Baroque
● Favourite instruments: Violin, Organ, Harpsichord***
● Main composers: Bach, Handel, Vivaldi
● Sounds like:
○ music is very ornamented and decorated,
○ terraced dynamics (sudden changes in volume)
○ Fugues (Or canon: layers of the same melody at different times)
Classical
● Favourite instruments: Violin, Piano***, Cello, Flute, Horn
● Main composers: Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven
● Sounds like:
○ Very symmetrical melodies
○ Symphonies (full orchestra plays, made up of different sections)
Romantic
● Favourite instruments: Trombone, Harp, Violin, Piano
● Main composers: Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Dvorak

○ Tell stories and show feelings through music

Composer Facts
German, had 20 children, many of whom played musical instruments, known as the father of modern music
German, his most famous piece “Messiah” he wrote in less than 1 month
Italian, worked in an orphanage for girls where he taught violin, known as “the red priest”
Austrian, known as “papa” even though he never had children, good sense of humor
Austrian, child prodigy who travelled around with his father and sister, wrote music for all instruments
Austrian/German, went completely deaf the last 7 years of his life, composed the 9th symphony during that
