up most of the space of lesson plan, often a full page]
⚫ 5 Minutes. Activity 1: Set (introduction)
- Before the lesson, teacher will put different coins into different corners in the
classroom to let students find it. Their mission is to find different coins.
- After finding the coins, ask students if they know how many kinds of coins do U.S.
have. (4)
- Ask students how they can keep their money safe so that they don’t lose it. If they can
keep it safe, we will have a purchasing experience after they learned the coins values
and counting.
- In the end of the lesson, teacher will ask them to give back the money to see if they
can keep it safe.
⚫ 5-10 Minutes. Activity 2:
- Ask students what function the money is. (purchase, investment)
- Ask students where the money from. They may answer it is from the phone, bank, or
parents’ wallet. (U.S. currency is produced by the U.S. Department of the Treasury)
- Students may question their parents don’t use money to purchase. Teacher may have
to explain the principle behind the online banking and credit card/ apple wallet is
money.
⚫ 10-15 Minutes. Activity 3: (the exact number of activities in the procedures will vary)
- Students will be 2 in a group and have a set of coins. They will explore the
differences between 4 coins.
- After the discussion, teacher will ask each group what they think. (They may answer
the size difference, the color difference, the words on the coins are different)
- After that, students have to give teacher back the coins set.
- Teacher will show them a slide that presents the coins in a bigger picture so that
students can see it clearly. President Abraham Lincoln is on the penny. President
Thomas Jefferson is on the nickel. President Franklin D. Roosevelt is on the dime.
George Washington is on the quarter. Every coin has “E Pluribus Unum”. It reflects
the states’ willingness to unite under a common currency because the states printed
their own money in the past years.
