Editor-in-Chief
he Legazpi Train Station, the 86-year-old train station located in Peñaranda St, Legazpi
Port District, Legazpi City, built with its classic stone masonry and with its sky blue
paint highlights first opened on the 8th of May 1938 as a part of the San Fernando -
Legazpi railroad system. After 79 years of operation, it was closed due to the lack of locomotive
equipment and, by the tail end of 2023, it was restored and reopened to have the new
locomotive engines and train coaches.

Trains, as we know them today, are a vital part

of a society ever since its invention in 1829 by
George Stephenson, it played a significant role
in providing efficient travel for passengers and
goods. It also contributed in connecting places
together by not only making land travel easier
and faster than before, it also helped boost
economic growth, spreading of ideas, and in
exchanging cultures with one another. On top
of that, trains of today have emerged to be safe
whilst being faster, reducing its climate impact,
and further cemented their importance in our
society today.

Legazpi City is the second largest city in Albay and the fifth largest in combined cities and
municipalities in Albay by land area, and it is also the most populous city in the province. The
city also has the highest revenue out of all the cities and municipalities in the province with
₱1,744,875,501.96 in revenue in 2023. Furthermore, according to the Department of Trade and
industries (DTI), Legazpi is 2nd in component city rankings in 2023 just behind Naga City
(CamSur). In addition to this, it is also one of the most visited cities in the region with 267,105
tourists in 2022. Having such a large local population, a sizable land area, and a very lively
tourism industry, the city needs to have a long-distance public transportation to cover the locals
traveling in and out of the city and the tourists besides by plane, bus, or private transportation.
The stretch of railway that Legazpi City is
a part of is known as Bicol Express that is
part of the greater PNR South Luzon
Long Haul route, it is a stretch of railway
that spans all the way from Calamba,
Laguna to Legazpi City, Albay, it consists
of 25 stations albeit only 16 stations are
only working being Sipocot to Legazpi
stations, but the Los Baños to Ragay route
still suspended due to its outdated
equipment and dangerous railway
conditions, PNR still have plans on
reviving this route, making Bicol to
Manila on train to be possible again.

The Naga - Legazpi train route was

suspended in 2017 due to the lack of
coaches and broken railways. Even with
the long stretch of suspended routes on
the PNR South Long Haul, the Bicol
Express still accommodated 486, 956
passengers in 2022 according to the
Government Commission for GOCC’s
(GCG) Validated 2022 Performance
Scorecard which is double the passenger
traffic the previous year with 224, 242
commuters. It is also generally more
efficient at transporting passengers from
place to place as it can fit more
passengers than any other mode of
transportation and its general lack of
traffic makes it a good option for
long-haul travelers.
Since its return into operational status, the 101 kilometer route of
Naga to Legazpi was welcomed with open arms by the
commuters, ABS-CBN conducted a report on the commuters’
opinion about the return of the train route between Naga and
Legazpi. It was warmly received by long-time commuters even
before it was shut down in 2017 like Ben Antonio, who
reminisced about his days taking the train in the 1980’s traveling
from Naga to Tutuban station. “Maliit pa ako sumasakay na talaga
ako, from Naga to Tutuban station kasi yun ang pinaka mass
transportation noong mga panahon na bata pa ako pero maganda
ngayon, napaka-convenient,” Antonio (2023) said. Also Joram
Bermillo, who welcomed the train because it was safe and it had
less traffic. “Convenient naman kasi less traffic tas pag sa travel
time naman medyo safe,” Joram (2023) stated.

Santos (2024), stated what is the current models of trains

PNR uses in the Naga - Legazpi train route:

As of August 2023, the DHL 9002 and the three-car PC 8302

were being used for the Naga-Ligao, while DHL 9003 and PC
8303 were being used as the Bicol Commuter Train for the
Naga-Sipocot line.

The PNR 9000 class locomotives DHL trains, which are painted
orange, feature the Philippine National Railways logo at the side
of cab doors and front cabs and the Department of Transportation
in the middle.

