Dynamics of Machinery (23MECH07I)
Tutorial 2: Static force analysis
At the end of this session the student should have a complete understanding of the following concepts:
1. Newton's laws of motion and free body diagrams.
2. Static force analysis for the different mechanisms.
Tutorial Questions
1. Find the force exerted by the piston of the shown crank slider mechanism in the given position
(ϴ2=150°) graphically. The torque supplied by the crank is equal to 50 N.m. Find the reaction at
the supports.
2. The lever ABC is pin supported at A and connected to a short link BD as shown in the Fig. If the
weight of the members is negligible, determine the force of the pin on the lever at A graphically.

3. Find graphically the force that can be exerted by the follower (shown below) to open a valve,
knowing that the instantenous value of torque at the camshaft is 2 N.m, the camshaft centre at
(0,0) and the point of contact with the follower face is at (5,30). Calculate the turning moment of
the flat faced follower at the given position, considering the follower guide to be aligned with Y-
axis w.r.t the camshaft centreline.
4. Determine the unknown balancing torque T2 (including its direction) for the mechanism shown in
the figure both analytically and graphically. For each link, draw a free body diagram. Clearly write
down the equations for forces and moments. Where PC is equivalent to 1000 N.

5. Determine the required input torque 𝑇1 for achieving static equilibrium of the mechanism shown
in the figure below. Forces 𝐹2 and 𝐹3 have magnitudes of 50 ad 75 N respectively and force F2 acts
in the horizontal direction. Angles 𝛼, 𝜃2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜃3 are equivalent to 26.38, 14.4 and 87.7°.
