What is prescription Reading?

Prescription reading “typically” refers to the practice of prescribing and using corrective lens
such as eyeglasses or contact lens to improve persons conditions like myopia, Hyperopia and
presbyopia. As a result, they may need prescription reading glasses to help them see more
clearly and other task. These prescription lenses are designed to address the specific vision
needs of the individual and the prescription is determined by an eye care professional during an
eye examination.

Note:
❖ presbyopia is a common age-related vision condition that typically becomes noticeable
in your 40 or early 50s.
❖ Myopia is an eye condition where a person can see nearby objects clearly but has
difficulty seeing distant objects.
❖ Hyperopia is an eye condition in which distant objects are seen more clearly than nearby
objects.

Case study

One morning a 45-year-old woman was sewing a dress and notice she wasn’t seeing clearly at a
closer distant as she used to see 6 months ago.
She waited for a week and still noticed it was the same.
So, she decided to visit the clinic for a checkup.

She stated the following symptoms:

❖ Increase in eye strain.


❖ Headaches.
❖ Difficulty focusing on closer objects.
❖ Needing brighter lighting for reading and other task.

❖ Multi focal glass
❖ Use brighter lighting.

Note: Multi focal glasses have two or more prescriptions in one lens allowing clear
visions at different distances.

NOTE: OD means oculus dexter (right eye)


OS means oculus sinister (left eye)
SPH mean Sphere.
CYL mean Cylinder.
ADD mean Additional.
PD mean pupillary distance.

Roles and responsibilities of a pharmacy assistant

➢ Be kind and cooperative with patient.


➢ Use and maintain pharmacy equipment and technology.
➢ Greeting and assisting customers.
➢ Data entry: Accurately entering patient’s information and prescription details into
the pharmacy computer system.