To wrap it all up, the return of the Naga to Legazpi train was
received with positive reactions from both old people who had
already been using the train prior to its shutting down and younger
people looking for an alternative to bus and vans as not only it has
air conditioning inside which makes it more comfortable to ride in
especially for hours that it will take the trains to go from Naga to
Legazpi and vice versa, it is also cheaper and safer than the main
competition for long distance travels. And this solidifies that
trains are still an integral part of our society even with the rise of
cheap private transportation since not only can it provide an
affordable way of traveling it is also more efficient as it can hold
more passengers while having no traffic along its path. Also as
mentioned above, trains are also used to haul goods over a long
distance and are better and more efficient than other land transport
options.

icolano cuisine has been known for years for its unique creativity. It has been one of
the feelings of pride that bicolanos have; they have been serving these unique dishes
on their tables and even serving them to the world. These unique dishes made Bicol
one of the best tourist spots in the Philippines.

One of the most well-known dishes here in Bicol is Bicol Express. This dish has its unique
process of being made or cooked. Cooking this dish might be challenging for some
beginners, but it will be worth it once it is perfected. Bicol express is a famous recipe among
Bicolanos for its easy preparation and flavor. It is well-known in the Bicol region and has
also become renowned in the Philippines; even Filipino-based restaurants in other countries
have this dish on their menu.

According to (Marketman, 2006), inspired by the Bicol Express train route in the 1960s,
this dish was made by Cely Kalaw. So, how can we make this delicious dish? We will
combine onion, garlic, ginger, coconut milk, green chili peppers, and pork. Cover the pan,
turn on the heat, and boil the mixture. Next, add a portion of the bagoong and around 1 cup
of coconut cream to the pan, stir, and wait for the sauce to reduce to a quarter. After that,
add the remaining bagoong alamang and the remaining coconut cream. Also, remember the
serrano peppers; wait for the sauce to thicken, and our dish is ready to serve. Serve it on a
serving plate; it is best served with rice. This is just one of the dishes that bicolanos can
present. There are a lot more unique dishes around Bicol. Traveling to Bicol with your
family or friends and trying out dishes that suit your taste buds would be nice.
reativity plays a significant role in enlightening us to feel
fulfilled and can provide a sense of purpose. It is through
the creative minds around society, that new arts and trends
tend to emerge and adapt. For instance, in the Philippines, an event
is organized and established to take place from Albay and is
brought into the Bicol region called the Albay Multimedia Arts
Convention. With these, art events are created to showcase talent
for individuals to express themselves through various forms of art.

Since 2016, the Albay Multimedia Arts Convention has served as a pioneering event that
has been establishing the grassroots creative community of the Bicol region. AMAC has
gathered talented artists and creators throughout the different places in Southern Luzon.
In the event, leading artists and creators are invited to celebrate through
community-based programs and activities. This has been the foundation for emerging
talent and creative professionals in the role of the convention’s success and growth.
Moreover, events like AMAC played a crucial role in influencing the adoption of the
Philippine Creative Industry Development Act (RA 11904). This law boosts and
acknowledges the immense potential of the Philippines' creative sector to exemplify the
nation’s artistic excellence. Importantly, this empowers creatives in the Bicol region to
remain competitive in the ever-evolving creative industry.
The Albay Multimedia Arts Convention is a type those many incredible artists. This event is also
of trailblazing event that sets a floor full of similar to what Governor Noel E. Rosal

Rosal joins Ice Cream Festival celebration, 2022).

This year 2024, AMAC announced on their Facebook page that they will be having this kind of event
again this year on September 20 to 22 at Ayala Malls, Legazpi City. Inviting the Bicolano creative
professionals again to participate in the event. It will be another year to allow artists and creators to
showcase their skills and passion for arts. Additionally, uplifting talented people from Bicol to
participate, and not only that we can probably see another new kind of art.
“I'm still wonderstruck about that night”
(Esquejo, 2023) according to someone who
participated named Esquenjo in an ongoing event
of AMAC during September 2023. Additionally,
he was recognized by the people because of his
amazing performance, and while being at the
event he also met new friends aka some of the
local artists who were also there in the event.
Similarly, local artists who also participated in
the event such as music performers, art talk
speakers, and art Professionals experienced the
same thing as Esquenjo experienced.

Moreover, SIYAK also participated in this event since they were invited to join.
SIYAK is a band composed of Bicolano musicians and is based in Legazpi City,
Albay. In view of the individuals who watched the performance of SIYAK, they
were all sharing intense goosebumps and shocking moments throughout the
performance (Zapanta, 2023).

