Understanding English Suffixes Explained

The document discusses English suffixes -tion and -sion and provides rules for when to use each one. It explains that both suffixes are used to form nouns from verbs, but -tion is used if the verb ends in -ate or has a consonant before the suffix, while -sion is used in other cases like if the verb ends in -d, -de, or has letters like l, n or r before the suffix. Examples are provided to illustrate the rules.

British Council: Suffixes in English

hello once again this presentation I'm going to talk about suffixes which
once again will not be unusual to Ukrainian learners as they exist in both
Ukrainian and Russian as opposed to prefixes which change the meaning of
the word suffixes tend to change the grammar of a word so this means they
can turn and now into an adjective without affecting the meaning let's take
the example of success which means achieving something or doing well the
word success which is a noun can be turned into an adjective successful by
the use of the suffix full success is the now successful as the adjective
however the basic meaning of good achievement is not changed here's a
list of four suffixes used to make adjectives full and I see why can you think
of words with those suffixes well for example beauty becomes beautiful
now to an adjective differ the verb turns into different hero the now turns
into heroic the adjective and health of the now becomes healthy the
adjective there are also a whole host of suffixes to make verbs or adjectives
into nouns meant less ility for example politicians govern a country by
forming a government the noun people are kind adjective by showing
kindness the noun and if somebody is very good at something they are
able in other words they have a lot of ability we also have other suffixes to
make nouns iron ship ism iron for example determination from determine
friend the noun can be turned into another noun friendship friend is the
person friendship is the concept the idea and we also have a very popular
suffix ism which usually denotes or means some kind of political or religious
belief for example Catholics follow Catholicism businessmen and business
women often follow the laws of capitalism sometimes ISM can become an
East to denote the person for example going back to capitalism people who
believe in capitalism very strongly are called capitalists finally there are two
suffixes well I'd like to look at which are interesting the first one is less
which does to a certain extent change the meaning therefore going against
the rule of most other suffixes so for example we talked about the word
hope which is encouraging something good but if you talk about a
hopeless situation that changes the meaning and it becomes a situation
that has no solution the other suffix that I'd like to talk about is a recently
or relatively modern one and it's ish and it's used in very informal situations
to mean about or sort of or not exactly so for example you could describe
your friend as a large ish person meaning not very large but quite large you
could also arrange to meet your colleagues for lunch at one ish or 1:30 ish
which means about or around 1:00 or 1:30 that's the end of my
presentation I wish you luck with your future studies and learning of English

