Two Great Floods
Introduction
Did you know there are “Two Great Floods” recorded in the Bible? The
events leading to, and the characteristics of the flood of Noah’s time are
widely known and recognized. However, a complete study of the Scripture
will reveal references to a different flood event involving not only water, but
darkness and shaking, which were not characteristics of Noah’s flood. As we
carefully seek God for the correct understanding of His Word, we'll see two
different and distinct flood events emerge. Before we pursue our study of
the two floods however, let’s examine the Scripture precipitating these
events, for their commonality will show they are indeed acts of God’s
judgment.
(Gen. 6:12) "And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was
corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth". (Gen. 6:13)
"God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the
earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy
them with the earth." (Gen. 6:8) "But Noah found Grace in the eyes of
the Lord."
Noah walked with God and was just and perfect in his generations. God then
instructed Noah to make rooms inside the ark, three stories high. Altogether
the ark was three hundred cubits long (450 feet), fifty cubits (75 feet) wide,
thirty cubits (45 feet) high, and the door in the side of the ark allowed access
to all three stories. Upon the completion of the ark Noah, his wife and his
sons (Shem, Ham, and Japheth), and the three wives of his sons entered into
the ark (Gen. 7:13). In addition, all the animals, creeping things, foul, and
birds went in unto Noah in the ark (Gen. 7:14‐16). Thus God had mercy on
eight people and a large number of animals.
In reviewing the flood, we find it first took 40 days of rain and all the
fountains of the great deep were broken up to supply the water for this great
flood (Gen.7:11,12)! Second, the waters prevailed 150 days (Gen. 7:24) thus
eliminating the chance for survivors outside the Ark. Third, this was not a
violent flood in the sense that the waters increased over a 40 day period of
time and they were quiet enough that the ark with it's large load was safe.
Fourth, It came to pass after 150 days that God made a wind to pass over the
earth so the waters began to retreat. Noah tested for the presence of the
waters by sending a raven and a dove out of the window. The raven stayed
out but the dove returned. Noah sent the dove out two more times and the
last time she did not return (Gen. 8:1‐14). And so the waters increased
gradually and retreated even slower. From this description we can see that
Noah's flood did not include shaking (major earthquakes), fire or darkness.
Soon after the flood God revealed His plan in:
(Gen. 9:11) “And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all
flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there
any more be a flood to destroy the earth.”
Consequently, since Noah's flood there have not been anymore universal
floods! Universal floods were either before Noah or during Noah's time.
Another Flood?
(John 1:1) “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.” (John 1:2) “The same was in the beginning
with God.” (John 1:3) “All things were made by him; and without him
was not any thing made that was made.
(Ps. 90:2) "Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou
hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to
everlasting, thou art God."
This goes back further in time because the verse speaks of a time before
anything we know of was created. “From everlasting” is farther back in time
than we can comprehend. We don't have many details about such an early
period of time, but we do know that our Triune God (Father, Son and Holy
Spirit) has existed forever, and that He created a large host of heavenly
angels.
Next in time:
(Hebrews 11:3) "Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed
by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things
which do appear."
(Ps. 33:6) "By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the
host of them by the breath of his mouth."
It is evident by the above Scriptures that God spoke the worlds into existence
solely by virtue of His own power, and utilizing nothing (no preexisting
material)! This very likely is the “Big Bang” event commonly estimated to be
some 13.7 billion years ago.
(Gen. 1:1) "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."
Next we find the Scripture getting more specific about our earth:
(Isaiah 45:18) "For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God
himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he
created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and
there is none else."
The above Scripture reveals a time between when God the Son (who is our
Creator) spoke to begin the universe (the heavens) and when our Earth was
created. God certainly planned ahead a very long time in order to create our
Earth to be inhabitable. His great love for us is shown by His past plans and
His future plans as illustrated through the many prophecies in the Bible.
Preparation of the Earth
Closely following is (Ps. 104:5) where Jesus “… laid the foundations of the
earth…”. Job 38:4‐6 gives more details about some of the steps our LORD
took in preparing the Earth for habitation.
(Job 38:4‐6) "4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the
earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. 5 Who hath laid the
measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon
it? 6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened?" (Job 38:7)
"When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted
for joy?"
Verses 4 and 5 make it clear that human beings were to be the inhabitants of
the Earth and that Jesus was to be their light. The Light of “God the Son” was
far too difficult for evil (darkness) to receive or comprehend. Hearts must
desire God's light in order for God's light to be understood or received! We
see the first mention of men in John 1:4 while very early Scriptures lead up to
this verse (John 1:1‐3). These men were earlier than Adam and Eve and
perhaps much earlier. We must note that John 1:1‐5 looks beyond John's day
to the distant past.
