Anchor2: For our International News, we have Search for 4 kids missing after deadly Amazon plane crash
leaves Colombia on edge, Franz take the lead

1st F.R. Franz:

Thank you, Brealyn, Colombians were on edge on Friday as authorities searched for four Indigenous
children who were on a small plane that crashed in the Amazon jungle this month but have not been
found. The three adults aboard died.

The crash happened in the early hours of May 1 when the Cessna single-engine propeller plane with six
passengers and a pilot declared an emergency due to an engine failure. The small aircraft fell off radar a
short time later and a frantic search for survivors began.

The children, members of the Uitoto Indigenous community, were identified as 13 year old Lesly
Jacobombaire Mucutuy; Soleiny Jacobombaire Mucutuy who is 9 years old; Tien Noriel Ronoque
Mucutuy, 4 years old; and Cristin Neriman Ranoque Mucutuy, who is only 11 months old.

A report said that the children had boarded a boat on the Apaporis River heading toward the village of
Cachiporro. But unfortunately the children were not found on board when the boat arrived.

Anchor2: And up next we have, we have our economics’ news, BIR adjusts cigarette, and vape floor
prices, Feona Mariano, Take the lead.

4th F.R. Feona Mariano:

Thank you, Brealyn, The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has updated floor prices of cigarettes, heated
tobacco, vaporized nicotine, and non-nicotine products.

Based on a memorandum circular issued May 5, the new floor price for a pack of cigarettes is P 114.60
while a ream now costs P1,146.00. The minimum price of a pack of heated tobacco products was also
adjusted to P120.40. For vapor products, a pod of nicotine salt now has a minimum price of P200 for 2ml
and P354.97 for 4ml. A bottle of conventional freebase or classic nicotine also costs at least P179.20
(10ml), and P403.20 (30ml).

According to the BIR, the new floor price or minimum retail price was based on the sum of production
cost or the total landed cost, and the total of excise tax and value-added tax (VAT) of the tobacco
product.

“Any seller offering below these floor prices is not paying their proper taxes. They are illegal traders.
Their warehouses and stores will be raided. The BIR will file criminal cases against these illegal tobacco
and vape traders,” Lumagui said in a statement on Thursday.

This is Feona Mariano, reporting.

Anchor 1: And last but not least, we have our science news, we have Liora Corciega on Community
Support and Mental Health

6th F.R. Liora Corciega:

The world today faces a number of challenges, and, in the hope of improving the lives of generations to
come, it is vital these challenges are tackled urgently. The recently published Springer Nature
Sustainable Business Report aims to outline the key approaches to unlocking the potential of open
science and research to accelerate solutions to the world’s most urgent challenges.

Springer Nature already has strong links with the charity, through Editor-in-chief Sir Philip Campbell,
who is part of the MQ Science Council, and Springer Nature recently hosted the first in-person MQ Data
Science Meeting since the pandemic with Deutsche Bank.

For years mental illness has not been taken as seriously as its physical counterpart, and, due to chronic
underfunding, it is clear that mental health services require outside investment. It’s for this exact reason
that Springer Nature felt it necessary to support MQ through this donation. However, as the world
continues through the post-pandemic mental health crisis, it’s plainly obvious that other businesses
must also show their commitment to their communities.
