CGC1D SUMMATIVE PROJECT
CREATING POSITIVE CHANGE WITH THE UN SDG’S
INTRODUCTION:
We are living an ever-shrinking world, where our impact and connection to the global community
continues to grow. Our world is facing significant challenges and the time to act is now!
But what impact can an individual make? Don’t worry, you will become part of a global intiative
working towards 17 common goals known as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN
SDGs).
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a global call to action to end poverty, protect the
planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The 17 goals build on the successes of the
Millenium Development Goals (2000 – 2015), and include new areas such as climate change, economic
inequality, innovation, sustainable consumption, peace and justice, among other priorities. The goals
are interconnected – often the key to success on one will involve tackling issues associated with
another.
OVERVIEW:
From mid-April to mid-May, you will research the SDG’s, identifying a different SDG that connects
to each unit from units 2, 3, 4, and 5 that we have studied this year.
For each of your chosen SDG’s you will propose and plan a specific action which someone (like you)
could take towards furthering that specific SDG, contributing to the UN’s target of achieving these
goals by 2030.
You will document the entire process in a written geographic report, to be submitted to TurnItIn
Be creative and innovative with the action you plan, while also keeping it realistic. Consider what
issues are important to you, and what could be done in your local community to promote a specific
SDG.
PROJECT PROCESS:
Pre-task work: Explore all of the UN’s SDG’s by reading about them using the summaries provided
by the UN: https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/sustainable-development-goals/
STEP 1: Choose one SDG and do further research. Summarize (in your own words) the goal itself,
and identify what the problem addressed by this goal looks like at the local and international level
using real-world examples. Complete this in the provided template below, using APA style in-text
citations and Reference List. Note: you will do this stage four times, for four different goals.
STEP 2: For each goal chosen in Step 1, identify and explain a connection to one of the four main
units of this course (Unit 2, 3, 4, & 5). Briefly explain a specific action you could take to advance
each of your chosen SDGs using the “Plan, Prepare, Execute” model. Complete this in the provided
template below. Note: each unit must be connected to a different SDG.
STEP 3: Bring your first completed goal summary & action proposal to our check-in meeting. You
will receive feedback on your early work which should inform your approach to the remaining
three goals. Note: nothing is being graded at this stage.
STEP 4: Complete the research summaries and action proposals for the remaining three goals,
following the same format as the first and incorporating the feedback provided at Step 3.
STEP 5: Submit your finished report (summaries and action proposals for 4 different goals) to
TurnItIn. Your report should have a title page, in-text citations, and an APA-style reference list.

Report Templates
Step 1 – Research – You will complete this step for four goals (one for each of Unit 2, Unit 3, Unit 4, Unit 5)
In a paragraph (of 4-7 sentences), summarize the goal in your own words. (K)
Goal 11 of the Sustainable Development Goals aims to create cities that are inclusive, safe, resilient, and
sustainable. This involves addressing challenges such as urbanization, inequality, inadequate infrastructure, and
environmental degradation. Making cities sustainable means making sure everyone has a fair chance to live
well, taking care of nature, and being ready for disasters. As residents, it's important to help create cities that
are fair, strong, and eco-friendly for the future, Because the decisions made today about city planning and
development affect everyone who lives there for generations.
In a paragraph (of 4-7 sentences), explain the problem connected to this goal from both a local and global
perspective. Note: there should be a direct connection to research in this section (K)
Goal 11 focuses on creating better cities, which is important both locally and globally. Locally, in places like
Ottawa, cities face challenges like crowded housing and traffic jams. Globally, cities are growing fast, leading to
issues like slums and pollution.
Step 2 – Action Proposal – Completed for each of your four SDGs
In a paragraph (4-7 sentences), connect this goal to Unit 2, Unit 3, Unit 4, or Unit 5 from this course (T)
Sustainable Development Goal 11, about making cities better, connects closely with Unit 3, Changing
Populations, where we learned a little about urbanization. Urbanization, the increase of people moving to cities,
is happening everywhere. This affects Goal 11 because crowded cities face challenges like not enough housing
and pollution, which make cities less livable.
In 4-5 sentences, describe an action you could do to contribute to this goal and outine 3 basic steps one would
need to take in order to plan, prepare, and execute the action. (T)
- Plan – What will the action look like? Where will it take place?
- Prepare – What resources will I need? What needs to be done before this can happen?
- Execute – What is the desired outcome, and how does it connect to the chosen SDG?
To contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 11, I could encourage more people to bike to school, something I
already do with my brother my friend Billy and his brother. First, I'd talk to classmates about biking and why it's
cool, I would bring up the eco-friendly aspects and that its actually faster than driving through the city. Then, I'd
make sure everyone has a bike, and knows the safe routes. Finally, when we start biking together, it makes our
city cleaner and better for everyone.