These Scriptures mention both angels and the presence of human beings.
Angels are sometimes referred to as gods (Ps. 82) and sons of God. Broken
down cities (Jer. 4:26) give us a direct clue about the presence of men. The
first mention of man is (previous paragraph) and the second mention of man I
believe to be:
(Isa. 42:5) "5 Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens,
and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which
cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and
spirit to them that walk therein:"
The third mention of man is found in verses three and four of Psalm 82.
In verse 1 the angels are first described (gods) and then admonished and
rebuked in:
(Ps. 82:2‐4) "2 How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons
of the wicked? Selah. 3 Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to
the afflicted and needy. 4 Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of
the hand of the wicked."
They had been sinning against God by mistreating man. Satan had thus
sinned already and recruited angels and in turn humans to be wicked and do
evil!
(Ps. 82:5) "5 They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on
in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course."
This is a major judgmental event in the Bible in which the foundations of the
earth are out of course.
(Ps. 82:6,7) "6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the
most High. 7 But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes."
The angels are told they shall die like men. Presently, they are largely free, as
is Satan and the evil demons, however some are in chains (locked up, Jude
1:6).
We now need to turn our attention to one of the most amazing Scriptures for
this time period. It is:
(Jer. 4:23‐27) "23 I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and
void; and the heavens, and they had no light. 24 I beheld the
mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly. 25 I
beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens
were fled. 26 I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and
all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD,
and by his fierce anger. 27 For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land
shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end."
Verse 23 is the same description found in Gen. 1:2a “…the earth was without
form and void”. Therefore, the restoration of the earth follows this point in
time (Gen. 1:3‐31). As we look at (Jer. 4:24‐26) verses 24 and 25 picture a
judgment nearly complete while verse 26 shows the judgment well under
way since the fruitful place was no longer fruitful but a wilderness and the
cities were broken down by the presence of the Lord. This is all prior to Adam
and Eve and Noah's flood! It stands to reason that verses 24, 25 and 26 go
back in time from verse 23. In (Jer. 4:27) God concludes the matter when He
says: "…the whole land shall be desolate; yet I will not make a full end."
Adam and Eve, and you and I are living proof of this statement. God did
restore the Earth during the six Genesis days (Ps. 104:30).
It is also important to examine another Scripture to see how more than one
writer is used by God to emphasize an important fact or teaching.
This verse follows verses 30 and 31 where God was rejoicing in His works
(verse 31) and in verse 30 where He renewed the face of the earth. Again,
reading thru verses 30‐32
(Ps.104:30‐32) "30 Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and
thou renewest the face of the earth. 31 The glory of the LORD shall
endure for ever: the LORD shall rejoice in his works. 32 He looketh on
the earth, and it trembleth: he toucheth the hills, and they smoke."
These verses are looking back in time. In verse 30 why did God have to renew
the face of the earth? Because He had judged it for sin in the time of a Pre‐
Adamic Civilization!
God's Plan for the Pre‐Adamics
We can gain further insight into the identity of a pre‐Adamic civilization in:
(Heb. 12:22‐24) "22 But ye are come unto mount Sion and unto the city
of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem and to an innumerable
company of angels, 23 To the general assembly and church of the
firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and
to the spirits of just men made perfect, 24 And to Jesus the mediator of
the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better
things than that of Abel."
What about the ungodly Pre‐Adamics (remember that SIN caused the
judgment) [1]. Most likely they are disembodied demonic spirits which Jesus
encountered. Why else would God cover the Pre‐Adamics in so many
Scriptures unless we needed to have understanding with regard to demonic
action? They can speak, torment, occupy and control humans whom they
have entered. They know they have a day of judgment coming and they
knew who Jesus was. They were also referred to as devils (plural), whereas
Satan is referred to as the Devil (singular is used). The scriptural use of the
word “devils” by greatest frequency (58 occurrences in the New Testament),
is the Greek word: daimonion, which is translated: a demonic being.
Forthwith, a more accurate word for our reference to devils would be
“demons”.
(Luke 4:41) "And devils (demons) also came out of many, crying out,
and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them
suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ."
We can now see a reasonable explanation for both the righteous Pre‐Adamics
(Heb12:23) and the unrighteous Pre‐Adamics (demons). Satan is the author
of rebellion against God and so He and his unrighteous angels caused the Pre‐
Adamics to sin badly enough for a drastic judgment that left the earth in
darkness, covered with water, and uninhabitable. But God in His great love
has clearly reserved for Himself a believing remnant from the time prior to
Adam and Eve.
This period of time involves the other steps of judgment involving water and
darkness and finally the absence of light. These Scriptures will bring us right
up to Gen. 1:2 (not back to). There is a time gap between Jer. 4:23 and
Jer.4:24 in which most of this section fits.
