TURN-OF-NUT Method: PRETENSIONING PROCEDURE

VERIFICATION TESTING per Specification for Structural Joints Using
A
ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts, Para. 8.2 & & 9.2.1
(PIP STS05130, Para. 6.5.1)

A calibrated tension calibrator shall be onsite when tightening is to be

performed on pretensioned joints and slip-critical joints. 12-SAMSS-008,
A1
(AISC Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A325 or A490 Sec. I
Bolts, Para. 3.2.1 & PIP STS05130, Para. 6.5.1)

Prior to application, the bolted joint assembly was brought to snug tight
condition. (NOTE: The connected plies are in firm contact after using a
12-SAMSS-008,
A2 few impacts of an impact wrench or the full effort of an ironworker using
Sec. I
an ordinary spud wrench.) {AISC Specification for Structural Joints
Using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts, Para. 8.2.1}

A representative sample of three complete fastener assemblies of each

combination of diameter, length, grade and lot to be used in the work
12-SAMSS-008,
A3 shall be checked at the site of installation in a tension calibrator. (AISC
Sec. I
Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts,
Para. 3.2.1 & PIP STS05130, Para. 7.2)

Washers are used in the pre-installation verification assemblies as

12-SAMSS-008,
A4 required in the work. (AISC Specification for Structural Joints Using
Sec. I
ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts, Para. 3.2.1 & PIP STS05130, Para. 7.2)

The pre-installation verification procedure testing is performed using

fastener assemblies that are representative of the condition of those that 12-SAMSS-008,
A5
will be pretensioned in the work. (AISC Specification for Structural Joints Sec. I
Using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts, Para. 8.2)

Fastener assemblies are match-marked after the initial fit-up or snug-

12-SAMSS-008,
A6 tight of the joint but prior to pretensioning. (Specification for Structural
Sec. I
Joints Using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts, Para. 9.2.1)

The test has verified that the pretensioning method developed a

pretension that is equal to or greater than 1.05 times that specified for
12-SAMSS-008,
A7 installation and inspection in Table 8.1 in Attachment 1 of this checklist.
Sec. I
(Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts,
Para. 7.2)

NOTE: If the actual pretension developed in any of the fastener assemblies is less than 1.05 times that specified for installation and
inspection in Table 8.1 in Attachment 1 of this checklist, the cause(s) shall be determined and resolved before the fastener
assemblies are used in the work. (AISC Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts, Para. 7.2)
