Flat for rent.
Man calls and asks: Is it Bates?
Woman answers: Yes?
Man starts the conversation: Oh! Good morning, I am talking about the apartment that is
advertised for rent, we saw the ad in the newspaper on Tuesday night,
and we wonder if the apartment is still available.
The Woman answers the following: Yes it is.
The Man comments: Good! I just wanted to check a few details with you if you're okay. The rent is
600 dollars per month, is that correct?
The woman answers the following: Yes, 600 dollars per month, with a month's deposit, you will
also have electricity and gas charges on top of that.
The Man asks again: Yes, Sure. Another thing, are pets allowed in the building? We have 2 rather
old cats from which we don't want to be separated.
And the Woman answers: Well, fortunately for you, cats are not a problem, but we do not allow
dogs due to noise. The
Man replies: That's a relief. In the ad it says that it has 3 bedrooms, are they large or small? I mean,
would you call them doubles or singles?
It is the Woman's turn and she says: Well, 2 are very big, but the third one is really like for one
person, there is room for a simple bed and a mat, but not much else.
The Man asks other questions: I see, and what about the heating? You said that the apartment is
centrally heated, is that gas central heating?
heating in all rooms?
The Woman answers: Yes, it is gas, and all the rooms have radiators, including the 2 bathrooms,
there is also a fireplace in the living room so you can have a real fire
if you want it on a winter night, it is very cozy.
The Man asks the following about parking: Another question, we have 2 cars. Is there parking
available for residents of the building, or do we have to
search for parking on the street every day?
The Woman answers the following: Oh yes. Parking can be a problem, right? And so expensive
these days, if you have to leave your cars for hours on the street. Have
a parking lot in the back of the building, but there is only space for one car per apartment. I'm
afraid your second car will have to sit on the road. The Man
comments: That's a shame, but it doesn't matter, a space is better than none. Thank you very
much for your help, we would like to come and see the apartment today. Would
4 30 minutes be okay for you?
The Woman tells him the following: Yes, it's fine. I will go out this afternoon. Could you give me
your name please?
The Man tells him then: Paul Stewart, and that together with my wife to take a look if there is no
problem.
LA Woman ends the conversation by saying: Okay Mr. Stewart, I'll see you at 4:30, I'll give you the
key so you can take a look.
The tower of London.
The Tower of London is one of Britain's most famous historical sites, and one that every tourist
wants to see. Through the centuries, it was a royal castle and a terrible prison
where many famous people from British history were imprisoned and executed. Diane Wood has
been there for a guided tour.
A palace and fortress for over 900 years, much is known about the bloody history of the Tower of
London. It is recognized worldwide as a royal prison and home
of some of the most famous diamonds on earth.
The real history of the tower begins in 1066, with William the conqueror. He originally had a
wooden fort built, but later transformed it into a large palace.
stone fortified, with walls 15 feet wide.
Visitors to the Tower of London today can hear stories about the place, from its 38 yeoman guards,
as Brian Pendleton explains why he took the job:
"Well, I like to meet people and the Tower of London is a place where you definitely you can meet
lots and lots of people, and I like the useful uniform too."
-The famous uniform is very distinctive and has its own history-
"The uniform we wear now is blue with red facing, dating from 1858, the reign of Queen Victoria,
the red and gold uniform we wear on state occasions, dating
from 1552." In 1552 the Yeoman tower guards became members of the queen's bodyguards and
were then allowed to wear the queen's guards for the king, which
was then the uniform of the king's guards.
Yeoman guards are frequently mistakenly called "flesh-eaters". The reason for this nickname is not
clear; although the most likely explanation is that the Yeoman
guards were provided with a daily ration of meat for their duties. So, what is a typical day like for
one of the guardians of the Tower of London? An
ordinary day would start at 15 minutes to 9, when we open our booths and open the buildings,
and then the public starts pouring in at 9. And there's not much to do.
speak to the public, make sure they stay out of trouble, and try to make them have a happy day at
the tower of London. When you start here, there are 3 important things
to learn; the first is: the output; the second is: Where can you get a cup of tea?; and the third:
Where are the bathrooms?, nothing to do with the story I'm afraid. But,
the tower is associated with many mysteries and traditions, so what is it like to live here at night?
I live here in the tower, and at night the tower has a completely different atmosphere. When the
public is not there and it starts to get dark, it is a much more mysterious place,
another atmosphere at night. It doesn't worry me at all, I say; I haven't seen anything strange here
at all. Well I've been here 13 years and I haven't seen a ghost yet. I think
you have to worry more about the living than the dead.

Mike: OK, Craig and Gavin, I realize there have been some issues with you recently, and I'd like to
try to resolve them right now. Gavin Can you tell me
why you think this problem has arisen now?
Gavin: Are you asking me? I really have no idea. I mean, I came to this job a year ago to do a special
project... I had a positive attitude, I was excited and
Craig has been blocking me...
Craig: Well jeso isn't fair at all, that's not true!
Mike: Ok, ok, wait a second. Can you speak one at a time please? Gavin, go on...
Gavin: Well, that's all really. I have never felt welcome here. I mean, when I walk into the office, the
others don't even greet me...
Craig: That's not true!!! You're the one not saying hello!
Mike: Craig please! Gavin, can you tell me why you think this situation arose?
Gavin: Well, like I said, I really have no idea. Maybe it's my style, I'm very positive, energetic and
outgoing, while everyone here seems to be half asleep.
Mike: Ahem, listen, I don't think judgmental comments like that help. Could we stick to the facts
instead of giving opinions? Gavin:
Ok, well, I could immediately see that some changes were needed here, so I set about making
those changes.
Mike: And that was part of your job description?
Gavin: Job description! Job description, that's all you hear around here... That's the problem with
this place... No initiative, no energy..
Mike: hmm.... Ok Craig, would you like to tell us what you feel is the problem?
Craig: Well, I think it's pretty clear, right? Him! That's it!
Mike: ok, like I said, can we keep the personal comments away, and just talk about work?...
Craig: Well, I'm talking about work! He doesn't respect the limits of what he has to do...he came
here for a year-long project, but he's tried to change the way he
the others work too.
Mike: Gavin? Can you answer that?
Gavin: Well, my project involves everyone else. It was impossible to do what he had to do without
making others rethink their way of working.
Mike: Ok, I think the personality issues are crucial here.
Gavin/Craig: (mumbles of agreement).
Mike: Well, that doesn't mean the problem can't be solved. We have to be flexible, accept changes,
and be totally tolerant of differences.
Craig: Easy to say!
Mike: Well yeah, easy to say. But difficult to do, I do not deny it. However, what we have to do is
review the project and look at the roles and responsibilities of others in
the project, and in the organization as a whole. If everyone sticks to and respects each other's roles
and responsibilities, then at least we can establish a good and
constructive working atmosphere.
