Solving Problems Involving
Quadratic Functions
Financial Example
• Let 𝑥 represent the number of items being sold.
• Demand Function 𝑝 𝑥 : A function that relates the price, to the
number of items made / sold.
• Revenue Function 𝑅 𝑥 : - Amount of money brought in from sales.
-𝑅 𝑥 =𝑝 𝑥 ×𝑥
• Cost Function 𝐶 𝑥 : A function that relates the cost of production to
the number of items made / sold.
• Profit Function 𝑃 𝑥 : - Amount of money “taken home” by company.
-𝑃 𝑥 =𝑅 𝑥 −𝐶 𝑥
• The break-even quantity represents the number of items sold that
will make a profit of zero. 𝑃 𝑥 = 0
𝑃 𝑥 =𝑅 𝑥 −𝐶 𝑥 =𝑝 𝑥 ×𝑥−C 𝑥
= −6𝑥 + 40 𝑥 − (4𝑥 + 48) GOAL: To find the vertex.
= −6𝑥 2 + 40𝑥 − 4𝑥 − 48
= −6𝑥 2 + 36𝑥 − 48
= −6 𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 8
= −6 𝑥 − 2 𝑥 − 4
The zeros of the function are 2 and 4.
The 𝑥 − value of the vertex must be in the middle.
2+4
ℎ= =3
2
𝑘 = 𝑃 3 = −6 3 − 2 3 − 4 = 6
The vertex is 3,6 .
The magazine will produce a maximum profit of
$6000 when 3000 of them are sold.
Ex: A rectangular field with an area of 425 𝑚2 is enclosed by 100 𝑚 of fencing.
Determine the dimensions of the field to the nearest tenth of a metre.
Let 𝑥 and 𝑦 be the length and width of the rectangle.
𝐴 = 𝑥𝑦 = 425 2𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 100 𝑦
𝑥 50 − 𝑥 = 425 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 50
50𝑥 − 𝑥 2 = 425 𝑦 = 50 − 𝑥
𝑥
0 = 𝑥 2 − 50𝑥 + 425
−𝑏 ± 𝑏2 − 4𝑎𝑐
𝑥1,2 =
2𝑎
− −50 ± −50 2 − 4(1)(425)
𝑥1,2 =
2(1)
50 ± 800
𝑥1,2 =

50 ± 20 2 Note: The function 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 2 − 50𝑥 + 425 can be expressed
𝑥1,2 =
2 as 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 − 25 + 10 2 𝑥 − 25 − 10 2 or
𝑥1,2 = 25 ± 10 2
approximately as 𝑓 𝑥 ≐ 𝑥 − 39.1 𝑥 − 10.9 .
𝑥1 ≐ 39.1 and 𝑥2 ≐ 10.9
When 𝑥 = 39.1, 𝑦 = 50 − 39.1 = 10.9
When 𝑥 = 10.9, 𝑦 = 50 − 10.9 = 39.1
The field’s dimensions are 39.1 𝑚 by 10.9 𝑚.