Furthermore, AMAC is one of the greatest organizations

out here in the region. This event is contributing well
enough to create an impact for those people who love and
appreciate arts and skills. With many sets of events that
may contribute to the development and foundation of
emerging talented individuals and with the creation of
new arts. Additionally, binding every skill and arts all
together to create a captivating show.
In conclusion, the Albay Multimedia Arts Convention stands as an anchor of creativity of the
community in the Bicol region, showcasing the talent and passion of the participants. Overall,
this event has helped to bring people together, inspire creatives, and shape the creative
landscape of the region. As we look to the future, this event can give a lot of opportunities for
talented artists to participate and support nurturing talents. Because of the many participative
artists and creators, this event can ensure the spirit of creativity continues to thrive, inspire,
and enrich the generations to come. Moreover, this also established the foundation of the
creative community of the Bicol region. Throughout Bicol, this has been the biggest event
celebrating creativity with thousands of audience members at its core.
lbay is one of the most famous provinces here in Bicol because of the Mayon
Volcano. Though the volcano is one of its highlights, let us not forget the
eye-catching places that make the tourists go back to the province from time to time.
Various mesmerizing spots are available in the province and each is unique in its ways.

These two places have a special place in my heart because when we have spare
time when we go to Albay, we visit these places especially when we gather as a
family which happens once in a blue moon. If you want a place where you just
want to enjoy the cold breeze while enjoying the view of the famous Mayon
Volcano, I believe that Sumlang Lake is the perfect place for you. If you want a

Let's take a look at Sumlang To be able to get inside, you appreciating the beautiful view

Now, we move forward to Daraga, Albay. Aside
from Sumlang Lake, there is another place that
offers an overlooking view of the Mayon Volcano,
The FarmPlate. This is located in Gabawan,
Daraga, Albay. The road to this place is similar to
Sumlang Lake, though it’s more spacious but if you
don’t know the directions, you might get lost since
it is not like other spots that are along the highway
and easy to find.

On Mondays until Thursdays, they accommodate guests as early as 7:00 A.M. to 9:00
P.M., while on Fridays until Sundays, they are open from 7:00 A.M. until 10:00 P.M.
For the entrance fees, Php 85 for adults while Php 60 for children below 12 years old.
The place is spacious and if you long for a gram-worthy and aesthetic area, The
FarmPlate is perfect! You can also enjoy various inclusions such as free use of a
bonfire from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M.,

There are numerous parts of the place that are considered as

their “signature mark”. An example of this is the famous red
barn where you can also sleep, in case you decide to spend the
night there. You can also take pictures using the barn as your
backdrop. It feels like a farm because of the barn and the
different animals, flowers, and the like. Cottages are also
available if you want to relax while enjoying the view and
chit-chatting with your friends! Campsites are also available if
you want to try camping and several activities are also
available such as bonfire and BBQ Grilling. (Requintana, n.d.)
Another example is The Little Chapel, the
smallest chapel in the Philippines. In this area,
you can pray and reflect as this place is really
quiet and calm. Inside the church, you’ll see a
big crucifix made out of wood and a small
table that serves as the tabernacle. Seats and
kneelers are also available for the tourist’s
convenience when they pray. You can also see
an overlooking view of the Mayon Volcano
outside the church (Farmplate in Daraga
Albay, n.d.)

Aside from its gram-worthy spots, there are also food stalls available. With its affordable
prices, your cravings will surely be satisfied. Or, if you want to save money, you might
want to try to bring your mats and food as picnic areas are available. They also offer
different country foods in the Country Store where you can buy foods and pasalubongs. I
believe they sell different sari-sari store products, an iconic store in the Philippines where
you can buy products such as cup noodles and canned goods for a cheaper price compared
to a convenience store. Rice meals and several Filipino desserts, delicacies, and other
organic products are also available in the country store.

