ATOMIC STRUCTURE
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
✓To explain the structure of an atom in terms of the positions, relative
masses, and relative charges of sub-atomic particles.
✓To define the terms atomic number and mass number.
✓To define the terms isotopes and relative atomic mass (Ar).
✓Determine the electronic configuration of elements and their ions with
proton number 1 to 20, e.g. 2,8,3
Success Criteria
I CAN……
- Explain the structure of an atom in terms of the positions,
relative masses and relative charges of sub-atomic particles
electronic.
- Define the terms atomic number, mass number, isotopes
and relative atomic mass (Ar ).

OBJECTIVE 2: Define the terms atomic number, mass number.
MINI PLENARY 1
1. What is an atom?
2. Define a molecule.
3. What are the charges on Proton, Neutron and electrons?

OBJECTIVE 2: Define the terms atomic number and mass number.
MINI PLENARY 2
1. What is the relationship between the number of protons and number of electrons in
atoms?
2. Do the number of protons, neutrons or electrons determine what the element is?
3. Why do you think it’s called a mass number?
ATOMIC STRUCTURE
OBJECTIVE 3: Define the terms isotopes and relative atomic mass (Ar ).
Isotopes of the same element have the same
chemical properties because they have the same
number of electrons and therefore the same
electronic configuration
