Module 2 - Good Citizenship Values

I. Cite personal incidents / moments in your life that you feel you have become:

1. Maka-Diyos
I grew up in a family of a Christian-Catholic, so since I was young, I am aware that we have
God—who is watching over us. We pray before meals daily, go to church every Sunday, and
occasionally, we pray the Rosary. But, when I was young, it felt like, it was just like an obligation to
pray or to hear mass. So, it came to a point where I don’t participate in these “activities” anymore.
Until 1 Sunday, during the Father’s mass, it flashed it the screen that our church will have a weekend
seminar which called PREX (Parish Renewal Experience). My Mom was ecstatic to sign us up in this
said seminar, together with my 2 other siblings. However, I, myself, were also so curious and
interested in the seminar. It was a 3-day seminar in our church where they conducted activities that
harnessed in the ways and words of God. Through PREX, that was the moment where I felt the grace
of the Lord. How I am so unworthy of the things that I have in my life. I also was able to treasure the
gift of family—it really felt so overwhelming to be able to experience all those grace and blessings
alongside with my siblings. I also learned how to be so contended with the life God has given me and
my family, for other’s had it worse. Since then, I get involved to other activities in our church and pray,
not just when I need something, but also to give thanks.

2. Makatao
I came from a very humbled family; my father who had rough childhood for not having a
privilege to study; my mother who came from a 12-member family. So, growing up, we were raised as
“magtiis mamalugtod kung maikli ang kumot”, although my father had a decent paying job in the city
hall, we still don’t get to have a very comfortable life, because I have 5 siblings. With that being said,
my parents also raised us by always being considerate of others—to always check if meron pa ba ang
iba, being helpful to those in need, and being kind and respectful, not just to elders but to all ages.
Those teachings and experiences from my parents have become a very important part of my life as
being makatao. I always get the notion of “ang bait bait mo kasi”, to be honest, it has a negative
effect on me, but for me, just being people person will always bring you to the brighter side and lead
you to the quality of life. Even if the world is so mean to you, wag kang gaganti. And as long as, wala
akong tinatapakan na tao, I know I am in the right side of humanity. And being makatao, gives you an
inner peace of mind that you owe to yourself.
3. Maka-kalikasan
Both my parents have green-thumb, so, I grew up in a home where there’s plants, fruit-
bearing trees, and flowers in our backyard and garden. Since I was young, I am already aware that
nature has its own life that we need to take care of. So now that I am grown up, I always make sure
that I help the nature in my little own ways. Like using reusable straw, recyling plastics at home and
use it as a trashbag, and segregating our garbage. I am also an advocate of conserving electricity,
most especially if not in use and also teaching kids in the family to conserve the water, because every
drop counts.
4. Maka-bansa / maka-bayan
If you wan’t change for the
country, you need to start the change within yourself.
