Title: An Annotated Bibliography
Ahn, Hyoyeon, and Jongeun Won. “The Effects of Adolescents’ Participation in Video Games
on Cognitive Function and Motor Control Skills.” Healthcare (Basel), vol. 11, no. 20,
2023, pp. 2740-
The authors start the article by mentioning how most people believe that video games can
lead to an unhealthy addiction to gaming. However, they decide to conduct a study and
gather their own information on how video games affect cognitive skills of individuals.
The information in this article is from a study that was conducted. This study consisted of
130 individuals who took 10 different tests (each having a different skill from video
games) and they were evaluated afterwards based on their results. In this study, It was
shown that the longer an individual's playtime was, the more enhanced their cognitive
skills were. Not to mention, the younger (high school age) individuals had higher
cognitive skills than the other age groups did. In this article, the authors state that video
games help strengthen cognitive skills and help improve the psychological health of the
individuals.
Bediou, Benoit, et al. “Meta-Analysis of Action Video Game Impact on Perceptual, Attentional,
and Cognitive Skills.” Psychological Bulletin, vol. 144, no. 1, 2018, pp. 77–110
This article goes into information about multiple studies that were conducted on the
effect that video games can have on the cognitive skills of individuals. In this article, the
Rodriguez 2
authors go into detail about the many different effects that games have on cognitive skills
and what each type of game does. For example, the authors state how action video games
enhance the attention of looking up and down as well as being aware of your
surroundings. Information that the authors gathered from articles shows that not all
games impact cognitive skills equally. All video games have different effects on an
individual's cognitive skills. They encourage that more studies should be conducted in
order to better help understand the information about the effects of video games and
cognitive skills.
Choi, Eunhye, et al. “Commercial Video Games and Cognitive Functions: Video Game
Genres and Modulating Factors of Cognitive Enhancement.” Behavioral and Brain
Functions, vol. 16, no. 1, 2020, pp. 2–2
In this article, the authors mention all the negative effects that video games can have on
individuals. However, they then go on to mention all the positive effects video games can
have on cognitive skills of individuals. With all the information in the article, It is shown
that video games have a positive effect on the enhancement of cognitive skills. The
results of the study showed that certain cognitive skills were heightened depending on the
skills needed in each video game. One factor that had to be taken into consideration was
the age and gender of the individuals. This article starts off by listing the negative in
order to make way for the positive.
Johnson, Julie, et al. “Wii Social Skills Group and Inter-School Tournament.”
Partnership, vol. 6, no. 2, 2011, pp. 1-
In this article, a study was conducted in which two schools used a Nintendo Wii in order
to help improve the social skills of the young boys that attended there. On top of this, the
Rodriguez 3
schools also used twitter and skype in order to help the boys communicate with each
other due to the distance issue (each school was in a different city). This project helped
collect information on whether or not video games can help an individual improve their
social skills. The results of the article showed that including things that interest the target
audience, such as video games interest young boys, helps improve the interest and
engagement that the boys had for the project. In addition, the long distance helped
improve the interest the boys had in the project.
Kovess-Masfety, Viviane, et al. “Is Time Spent Playing Video Games Associated with
Mental Health, Cognitive and Social Skills in Young Children?” Social Psychiatry and
Psychiatric Epidemiology, vol. 51, no. 3, 2016, pp. 349–57
In this article, the authors conducted a study in which they gave a questionnaire to
multiple children who played video games. Parents and teachers believed that video
games had a negative impact psychologically on children since they are young and
impressionable. This questionnaire helped conclude whether the video games helped
benefit the social and cognitive skills of children or worsened them. The results of the
study showed that video games have a positive impact on children and help stimulate
their social and cognitive skills. This is due to the children having to understand the
mechanics in the video game and learning to use them and work around them.
Martín-del-Pozo, Marta, et al. “Video Games and Collaborative Learning in Education? A Scale
for Measuring In-Service Teachers’ Attitudes towards Collaborative Learning with Video
Games.” Informatics (Basel), vol. 6, no. 3, 2019, pp. 30-
In this article, the various authors state that although some students feel inclined to learn,
video games may help increase their interest in school subjects even more. The article
Rodriguez 4
goes into detail about the implementation of video games in a way to help bring interest
to students by using something they should be familiar with. The video games would
include activities to help strengthen their social skills by having students collaborate and
work together to achieve a common goal. However, the authors also state that in order for
students to really find interest in these games, Teachers also have to find interest.
Teachers need to feel motivated towards the implication of video games in their teaching
that way students will feel motivated to learn too. The authors state that teachers need to
have good attitudes toward more modern methods of teaching that include technology
and video games.
Marín-Suelves, Diana, et al. “Videogames and Education: Analysing of Research Trends.”
Revista colombiana de educación (Bogotá, Colombia : 1978), no. 84, 2022
This article talks about the research trends for the use of video games and education. In
order to get their data, the authors found over 260 articles mentioning the use of video
games in the education of students. Among these, the effects of video games were very
positive on education. Video games have shown to have a positive effect on motivation
and learning of the students, without completely replacing the role of the instructor. The
article goes on to state that specific video games need to be used in order to teach
subjects. The video games have to have educational value and must correlate to the class
in order to help students learn. In addition, video games help increase interest and
engagement in the learning process.
Micaela Henriques, Brigite. “Do Video Games Promote the Development of Social
Skills?” INFAD (Barcelona), vol. 3, no. 1, 2017, pp. 203–12
In this article, Henriques explains how games have always been relevant no matter what
Rodriguez 5
culture. However, games have evolved into electronic video games with the rise of
technology. In history games have always been connected to social skills, in the sense of
teamwork and communication. However with the rise of technology, can the same be
said about video games? Henriques states that video games help groups of individuals
develop social skills by having to communicate and have social contact and interactions.
In doing so, players in video games have to cooperate and communicate. Henriques
believes that video games do help strengthen an individual's social skills.
Rodríguez-Ponga, Diego. “The Application of Video Games in Education.”
Multidisciplinary Journal of School Education, vol. 10, no. 1(19), 2021
In this article, Ponga goes into detail about how History is one of the least liked subjects
in High School. He states how teachers blame phones and video games for the disinterest
of the subject. However, Ponga believes that in order for students to be more engaged in
learning history, Video games should be added to the mix. He believes that video games
have so much hidden potential and it should not go to waste or be ignored. Ponga
mentions the “ Early Modern period simulator Europa Universalis IV” as a way to help
bring back student’s interest in history classes. He believes that by translating history into
audio visual language (video games), teenagers would find history a lot more interesting.
Unsworth, Nash, et al. “Is Playing Video Games Related to Cognitive Abilities?” Psychological
Science, vol. 26, no. 6, 2015, pp. 759-
A study was done to show whether video game players had higher cognitive skills than
non video game players. In the first experiment, video game players and non video game
players were put against each other in order to see which group has higher cognitive
skills. The results showed that video game players had higher cognitive skills than the
Rodriguez 6
non players. However when the experiment was done for a second time, the results
showed that the relation between cognitive skills and video game skills weren't that
similar and did not go hand in hand. This led to the authors to claim that video games do
not benefit cognitive skills as much as people claim they do.
