the game or court of play at any
time without notification of the scorer,
timekeeper or referee. The player to be
replaced leaves the court before the
substitutes enters from the substitution
area.
TIME OUT: A time out is awarded
when:
A 2-minutes suspension, disqualification
is given.
A 7metre throw is awarded.
A team time out is granted.
There is a faulty substitution or an extra
player enters the court.
There is a whistle signal from the time
keeper.
There is an injury.

participate in the game enters the court.
If a player commits a foul which
endangers the opponent’s health.
If a player assaults a team official.
If some players receive three suspension
order, he is disqualified.
A player or team official could be
disqualified for the entire remainder of
the playing time.
