Learning Objective 2. Prepare Client
Pre-service activities are performed before a haircutting procedure to ensure
the client and hairdresser’s safety and welfare. Here are the Pre-service activities for
haircutting:
6. Extend appropriate courtesy to the client at all times.
7. Assess shape of the client’s face, head, length and width of hair according to
his/her built and height.
8. Analyze texture of hair according to style requirements and cutting technique
to be used.
9. Present hair catalog to the client for selection and agreement between client
and hairdresser.
10. Provide and use protective clothing according to health and sanitation
regulations.
11. Shampoo and/or condition hair following salon procedure.
Gowning the Client
Gowning the client correctly is important. This is to prevent hairs from falling
down the client’s neck. It is necessary especially to male clients. Use a tissue to insert
between the client’s collar and neckline. After that, put a small towel around the
tissue and top the cape on the shoulder of the client.
Preparing the Hair
Remove any hairdressing products on the client’s hair by loosening with a
comb before shampooing. This will help to clearly see its natural fall. If the client
does not want to be washed, then spray it with warm water using a spray bottle.
Confirming the Style
Once all the influential factors have been considered (refer to Module 1),
confirm to the client the length of the style. Use a style book to confirm the ideas that
the client wants.
Timing
Check the length of time on carrying out services. In cutting short hair, the
process should take no longer than 45 minutes or for about 1 hour.

Shampooing
Client’s hair is shampooed to remove dirt and excessive hairdressing products
into the hair of the client. This will help the hairdresser to easily comb out the client’s
hair.
Sectioning of the Hair
Sectioning is parting the hair into several sections for the purpose of cutting
the hair. Parting can be done horizontally or vertically depending on the desired
effect. You can section the hair into 6 parts if the client’s hair is long and 4 parts if
it’s short.
Different Types of Hair and Suggested Haircut
There are different types of hair as to texture and number. Each type affects
the volume of the hair as a whole.
• Fine Hair – very thin and has the biggest problem to gain volume and hold a
style.
- Suggested haircuts: short, blunt cut
• Medium Hair – is not too thick, not too thin and has lots of body and easy to
manage.
- Suggested haircut: any style
• Coarse Hair – is rough, wiry, heavy, wild, and strong. It is often dry and needs
conditioning.
- Suggested haircut: layered cut
• Thick Hair (number of hairs on the head) – about 150,000 strands
- Suggested haircut: layered cut
• Thin Hair (number of hairs on the head – about 90,000 strands
- Suggested haircut: short haircut