Hello, my name is Amelia. In this video we will look at how to take words
you already know and make them into new words. All you have to do is add
a few letters before the word. These are called prefixes. Or add a few letters
after a word. These are known as suffixes. Here's an example. place, replace,
replacement Be careful - you can't do this with all vocabulary, but you can
have fun experimenting to see which one's work and which ones don't.
Let's look at prefixes first. We all know the word 'do'. Did you know
that you can redo something, and if you're not happy with it you can undo
it too. What does the prefix 're' mean here? That's right - 're' means again,
so if you redo something you do it again. And what about 'un' in undo?
'Un' is an opposite, so if you undo something you reverse what you have
done. Here's another prefix. What does it mean? disagree, dislike, disallow,
disappear 'Dis' also means not, or reversal. Now let's look at some suffixes.
Happy is an adjective. How can we make it into a noun? Simple, just add
the suffix 'ness'. 'happy' + 'ness' = happiness Here are two more adjectives
to express feelings: sad and tired. To make the noun, you just add the same
suffix. Have a look. 'sad' + 'ness' = sadness 'tired' + 'ness' = tiredness There
are a few more prefixes and suffixes that go with a range of words. Learning
which ones to use and with which words may seem hard at first. But with
time you'll learn to hear what sounds right. Prefixes and suffixes are
everywhere. Next time you're reading or listening to English start noticing
which beginnings and endings are being used. Make a note of them, and
more importantly, use them. It's the only way to remember them. We hope
you found this video helpful, and we look forward to your return. Thanks
for watching.
English Spelling Rule #23// Why and When to use
SION and TION suffixes?
hi there welcome to homeschooling with hera i hope you all are well
today's video is on the request of some of my subscribers and the topic is
suffixes shen ocean s-i-o-n-n-t-i-o-n what we would explore in this video is
why do we use shen or shan why do we use these two suffixes and when do
we use s-i-o-n-n-t because they both sound same so it may be challenging
for some people to remember that which is spelling to use when luckily we
have some rules that when should we use sio and shan and when should
we use t-i-o-n-sun so please keep watching the video till the end and you
will surely get something from it before i proceed any further if you are new
to my channel let me tell you that this channel is perfect for english spelling
rules foreign jolly grammar tricky word decoding your spellings and all the
foundation english and math curriculum to home school your kids just go
through the playlist of the channels once and you will find so many things
of your interest come on now let's begin today's video let's find out the
answer of our first question that why do we use shan or shan s-i-o-n or t-i-
o and in words as suffixes right so we use suffixes s-i-o-n or t-i-o-n shen to
make nouns from verbs okay to describe an action process practice or the
result thereof now what does it mean that if you want to make a noun from
a verb we may use these two suffixes like the verb is discuss and the noun
is discussion the verb is translate and the noun is translation the verb is
consult and the noun is consultation the verb is conclude and the noun is
conclusion so you can see that these nouns are describing either an action
or a process or a practice or a result as well and now it's time to find out
that when should we use s-i-o-n and when should we use t-i-o-n to make
verbs noun right now let's find out the answer of our second question that
when should we use shen with the spelling s-i-o-n so here you go if the
word ends in d d e s e l n r m i t met or double s we shall use s i o and shun
right like the word comprehend it is ending in d so we will make it
comprehension right for d e the example is invade it's ending in d e so it
will be invasion okay the words that end in s e like revise will be revision
now before i go any further let me tell you that you may have noticed that
here i'm saying comprehension and in invasion and revision i'm saying the
zhen sound shen and zhen so yes this spelling can have two different
pronunciation the one is chan with s-h-u-n and the other is jean so when
would you pronounce s-i-o-n as gen that is after a vowel or an r suffix
sufficient sounds gen look at here it's a vowel and then the suffix so it will
be invasion a vowel then sion so it will be revision got it and if it's not a
vowel so it will sound shun comprehension now these were verbs that were
converted to nouns and now we have these three letters if you hear these
three sounds that are in an er in a word before the shun sound so you need
to use s-i-o-n like here we are hearing compile and then shun compulsion
so if there is a l in a word before the shunt sound use sio and spelling right
in the word expansion expand and then you are adding sun so after an n
sound use shen with s i o n version because it's an r so you will use s i o n
to make it shen origin spelling as i have just told you that after r even as i
own sounds jean just want to add in something that we have few
exceptions with the letters n and r but they are really few at the end of the
video i will share with you the list of the words in which we have n and r
and we are using the t i o and channel spelling right but they are really few
most of the time we use s i o n now let's see this one if the base word is
ending at mid like admit transmit permit commit right if the base word is
ending at mid you will remove the t with an s and then put s i o n or you
can simply say that you will put double s i o n admit will be admission
permit will be permission transmit will be transmission right then we have
the double s if any word is ending in double s like here express so you will
make the noun from it by adding i o because we already have two s's we
cannot add another one so we will simply write i o n and it will be
expression got it so these are the rules to use s i o n as a noun suffix okay
now let's see when to use t i o and as shan and words okay if the word is
ending with eight then use tio and shun like in the words donate it will be
donation create will be creation translate will be translation so whenever
you hear any word ending in eight and if you want to make it a noun just
put the tio and spelling afterwards don't forget to remove the e at the end
okay the second thing that you should remember is if you have any
consonant except l n and r before shen sound then you can also use tion
but as i told you that there are few exceptions with n and r so you can just
take a screenshot and you can make list of these words and memorize
them i hope you have taken that screenshot so come on let's see if we have
any other consonant before sound like in description here we have p
description okay and the other word could be subtraction right let's have a
quick look on exceptions it's mention attention intention convention
prevention detention proportion assertion distortion exertion and extortion
you can see here we have n before shen and here we have our proportion
but we are using the t i o and spelling that we usually don't use after l n
and r we use s i o n right before ending the video let me tell you an other
shiny spelling that is rare not commonly used but you may see it in these
two words the first and suspicion and the other is coercion okay with that
today's video has come to an end i hope you have liked it i hope you have