Summarily, these two places are truly one of

Albay’s treasures. Albay is one of the provinces
with the most abundant resources or ecotourism
sites. From the scenery to the service and to the
food, visiting this precious province makes it
worthwhile. For its affordable prices with lots of
inclusions, surely your stay will be worth it and
memorable.
hen we think about Albay, we usually think about the world-famous volcano
named Mayon, and it is the most visited scenery of Albay because of its almost
perfect cone shape. With Mayon’s attractions and activities, together with its
steaming hot characteristic, hunger will fastly succumb to your entire body, and with that
hunger and heat, you will crave something cold. Though it may seem rather peculiar, the
Bicol region is known for having the taste for spiciness and the majority of us put chili on
everything that goes well with it; also the classic dessert which is ice cream—thus inventing
the sili ice cream.

According to SilverBackpacker (2021), ”Sili ice cream

originated from The First Colonial Grill back in 2004
and it may look like a strawberry ice cream but it is
only the color and that it is actually made with “siling
labuyo” (para. 4). The sili ice cream might be a spicy
delicacy, but it tastes good , and it has levels of
spiciness when I tried it a long time ago. Sili ice cream
is one of the desserts that originated in Albay and has
been famous in the neighboring provinces and is served
in the First Colonial Grill, especially in Naga.
Although they have invented a local dessert that will match the palate of the
Bicolanos, they have not been acknowledged enough in the food industry in
the Bicol Region. The sili ice cream tastes good to me. The spiciness blends
well with the sweetness and with the cold feeling too. It blends well together
and does an amazing job in satisfying my taste buds. I like a lot of spicy
foods and sili ice cream is one of the best desserts that I have tried. The sili
ice cream has 3 types of spiciness if you to yourself feel that you may not
handle too much hotness you can choose the lowest level of spiciness for you
to savor the ice cream and still feel that kick of the “labuyo” that has been
mixed in the sili ice cream. The highest level might be a little too much for
most people and will not enjoy the dessert. Having a taste for spiciness is
sometimes bad because too much spiciness can lead to disease or maybe
some just want the thrill it brings to the taste buds.

According to Kareen (2016), ”The sili ice cream is a must try. Colonial
Grill does not only offer spicy ice cream, but they also offer other
flavors for people that don’t have a palate for spicy things” (para.1).

The ice cream that you can have is not

only sili ice cream but also lemon ice
cream that will dilute the taste of the sili
ice cream.
Albay does not only focus on spiciness they also have a snack that would make you eat it more
and more and has a reasonable price and will make you buy it because of the addicting taste.
Imagine a snack that is made of grinded rice and a special filling of macapuno inside of it. Rice
puto is like tasting heaven and is a memorable feeling.

According to Gem Muzones (2024), ”There are a lot of rice puto macapuno in Ligao Albay
because it is where it had originated and there are almost a store in every part of the
highway” (para. 76).

The rice puto macapuno has a reasonable price and it is cheap for many people but it could help
people that are selling it, because some make it for their living. The puto macapuno reached a
lot of places here in Region V and it also reached the Unang Hirit that is in the local news. With
these delicacies, why not visit Albay, not only with a pretty view, you could also have a very
delicious snack with a pair of the famous sili ice cream.
The snack that has been in my childhood, especially when we will go to church every Sunday
in San Francisco church. The rice puto outside San Francisco is one of my favorites, and it
tastes so good that I want to just stay there and eat a lot of puto. Rice puto is a part of my
childhood because of the taste that reminds me every time, and even now I still buy that same
rice puto every time I come across the church. Like sili ice cream, the rice puto also reached
the parts of Bicol and even the Philippine television at Umagang kay Ganda. Rice puto from
albay is really good too, especially when the delicacy is newly cooked. The taste of the
macapuno inside the rice puto tastes immaculate. Everytime I eat rice puto it is like my
childhood comes back to me that I’m ready to go home and play and all the fun times, it is
like having a whole flashback of what I like doing in my free time. Rice puto is a delicacy in
Albay and everytime we go there we buy a lot of it and will bring it home as what we call
“pasalubong” or a souvenir for family members. We all have different taste buds, and some
might say the rice puto is not the best tasting for them but it is the best for me, and you should
try it before judging the delicacy. According to BEBS (2021), ”the rice puto macapuno has a
simple recipe that consists of rice flour, oil, coconut, sugar, yeast, water, and salt” (para. 6).
Rice puto may seem like a basic Filipino snack that everyone can easily make in the comfort
of their homes. However, I guarantee that the rice puto from Albay will always be like no
other. The time and effort of traveling to the province will definitely be worth it. The sweet
and flavorful macapuno that they put in the rice puto makes it perfect. Snacking on rice puto
is a perfect end to a day full of hunger-inducing activities or a long journey. The scenery of
Mayon paired with these snacks will be so relaxing and will make you want to go to Albay
more and more.
To sum things up, there are original delicacies that came from albay and will always be a
part of Bicol’s delicacy. Albay is not only about Mayon, visitors need to also try the
delicacies that are always in the tastes of people and will be a fun experience for a lot of
visitors. Albay has a lot of activities for you to do that will make you crave for these
delicacies and will not only satisfy you but will make you remember what the delicious
snacks that the province could offer and is not only about the perfect cone volcano. Albay
can give you a memorable experience, and the hospitality of people in the province will
make you go back again and again.

