031 PHYSICS 1
Time: 2:00 hours February, 2024
Instructions
1. This paper consists of sections A,B and C With a total of eleven (11) questions
2. Answer all questions in sections A and B and two questions in section C.
3. Excepts for diagrams that must be drawn in pencils, all writing must be in blue or black ink.
4. non programmable calculators may be used
5. Write your examination number on every page of your answer booklet (s).
6. all communication devices and any unauthorized materials are not allowed in the examination

(c) Explain why gas thermometers are more sensitive and accurate than liquid thermometer
(4marks)

5. (a) i. Explain the meaning of the fundamental interval of temperature scale (1 marks)
ii. Explain how ocean tides occur? (2 marks)
iii. Define the term global warming and mention two gases which contribute to global
warming (3marks)

(b) A wheel and axle of efficiency 80% is used to raise a load of 2000N. If the radius of the wheel
is 0.5m and that of axle is 2cm, calculate the velocity ratio and the mechanical advantage of the
machine (4marks)

(b) i. State Archimedes principle and law of floatation (2 marks)

ii. A balloon has a capacity of 20cm3 and is filled with hydrogen. The balloon fabric and the
container have a mass of 2.5kg. What mass of Cargo can be lifted by the balloon? (Density of
hydrogen=0.089kg/m3 and density of air is 1.29kg/m3 (3marks)

(c) Mention two classes of fire materials and give the appropriate type of fire extinguisher to use (2
marks)

7. (a) Define the term first aid and mention any three ways to ensure laboratory safety (3 marks)

(b) State Newton’s second and third laws of motion (2marks)

(c) Two cars of the same mass collide head-on and become tangle so that they move on together. if
the engines of both cars were stopped at the moment of impact and the speeds of the cars before
impact were 120m/s and 200m/s find their joint velocity immediately after collision (4marks)

8. (a) Mention five properties of electromagnetic waves and give atleast three examples of
electromagnetic waves

(b)

i.Explain why Lightening is seen first before hearing the thunder sounded

ii. Give reason why Frequency note of the same pitch played on a violin and a flute sound
different?

iii. A sinusoidal wave is travelling along a rope. The oscillator that generates the wave completes
40 vibrations in 30 seconds. Also, a given crest of the wave travels 425cm along the rope in 10s.
Calculate the wavelength of the sinusoidal wave.

SECTION C (30 marks)


Answer any TWO questions from this section
9. (a) A step up transformer has 1000turns in the secondary coil and 100turns in the primary coil.
An A.C of 5A Flows in the primary coil when connected to a 12V A.C supply calculates the
voltage across the secondary coil. If the efficiency of the transformer is 90%, calculate the
current in the secondary coil.

(b) (i) Explain how energy losses in a transformer can be reduced by use of a laminated iron
core.
(ii) State Lenz’s law of electromagnetic induction
(c) What is the meaning of kilowatt –hour and give its relationship to the joule. Explain why an
electric fan operating on a very long extension cord does not rotate as fast as one operating on a
short cord
(d) (i) Draw a well labeled diagram of a gold-leaf electroscope

(iii) Distinguish between donor impurity and acceptor impurity giving one example in each

10. (a) A convex lens is used to produce an image of an object on the screen. The object is 100cm
from the lens. If the image produced is four times the size of the object, calculate the object
distance from the lens. (2.5marks)

(b) (i) state the laws of reflection


(ii) State four characteristics of the image formed by a plane mirror
(c) (i) why does the swimming pool appear much shallower than its actual depth ?
(ii) A telescope of 5M diameter with a reflector of a focal 18M is used to focus the image of
the sun. Using the distance of the sun from the earth and diameter of the sun as 1.5 x 10 11M and
1.4 X 10 9M respectively, calculate the position of the sun and the diameter of the image of the
sun.
11. (a) state four applications of bimetallic strip (2marks )
(b) (i) Define coefficient of linear expansion of body and state its S.I units (2marks)
(ii) A 50 watt heater is immersed in a 2kg block of aluminum which also holds a thermometer.
The temperature of the block rises by 8K in 5 minutes. Neglecting heat losses calculate the
specific heat capacity of aluminum (3 marks)
(c) (i) Distinguish between heat and temperature by giving two differences
(ii) Define latent heat and state its S.I Unit (1 mark)
(d) State what changes, if any, take place in the following?
(i) Melting point of ice when salt is added (1 mark)
(ii) Volume of water when it changes to ice (1 mark)
(iii) Boiling point of liquid when pressure on the Liquid is reduced
(e) Mention two factors affecting the freezing point of a liquid (2marks)
