Essential Drawing Equipment Guide

The document discusses lab equipment required for engineering drawings, including drawing sheets, pencils in various grades, erasers, scales, set squares, protractors, compasses, French curves, circle stencils, tissue paper, and calculators. Students are asked to bring A2 size scholar sheets and the listed equipment to the next lab.

Lab-Module-Week-1

This lab module provides introduction to drawing equipment required during lab work. You
must bring the discussed lab equipment for the lab work of Lab-Module-Week-2. The
following equipment are required in the engineering drawing lab.

Drawing Sheets
The sizes of drawing sheets defined by ANSI/ASME Standards, along with the margins are
given as;

Nearest International International Margin Standard US Size US Margins

Size (mm) (mm) (in) (in)
A4 (210 × 297) 10 A (8.5 × 11) 0.50
A3 (297 × 420) 10 B (11 × 17) 0.50
*A2 (420 × 594) 10 C (17 × 22) 0.50
A1 (594 × 841) 20 D (22 × 34) 0.50
A0 (841 × 1189) 20 E (34 × 44) 0.50
*The Drawing sheets of A2 size will be used in this lab.

Note: You will ask for “full scholar sheets” from the shopkeeper. The scholar sheets are rough
on one side and plain on the other side. The Drawing will be done on the rough side of the
scholar sheet.

Pencils
The drawing pencils use graphite as pigment material which is combined with polymer or clay
binder in various proportions to achieve required hardness. There are 18 grades of pencils
starting from 9H being the hardest to the 7B being the softest. The grades that a student must
possess are from 3H to 3B, while other grades are optional.

Hard Medium Soft

Figure 1: Pencil Grades
There are two types of pencils, one that require sharpening, other does not require sharpening.
The pencil in figure-2a requires sharpening using a sharpener and figure-2b requires sharpening
using abrasive (sand) paper.

Figure 2: Pencils for Drawing

The pencil in Figure-2c comes with a thin lead with sizes of 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 or 0.9 mm. If you buy
this pencil, you must buy the leads of different grades for different sizes, this may prove
expensive and is recommended for professionals in industries.

Eraser/Eraser Guide
The eraser should be soft and of good quality to erase all the carbon and to avoid the paper tear.
The eraser guide as shown should be used when erasing from a drawn sheet to avoid over-
erasing.

Sharpener/ Abrasive paper

The sharpener is used to make the tip conical and abrasive paper (commonly knows as sand
paper) is used for fine shaping and making chisel head.

Figure 4: Chisel Head

Scale
The students should have at least one scale of 30mm or 12in length. The scale may be a standard
scale as shown in figure-5a or an architectural scale as shown in figure-5b.
a. Standard 12” Scale b. Architectural Scale

Figure 5: Scale (12 in)

Set Square
The Set Square consists of one 60-30 right angle triangle and 45-45 right angle triangle. The
size of set square should be above 12” for 60-30 and 9” for 45-45 right angle triangles.

The set square is used to draw angle multiple of 15 up to 1800 without using protractor.
Sometimes the set square come with 1800 protractor and French curves (discussed later in this
module).

Figure 6: Set Square

Protractor
The 360 (full circle) and 180 (half circle) protractors are available in market. The students can
purchase any one of these as per their convenience.
Figure 7: Protractor (3600)

T-Scale
The T Scale size should be larger than 900mm to cover the drawing boards in drawing lab.

Figure 8

Tape
The transparent cellophane tape of more than 0.5” width should be used to fix the sheet with
the drawing table.

Figure 9
Compass
The compass should be of large size with detachable pencil and extendable leg is recommended
for engineering drawing lab.

Figure 10

French Curves
The French curves are used to draw free curves required in engineering drawing.

Standard Circle Stencil

The Standard circle stencils is used to draw small circles impossible to draw by compass. It
also provides robustness by providing circles of standard size and eliminate the need of finding
circle center.

Tissue Papers
The tissue papers are required to keep the drawing sheet, drawing equipment and hand clean
to avoid any dust and carbon on the drawing. The students can buy the tissue rolls to keep
things in budget.

Calculator
Calculator is required to convert the dimensions in different units and during scaling especially
in case of dimensions in decimal. And to perform the trigonometry required during the drawing.

Task
You will bring the scholar sheet and the other above mentioned items along in the next lab