You need to pack and be in Albay for these

delicious delicacies to try and be relaxed. The
province is a great place to spend with your family
and friends and will have an impact not only for
your minds but also to your pallets and will always
be open for new tourists and will gladly
accommodate the tourists with our friendly
community.
heater, not to be confused with the “structure” definition, is an artistic endeavor that
collaborates with performers to express meaning and message through words, voice,
movement, and visual features. This particular art form is famous in the Philippines
through established theater groups and companies that showcase the richness of the craft such as
Tanghalang Pilipino, a resident drama company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and
Gantimpala Theatre Foundation, a theatrical group that prides itself on producing high-caliber
shows, with a focus on showcasing original Filipino plays and other dramatic literary
masterpieces that are incorporated into the curriculum. Besides these well-known
master-of-the-art theater corporations, there is one group that stands out from the rest—Sining
Banwa.
With the recent basic acting workshop facilitated by
Jobert Landeza, a well-known theater director, for
AD-2D AVFX at Ateneo de Naga University, Sining
Banwa was introduced to aspiring performers and artists
on a wider scale in Bicol.

To provide context, establishing its gates back in 2011, Sining Banwa is an

interdisciplinary arts group that is non-stock and non-profit based in the
Philippine province of Legazpi City, Albay. During its early years, it built its
foundation with frivolity that later turned to gold. In an interview with Julyses
Belga, a junior artist of the group in 2014, she shared, “We do our meetings at
members’ houses, sometimes at the park, [and] even at the boulevard.” Because
of their state, “they are often tagged as a ‘guerilla’ group as they don’t have a
permanent rehearsal and performance venue” (Saysay, 2014).

Moreover, with its history, the autonomous cultural institution seeks to establish
spaces for exploring and speculating about theater and performance through the
study and application of several artistic disciplines, including visual arts, music,
dance, and literature. Through this voyage, they were able to set sight on what
they would focus on as they molded the layers of the institution.

Consequently, the theater group visualized a community with the goal of

creating artistic works that are representative of the social realities both locally
and nationally. It seeks to make use of a variety of performance spaces,
including parks, barangay halls, streets, marketplaces, colleges, and even
sidewalks.

Furthermore, the institution is famous for its intricate productions that serve as their
exemplary roots. Each theatrical season has included a different assortment of stories
on stage, capturing viewers' attention and creating a lasting impression, ranging from
heroic tales and folklore to contemporary dramas.

Not only that, over the past decade, theater enthusiasts in Legazpi City have been
treated to a remarkable array of productions as part of the annual theater season
Sining Banwa holds.

The inaugural season, spanning from 2011 to 2012, booted off with "Tatlong Libong Bayani
ng Ibalong," a production that delved into the rich mythology of the region, enchanting
audiences with its vivid storytelling and mesmerizing performances.
Building on the success of the first season, the following years saw an expansion of themes and
narratives. the spotlight shifted to introspective and thought-provoking dramas. "Santo Agua"
and "Magdakop Kitang Paros" delved into themes of redemption and forgiveness, while "Si Al
buda an Tsinelas" offered a whimsical yet profound exploration of the human experience. Upon
reflection of theatrical seasons, it is evident that theater has been an integral part of our
community, offering a forum for celebration, introspection, and expression.

