Art Exhibition
By Mark Gifford
Do you enjoy going to art exhibitions? I didn’t, until I went to one recently
with my older sister. She’s studying art at college so she really wanted to
go, but I think she was secretly hoping I’d go too, so that she could show
off her knowledge of art – because it’s obvious I don’t know much about
it. Anyway, although I wasn’t really looking forward to it very much, I was
curious to see what was there.
When we got inside the exhibition, we found there were rooms full of
sculptures. They were the work of several well-known sculptors, all on
the theme of people. The first few rooms were full of strange figures
made of metal, and in different positions around the rooms – some
standing, others lying, some even upside down on the ceiling. But the
figures had no expressions on their faces at all, which made them look
very mysterious.
Then we moved into another room where there were groups of
rectangular-shaped pieces of stone, with holes for eyes and mouths. But
to me, the different sizes suggested small, welcoming family groups and I
2
felt very relaxed as I moved around them. The fact that they didn’t have
faces no longer seemed to matter somehow.
After that, we went out onto the roof, where there were a few more
figures, this time staring out across the city. And as we looked, we saw
more figures on nearby rooftops. I remembered then that when the
exhibition first opened, it was very controversial, because everyone
wondered who the figures were! No-one seemed to be worrying about
them anymore, though.
My sister did loads of fantastic sketches while she was at the exhibition,
and she says she’s now got plenty of material for her next art project at
college. She explained that it would be about how people responded to
different faces. It sounded fascinating! As for me, the moment I got home,
I felt inspired to do something creative, and more able to tackle it, too –
so watch this space!