(Jer. 4:23,24) "23 I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and
void; and the heavens, and they had no light. 24 I beheld the
mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly."
Beginning with (Isa. 24:17‐21) "17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon
thee, O inhabitant of the earth." God had begun to dispense judgment for
human rebellion. Verse 18 describes them fleeing:
"18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the
fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the
pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open,
and the foundations of the earth do shake."
"The windows on high" (first flood mentioned) in this verse clearly belong in
the time period between Gen. 1:1 and Gen. 1:2. Verses 19 and 20 of Isaiah
describe how complete the destruction was at the end of a Pre‐Adamic
civilization.
"19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the
earth is moved exceedingly. 20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a
drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression
thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again." 21
"And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the
host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon
the earth."
Verse 21 above identifies the sinners as the host of the high ones (angels)
and kings of the earth who represented the Pre‐Adamic civilization on the
earth; whose judgment is assured!
(Isa. 24: 1‐3) "1 Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh
it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the
inhabitants thereof. 2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the
priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with
her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so
with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury
to him. 3 The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the
LORD hath spoken this word."
In reviewing this passage above, we see how absolute the Lord's judgment
was. Nothing is more complete than making the earth empty and waste.
Void in Gen. 1:2 is the Hebrew “bohuw” which means emptiness, void, and
waste which parallels the conditions found in this passage. This passage had
no opportunity to be fulfilled since Adam and Eve. Noah's flood did not make
the earth empty as the linage before Noah's flood was continued.
The First Flood: Devastation with Water, Great Shaking,
and Darkness
(2Pet. 3:5,6) "5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word
of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water
and in the water: 6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed
with water, perished:"
The following passages in Job, Psalms, and Genesis completes the description
of water, thick darkness (as in a swaddlingband), and more great shaking of
the earth. None of these refer to Noah's flood.
1. (Job 9:5‐7) "5 Which removeth the mountains, and they know not:
which overturneth them in his anger. 6 Which shaketh the earth out of
her place, and the pillars thereof tremble. 7 Which commandeth the
sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars."
Note: Shaking the earth out of her place might refer to tilting the earth's axis.
The sun not rising and the stars not visible completes a setting of darkness.
2. (Job 38:8‐11) "8 Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake
forth, as if it had issued out of the womb? 9 When I made the cloud
the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it, 10 And
brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors, 11 And said,
Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud
waves be stayed?”
3. (Ps. 104:6) "Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a garment: the
waters stood above the mountains."
These verses describe a total flood which we also see in Gen. 1:2 below:
(Gen. 1:2) "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness
was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the
face of the waters."
The Spirit of God moving in this fashion shows a desire on God's part to
return men, who are free moral agents, to the earth which He had carefully
prepared earlier for habitation. Because of His great desire to fill the
Kingdom of heaven with mankind God began another race via Adam and Eve
upon this earth to accomplish His eternal purpose.
The Tempter: Satan, Promoter of Sin
Satan, in the form of a serpent, had other plans (Gen. 3:1) to thwart God's
effort to establish fellowship with the earth's new inhabitants by suggesting
to Eve that God did not really mean what He said and that Adam and Eve
could become very wise if they ate of the forbidden tree's fruit. Thus
obedience to God was challenged thru the pride of Adam and Eve since they
desired to be wise. It is important to note that Satan (Lucifer) came into the
garden as a fallen and sinful creature. His sin is a direct result of causing the
Pre‐Adamics to sin as well as dragging 1/3 of God's angels with him (Rev
12:4). It follows that the free moral agents of the first Flood are called Pre‐
Adamics for we can see that they were before Adam and Eve.
We can readily see the setting in verse 13 that the “Eden the garden of God”
does not refer to Adam's garden of Eden where Satan appeared as a serpent
after his fall (Gen.3:1‐7). His heart was lifted up because of his pride (verse
17) and pride is the biggest stumbling block for all mankind. Interestingly, his
place of humiliation will be upon the earth (verses 17 & 18), further linking his
past sinning to the Earth's residents.
Another Reference Linking Satan to the Pre‐Adamics
(Isa. 14:12‐17) "12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of
the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken
the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into
heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon
the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend
above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15 Yet thou
shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. 16 They that see
thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this
the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; 17
That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof;
that opened not the house of his prisoners?"
Verses 13 and 14 show his extreme pride and disrespect toward God. It is a
gross mistake for one who is created to assume that he can make himself
equal to the Creator (see verse 14)! Satan has much freedom now but is
limited as to what he can do because Christ's sacrifice on the cross has given
us power over Satan in the name of Jesus through power and faith in the
shed blood of Christ.