All in all, the legacy of Sining Banwa reminds us

of the power that art holds to bring people together,
inspire, and elevate us as we look to the future.
Organizations like Sining Banwa are essential to
maintaining our legacy and establishing the
cultural environment for future generations in a
world where change is perpetual even on a
provincial scale like the ever-admirable Albay.
ndulge in the beauty of this hidden getaway resort
located on the island of Cagraray in Albay. Spend
your leisure time under the trees or venture under
the sun while enjoying the various activities offered by
the resort. It is a well renowned resort due to their
amazing service and amenities that will level up the
travelers stay. With all the aforementioned details, the
resort surely has amazing features that would catch the
eyes of travelers and would make them fall in love
with its natural beauty. Now, let’s dive further into this
roller coaster vacation and uncover the beauty that
awaits.

To reach Misibis Bay, it would take approximately a 90-minute ride from Legazpi
(Admin-Misibis, 2024). Upon reaching the resort, just less than 10 meters from the shore, at
the Marina Bay, a school of fish awaits the arrival of the tourists. Additionally, a returning
traveler, Stephen Harris, came back to visit Misibis Bay after 9 years. He had a comment about
the improvements in life beneath the land in the area; he said, “There’s a lot of developments
compared to our last visit, along with coral homes with diverse colors of fish and marine life”
(Barcia, 2018). His statement implies that the resort is not only beautiful above but also below.
Alongside the continuous maintenance and improvements of the resort, they also take care of
the marine life within their area.
Upon entering the hotel, you will be greeted by their accommodating staff with big smiles on
their faces. Class and elegance can be seen throughout the resort. With rooms being neat and
comfortable they also offer something better than your typical room which is the Pacific View
rooms. These rooms as stated in the name gives you an awing view of the shore to give an extra
vibe of calmness (Villareal, n.d.).

Their cuisine offers food ranging from Bikolano to Western dishes. The three restaurants they
have are named: Dela Playa, Spice Market, Seafood Shack. If you love the traditional spice like
Bikolanos, well then the Spice Market is perfect for you. They serve Bikol’s specialty dishes,
also various meals and drinks(Misibis Bay Review, 2017). Moreover, some dishes are affordable
but some are a bit pricey—nevertheless, delicious. Lastly, we can’t forget about their buffet with
prices around ₱700-₱800. Their food services have never failed to impress the palate of
customers truly living up to the reputation of the place.
Moving on, get your sunblocks ready as we embark into
experiencing their entertaining activities that will for sure be
a record for the books! For one, ATV isn’t an uncommon
activity, however, what makes this experience different from
the others is that you get to experience this before dawn.
From the resort to the top of a hill you’ll be getting an
astonishing view as you watch the sunrise alongside the
Mayon volcano (Dimen, 2022). Now that is what we call a
perfect match! A scenic view to welcome a new day filled
with adventure because in Misibis bay, the fun never ends!

Now that the sun is up, there’s nothing like a morning dip in the sea. Even
so, the beach is more appreciable during the afternoon when the sun is high
in the sky and the colors are more vibrant. What’s more is the sea water is
clean and perfect for those who want to swim (Chris, 2015). Make sure not
to stay too long under the sun, a sunburn could interrupt your experience for
the rest of your stay.

Aside from the typical surfing, they offer customers

their very own Wind Surfing. It is a sport where you
surf while holding on to a sail. Because the resort is
situated at a beach, it is a perfect sport to try if you
are looking for something thrilling to do. Although
this activity isn’t always available. They factor in
different conditions that need to be met in order to
ensure that the customers will be able to fully
experience it properly and safely.
It is known that they have a lot of activities on land. Come and let’s dive to meet the marine life
that resides in their own paradise. Snorkeling is one way to explore the beauty that hides
beneath the island. It is an activity in which you use a device called snorkel in order to breathe.
In contrast to diving, in snorkeling you only swim at the surface of the water. With the beautiful
corals and the diversity of marine life, one will surely be in love with it!

What makes this resort special is that they take everything into consideration. If there are
activities outside, they also have activities indoors. They have multiple games and sports like
pool, table tennis, and even a workout area! (Cheng, 2024) said that, “The place gave me a
feeling of ‘warmth’” she added, ”It was cold and breezy, so it might make you cuddly.” People
who visit the place are guaranteed to be relieved from their fatigue.
Finally, after a long day, to wind down one can
enjoy the Sula bar located beside the pool. A shot
of tequila watching the sunset with a cool
atmosphere, that sure does sound something that
could alleviate anyone’s exhaustion. Before the
day ends, don’t forget to visit the Essences Spa
which offers high quality massage and will
definitely help you have a goodnight sleep.

