What This Module is About
People have always been fascinated with volcanoes and their intense
displays of nature’s power. During prehistoric period, humans believed that
volcanoes were homes to gods or goddesses. But today, science tells us that
volcanoes result from the immense heat energy---geothermal energy---found internal
of the Earth’s.
There are many forms of energy: like solar, wind, and wave but the much
safer than most of the other energy sources that can be tapped to generate
electricity and that is Geothermal [Link] what is Geothermal Energy?
1. Illustrate how energy from volcanoes may be tapped for human use;

The sun is Earth’s main source of energy. It has a vast amount of energy. The
sun is considered Earth’s main energy source since most of our energy sources
derive their energy from it. There are two types of energy resources on Earth –
renewable and nonrenewable. A renewable energy source or alternative energy is
one that can be replaced in a short period of time such as solar energy and
hydropower energy while a nonrenewable energy source takes millions of years to
replace or can never be replenished. These energy sources can be used in many
ways.
What’s New
2
In the activity you have identifiedsome natural source of heat beneath the
Earth’s surface. This source of heat warms up water which is trapped in rocks
formations and may come up beneath its surface naturally as volcanoes, fumaroles,
hot springs and geysers. But what is this Earth’s internal heat called?
What Is It
If you were to dig a big hole straight down into the ground, you would
notice that the temperature deep down below is getting hotter the deeper you go.
Why? That is because the interior of the Earth is full of [Link] heat is referred
toGeothermal Energy!
The term geothermal energy is easy to remember if you will break it down!
The Greek word geo refers to the Earth, and thermal means heat, so geothermal
energy is energy from Earth’s heat. This energy is then used to power generators
in the production of electricity.

Read each question carefully. Put (/) in column whether your answer is YES
or NO. if your answer is NO then write your reason why or how on the last column.
Activity 1. Modified True or False. Write True if the statement is true. If it is False,
change the underlined word or group of words to make it correct.
The lesson 2 will give you an overview on how a geothermal energy can
produce electricity.
What’s New
The geothermal power plant is not different with other existing power
plants here in our country. It has the same features lies on it.
OBJECTIVE: After this activity, you should be able to identify the main components
in a geothermal power plant.
PROCEDURE: Put aCHECK mark (/) in the picture if it is one of the components in a
geothermal power plant and write the names on the space provided which you will
choose inside the box.

OBJECTIVE: After this activity, you should be able to arrange the different steps to
generate an electricity out of the geothermal energy.
PROCEDURE: Read each of the statement below and arrange the following steps
on what comes first up to the last through writing the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
_____The electrical energy from the generator will travel to the transformer.
_____Pumping the hot water from geothermal energy.
_____Cold water is being pumped back again to the underground.
_____Steam supplies theturbine causes to rotate.
_____The generator produces electricity.
What Is It
A geothermal power plant generates electricity from geothermal energy
(Earth’s heat source). The main components of this power plants includes:
TURBINE- composed of wheels which is driven by a water or a gas, GENERATOR-
type of machine made up of coils of wire to produce electricity, and
TRANSFORMER- electrical device used to transfer electrical charges.
Here are the basic steps on how this geothermal power plant generates
electricity:
1. Pumping the hot water from geothermal resource.
2. How water will travel through pipelines and reaching a particular tank where it
turns into steam(water in a gas form).
3. The steam supplies the turbine which causes to rotate in a continuous process.
4. A turbine is connected to a generator which electricity is being produced.
5. From the generator, electrical energy will travel into a transformer which is
responsible to transport to the different power lines.
6. The excess steam pass through a cooling station where it condenses(gas to
liquid).
7. The cold water is being pumped back again to the geothermal source to start the
process again.
9
Study the picture below.
What’s More
From the activity 1, you had identified the components of a geothermal
power plant. While from activity 2, you had asked to arrange the different steps in
generating the electricity of this power plant.
With this next activity, you will trace how a geothermal power plant works
through which you had learned from the previous pages.
OBJECTIVE: After this activity, you should be able to trace the steps on how a
geothermal power plant works though a flow chart.
DATA GATHERING: Complete the given flow chart by writing the answers inside
each of the box. You may refer on the choices below.
Cold water geothermal resource crystallizer-reactor steam
Transformer turbine generator pipelines injection well cooling station
1.(the hot water is being pumped) 2. (where the hot water travels) 3.
(gaseous state of water)
Fill in the missing words below. Choose your answer inside the box.
Start water powerlines electricity hot
Turbine steam pipelines pumped generator
There are different steps involve in generating electricity from the geothermal
energy. First, the______water is being_______from the geothermal reservoir
through_______. This water will turn into_______as it reaches to the surface. From
this process, it will travel to a rotating device called_______which then connects to
another device called________. And at this point, there is now a production
of_______. The transformer will now supplies the different________.There are
portions of steam that becomes cold______because it passes through a cooling
station. And it will be pumped again to the geothermal reservoir to______ a new
process.
What I Can Do
Suppose you had found out that your father had inherited a large area of land
which can be a great source of geothermal energy. The local government had been
negotiated already your father about the operation on building a possible geothermal
power plant on his inherited land. But your father wants to know more about this
power plant. Your task is to make an illustration/drawing how does the geothermal
power plant works to be able that your father will understand the whole process. And
you will help him to [Link] can draw based from what you had learned from this
module. Use the space below for your illustration.
These are the criteria for your output.