The Meaning of the Days of Genesis
Since there were human beings on the earth before Adam and Eve the six
days described in Gen. 1:3‐31 are days of restoration when God restored the
earth and made it fit for Adam and Eve to inhabit. These days are 24 hour
days but have nothing to do with God's original creation of the earth. Six
days are described in the rest of Genesis chapter one five of which are
described as good or very good in God's sight! The only one not described as
good is (Gen. 1: 6‐8) which states:
"6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters,
and let it divide the waters from the waters. 7 And God made the
firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament
from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. 8 And
God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning
were the second day."
(Psalm 104:5‐9) "5 Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should
not be removed for ever. 6 Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a
garment: the waters stood above the mountains. 7 At thy rebuke they
fled; at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away. 8 They go up by the
mountains; they go down by the valleys unto the place which thou hast
founded for them. 9 Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass
over; that they turn not again to cover the earth."
It may be helpful to consider that the outer space would most likely be
described as lights in the firmament of the heaven, as in:
(Gen. 1:14) "And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the
heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and
for seasons, and for days, and years:"
Implications
What do these two floods imply? We see two judgments described neither of
which resemble each other except for the use of water. Noah's flood only
saw the use of water without shaking, darkness, and earthquakes! The sin
before the first flood brought such great anger from God that water plus
darkness, shaking, and earthquakes were used in God's judgment! The
common denominator between these two floods was sin! Sin is committed
by free moral agents who were permitted to make their own decisions. Who
were these free moral agents? They definitly lived before Adam and Eve for
we see in Gen. 1:1 God's creating work and in Gen. 1:2 we see the world
judged by God.
(Exodus 20:11) "For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the
sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the
LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it."
The Hebrew word for “made” is “asah,” which means to do, fashion,
accomplish, make. This is not the same as the act of creating (“bara” which
means to create out of nothing). For example, below in:
(Isaiah 42:5) "Thus saith God the LORD, he that created (bara) the
heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and
that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon
it, and spirit to them that walk therein:"
Common Deceptions
Deception 1: Disbelief
The most common deception is where people do not believe the Bible at all.
The Gospel is foolishness to them and their minds are blinded into believing
Satan's lies completely.
Deception 2: Misbelief
The next serious deception is a belief that our earth is only some 6,000 to
10,000 years old. This is commonly taught in a number of denominations and
is called the Young Earth belief. Some of these churches insist that to become
a member of their church scientists, geologists, and other believers in an old
earth must renounce their old earth belief. This is quite a roadblock to new
believers who know that the earth is billions of years old. The underlying
force behind this belief is that they can't allow enough time for the evolution
of man to be possible. Several billion years is not nearly enough time to
evolve an animal much less a human being which needs a soul, spirit, and
body. Seeking the truth in God's Word is far better than stretching the Word
to mean what ones agenda requires.
The objection to the idea of sin before Adam and Eve is erroneously based on
the scripture:
(Rom. 5:12) "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and
death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have
sinned:"
We must not ignore the fact that God renewed the face of the Earth. Placed
Adam and Eve in the Garden on the sixth day in a sinless fellowship with Him
in a renewed world. Therefore, sin was not in the renewed world at that
time. It was manifest when Satan entered into the Garden as a fallen creature
with the intent to discredit God and His new children, Adam and Eve. He was,
of course, successful with his deception; thus, helping Adam and Eve to sin.
The descriptions in the earlier text above have already described the fall of
Satan and his angels. Young earth writers tend to avoid the importance of
Satan's fall, what caused his fall, and his presence in Adam's garden. Only
God knows all the answers to this time period, though the earth reveals
evidence of long ages of death prior to Adam and Eve. While the evolutionist
is also without answers, (for the truth is hidden from the pride of man), the
Bible gives us enough understanding to see the tie with Satan, his angels,
their judgement, and a Pre‐Adamic people.
Conclusion
Satan is still the god of this world which requires of us due diligence as to his
lies, deception, and misinterpretation of God's Word. He is behind every
false religion and ungodly thought we have. We need to stay close to the
glorious gospel of Christ and maintain regular fellowship within a church of
humble, loving Christians. The following verses sum up the spiritual battle we
are in:
(2Cor. 4:3,4) "3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which
believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the
image of God, should shine unto them.”
(Eph.6:12) "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against
principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this
world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."
Are you missing a relationship with God? What will bring peace with God and
everlasting life? (Rom. 10:9, 10) explains how:
"9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt
believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou
shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto
righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."
(Rom.10:13) "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall
be saved."
Bow your head right now if you want God's forgiveness for your sins and say
your own simple prayer. Afterward, confess to someone that Christ is your
personal Saviour.