As you can see, Misibis bay has an exceptional lineup of activities, staff, accommodation, and
amenities which gives it the elegance and high-class vibes. In addition, you can enjoy all of
these while having grand exclusivity. With all of these building up the resort as a whole, it is
most definitely a place worth a revisit. However, are all of these facts? The only way to find out
is to pack your bags and come and experience it on your own!
eorge Pendle once said, “If airports can be seen
as temples to travel, gateways to other worlds,
then airport carpets are vast prayer mats upon
which we all genuflect”. Airports are an essential part of
modern society, playing a part in shaping the world’s
economy, mobility patterns, and social relationships.
Seeing an airport makes you feel like you're in a new
atmosphere because of the different ethnicities you
encounter, the stalls that excite your heart, and of course
that feeling of joy that you will ride an airplane and go to
your desired destination. The Bicol International Airport
has been one of the most important infrastructures here
since Region V will finally be open for international
flights. That said, let’s talk about the Wings of Bicol, the
Bicol International Airport!

Albay tourism has been massively growing, from January to September 2023, the number
of local tourists increased by 48.99 percent with 906,870 locals visiting Albay compared to
the number of visitors in 2022 in the same period with 608,593. It is also worth mentioning
that foreigners visiting the place have increased from 835 in 2022 to 5,146 in 9 months as
well. With an increase of tourists coming in, Albay needed a new airport that would be open
not just for domestic flights, but also for international ones. The Bicol International Airport
located in Daraga with a view of Mayon started its planning and has been on the drawing
board since the 1990s, it was one of the four airport expansions in the Philippines.
Despite it being planned in 1996, more corporeal talks of constructing the
new airport began in the mid-2000s when former President Gloria
Macapagal-Arroyo initially acceded to a 1.2 billion budget for the project.
The primary idea was to build an up-to-date, modern airport in Legazpi
that would meet international standards and promote travel and tourism in
the area. Originally, the airport was scheduled to open in 2014 but due to
multiple delays, construction issues, and budgeting problems. Poor
weather conditions and the Coronavirus pandemic didn’t help the
fast-track progress of the project. Constructions of the airport continued in
2018 after being put on hold for 11 years as stated by the Department of
Transportation (DOTr). By September 2020, the project was 68%
completed and DOTr said that the construction is still on course to be
completed and committed to having it fully operational by 2021. After
many unforeseen mishaps and delays, the airport officially opened on the
7th of October 2021 and Cebu Pacific started operations on October 8,
2021. The 4.7 billion peso airport has 17 buildings in total, including a
two-story passenger terminal building. It is 2.5 kilometers long and 45
meters wide. Even though it was announced as an international airport, it
is categorized as a Class 1 principal airport by the CAAP. It is expected to
handle 2 million passengers annually according to the Civil Aviation
Authority of the Philippines. After some time, that number will grow
even further to 4.4 million.

The airport on average has 8 departure flights every day per day with
flights to Manila, Cebu, Davao, Zamboanga, etc. Although it was
expected that international flights would start on the 7th of November
2021, there are no international flights available at this current day but
once they open international flights it will be very helpful because usually
when Bicolanos want to travel to other countries, they have to take a
bus/plane to go to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to fly
to abroad. This airport will help Bicolanos because they can directly now
travel abroad without any hassle and can save less. It will boost foreign
arrivals in the region. The initiative will make “Bicol an exciting
international destination by 2028,” as targeted in the Bicol Regional
Development Plan 2023-2028.
The Bicol International Airport is an obliging project not just in Albay, but in the
Bicol region. Although the airport had a lot of setbacks and delays due to poor
budgeting, multiple delays, and the coronavirus, the airport has had a lot of positive
reactions and reviews from the general public since it would be an upgrade from the
aging Legazpi airport and the plans of having international flights will help the
economy of Bicol. People won’t need to worry about taking multiple flights to go to
foreign countries instead one trip to Daraga and they will arrive at their desired
destination. The airport can also help in Bicol tourism since it can bring in locals and
foreigners to the Bicol region and help the overall economy of the region. Lastly, I
expect Bicol tourism to grow every year because of this airport and we should be
thankful for the people who helped in the planning, construction, and operation of the
airport.
ased on its name, the word “sentro” means center, which perfectly describes the hotel
since it is located in the center of Legazpi. It means that several famous tourist spots,
malls, cafes, or other places where you can spend your free time are located nearby. It is
located in the heart of Legazpi, Albay, and is close to the airport, which is beneficial for
travelers who’ve come from a faraway place. On top of the convenience that it offers, travelers
also get a luxurious stay in this hotel, which enhances their stay in Legazpi.

