Syro Malabar Catholic Wedding
DRAFT
In the sacrament of Holy Matrimony, a man and woman by their irrevocable
personal consent enter into a covenant by which they establish between
themselves a partnership for the whole life. This covenant is by its very
nature is ordered toward the good of the spouses and to the procreation of
children. Through the sacrament, the spouses are united by God after the
pattern of Christ’s indefectible union with the Church and so are consecrated
and strengthened by sacramental grace. In a sacramental marriage, God’s
love becomes present to the spouses in their total union and flows through
them to their family and community. Within the tradition of the Syro Malabar
Catholic Church, the priests are witnesses to the mutual consent given by
the spouses, and for the validity of the sacrament, their blessing is necessary.
Elements of the Sacrament of Matrimony in the Syro Malabar Rite
The Catholic Church holds the exchange of consent between the spouses
to be the indispensable element that “makes the marriage.” In the Eastern
Catholic tradition, specifically within the sacrament of matrimony celebrated
in the Syro Malabar rite, includes some unique elements that are contained
within the ceremony that complement the consent exchanged between the
spouses. These unique elements include the Thaali, exchange of wedding
rings, and Manthrakodi.
Thaali
The Syrian Catholic Thaali is a gold heart-shaped pendant embossed with
a cross, the symbol of Christian faith. The heart symbolizes the concept
of love and the cross symbolizes Christ’s suffering and resurrection. The
cross on the thaali is made with 7 small beads. This 7 is the result of the
representation of the seven sacraments. The threads for the thaali are
taken from the “Manthrakodi.” Seven pieces of threads are taken and they
are folded into three. The bride groom ties the thaali on the neck of the
bride. This kind of knot is known as a male knot (Aankettu) symbolizing
the stability of marriage. Every woman considers the Thaali to be the
most prestigious token of love offered to her by her husband during the
ceremony.
Wedding Rings
It is a plain ring without engravings or adornments. The perfect roundness of
the ring symbolizes the hope that the marriage will be one of simple beauty,
free from strife or conflict, which might destroy its perfect “roundness.” Just
like a circle has no ends, the marriage also is eternal.
Manthrakodi
“Manthra” means specially blessed and “kodi” means new clothes. The
placing of the Manthrakodi upon the bride’s head symbolizes Rebecca who
took a veil and covered herself when she first saw Isaac. This was an act of
humility, chastity and devotion to her lifelong partner united in marriage by
God (Genesis 24:16). The groom, henceforth, accepts the responsibility to
cherish and care for his bride.

Liturgy of the Word (please be seated)
First Reading (Genesis 2: 18-24)
Lector: A reading from the book of Genesis, chapter 2,
verses 18 - 24. Bless me, my lord.
C: May God bless you.
The Lord God said: “It is not good for the man to be alone. I
will make a suitable partner for him. ”So the Lord God formed
out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of
the air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would
call them; whatever the man called each of them would be its
name. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of
the air, and all wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable
partner for the man.
So the Lord God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he
was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place
with flesh. The Lord God then built up into a woman the rib
that he had taken from the man.
When he brought her to the man, the man said: “This one,
at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; This one
shall be called ‘woman,’ for out of ‘her man’ this one has been
taken.” That is why a man leaves his father and mother and
clings to his wife, and the two of them become one body.
A: Praise be to the Lord, our God

Hymn of Praise
C: The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
With the hymns of the Holy Spirit, and the hymns of Alleluia, let
us commemorate, the heavenly marriage, let us now celebrate
on this altar.
Ch: The firmament declares the works of his hands. (Refrain)
C: Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
(Refrain)
S: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Let us pray, peace be with us.
C: Lord our God, illumine our hearts and minds to hear and
understand the sweet voice of Your life-giving and divine
Commandments. In Your mercy and grace, grant that they
bear in us the fruits of love, hope, and salvation beneficial to
our body and soul and that we may constantly praise You. The
Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, the Lord of all, forever.
A: Amen
Second Reading (Ephesians 5:20-33)
Lector: A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians,
chapter 5, verses 20 through 33. Bless me my lord.
C: May Christ bless you.
Brothers and sisters:
Live in love, as Christ loved us. Husbands, love your wives,
even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for
her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the
word, that he might present to himself the church in splendor,
without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be
Holy and without blemish.
So also husbands should love their wives as their own bodies.
He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one hates his own
flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ
does the church, because we are members of his body. For
this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be
joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This
is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the
church.
A: Praise be to Christ, our Lord.

Gospel Reading (John 2:1-11)
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and
the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were
also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the
mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” [And] Jesus
said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My
hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servers, “Do
whatever he tells you.” Now there were six stone water jars
there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty
to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So
they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Draw some
out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it. And
when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine,
without knowing where it came from (although the servers
who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the
bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first,
and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but
you have kept the good wine until now.” Jesus did this as the
beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his
glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.
A: Glory to you Christ, Our Lord.

Third G’hantha Prayer
DRAFT
C: Lord our God! Together with the heavenly hosts we give You
thanks. We glorify and bless God the Word, hidden offspring
from Your bosom. He is Your own likeness and splendor, and
the image of Your own Being. Setting aside His equality with
You, He emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant. Born of
a woman He became a complete human being with a rational,
intelligent, and immortal soul, and a mortal body. He subjected
Himself to the law, in order to redeem those who were under
the law. He left for us the memorial of our salvation, this
redemptive mystery, which we now offer before You.
C: Lord our God, we commemorate the passion of Your beloved
Son as He taught us. On the night He was handed over, Jesus
took bread in His pure and Holy hands, lifted up His eyes to
heaven, to You the adorable Father, blessed it, broke it, and
gave it to the disciples, saying: “This is my Body which is
broken for you for the forgiveness of sins. Take this all of you
and eat it.”
A: Amen
C: Likewise, taking the cup, He gave thanks, blessed it, and gave it
to them saying: “This is my Blood of the new covenant, which
is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins. Take this all of you
and drink from it.”
A: Amen
C: Whenever You gather together in my name, do this in memory
of me. (All bow in reverence)
C: Lord, as You have commanded us, we Your humble, weak, and
distressed servants are gathered together in Your presence.
You have showered upon us such great blessings for which we
can never thank You enough. To make us share in Your divine
life, You assumed our human nature, restored us from our fallen
state, and brought us from death to life eternal. Forgiving
our debts, You sanctified us sinners, enlightened our minds,
defeated our enemies, and glorified our frail nature by Your
immense grace.
We give You glory and honor, thanksgiving and adoration for
all Your favors and graces You have granted us. Now, + always,
and forever.
A: Amen
Jimmy & Anita - January 28, 2023 17
S: Pray in your hearts. Peace be with us.

head of the universal Church, for the Major Archbishop, Mar
George, the father and head of our Church, for Bishop Mar
Joy, the father and head of our diocese, for all bishops, for the
entire Holy Catholic Church, for priests, consecrated men and
women, lay leaders, rulers, and all those who are in authority,
Lord, Mighty God, receive this Qurbana.
A: Lord, graciously receive this Qurbana.