The location surely is something to boast about; however, this isn’t the only thing that makes
the hotel a great choice to stay in. A good hotel must have excellent management, service,
cleanliness, location, environment, and an affordable price (Best Business Magazines and News
Online - CIO Bulletin, 2022). Now, let’s delve further into the wonders of Hotel Sentro Legazpi.

As aforementioned, one of the best features of this hotel is its location.
Because of its highly accessible location, travelers can utilize this to their
advantage when they are taking trips. We were able to travel to different

A hotel’s environment consists of human resources, financial resources,

information resources, physical resources, technological resources, and the
hotel’s overall tradition—how things are done and executed (Sawyers,
2019). Although we don’t have enough information about these factors, we
can say that Hotel Sentro Legazpi has a safe, productive, and efficient
environment. This can be seen all throughout the hotel, from the polite staff
to the amenities and exemplary service. We were able to enjoy all of these
during our stay at the hotel. Thus, based on these observations, we can

In connection with the 2022 General Appropriations Act (GAA), the country will undergo its
highly-awaited innovation in the field of science and technology—its establishment is at Albay.
The Bicol Science For Chance (S4C) will be the first-ever “science for change” facility in the
Philippines—creating a new realm for scientific-related research and productivity in a
state-of-the-art way.

Albay Rep. Joey Salcedo stated once the facility is highly available in a wider aspect, the center
is expected to help students, higher education institutions, researchers, medium-sized and
micro-enterprises, and public and private stakeholders. With this, society, especially people
living near the Albay region, encapsulates the advancement of a field that seems so foreign to
us.

Nestled within the beautiful landscapes and

breathtaking panoramas of Albay, in the heart
of the Philippines, is a breakthrough program
that has the potential to change the country's
scientific landscape completely. The Bicol
Science For Chance (S4C) is a groundbreaking
institution that will usher in a new era of
scientific investigation and technological
growth.

Fundamentally, the Bicol S4C stands for more than simply a tangible structure; it is an
expression of an ongoing commitment to leveraging knowledge and creativity to tackle urgent
social issues. This cutting-edge institution is a ray of hope, providing a haven where scientists,
researchers, students, and entrepreneurs can unite, work together, and spark change.
The Bicol S4C is remarkably appealing due to its focus on the philosophy of
"science for change." Unlike conventional research establishments, which
might be sequestered in ivory towers, this facility is firmly grounded in the
values of accessibility and inclusivity. It serves as evidence for the idea that
science ought to be a force for good in society rather than being in a
vacuum.

As this ground-breaking project comes to an end, its effects are anticipated

to extend well beyond Albay. The Bicol S4C has the ability to spur
economic growth and unlock unrealized potential by fostering a thriving
innovation ecosystem. With mentorship and access to state-of-the-art
materials, students will be equipped to become the next wave of scientific
trailblazers.

Collaborative opportunities will also benefit higher education institutions by

encouraging multidisciplinary research projects that push the boundaries of
knowledge. With cutting-edge facilities and specialized equipment, the Bicol
S4C provides a dynamic platform for researchers, both seasoned veterans
and aspiring academics, to explore their inquiry.

Nonetheless, the Bicol S4C's influence goes far beyond the classroom.
Through the facility's resources, microenterprises and medium-sized
businesses can innovate and compete in an increasingly international
marketplace. These businesses stand to acquire crucial insights and support.
Both public and commercial players have a stake in this initiative's success
because they understand its potential to spark broad socioeconomic
development.

Ultimately, the Bicol S4C's establishment is a victory for the

surrounding community. For the residents of Albay and the surrounding
areas, it signals the start of a brand-new age marked by opportunity, wealth,
and advancement—well-positioned to steer the ship toward a more
promising and sustainable future by embracing innovation and teamwork.
