2. What kind of issue do you think illegal drugs, gender inequality, corruption, and poverty are?
LESSON PROPER
Social, Moral, and Economic Issues
If we try to dig deeper, the quote mentioned above points out three of the most prevalent issues in society nowadays, which the
speaker has compared to “leech,” which made the country bleeds. On the other hand, if we are to classify these issues, illegal drugs and
gender inequality fall under social issues, corruption belongs to the moral issue. At the same time, poverty is an example of an economic
issue.
These issues may be interpreted differently by different people, but in general, they all contribute to one complex web of
interrelated points of concern that every country is experiencing. For you to understand more, read the definition and examples of the
three issues.
What is a Social Issue?
Social issues prevent the society from functioning at the most desirable level. An issue becomes a social issue under the following
circumstances:
• The issue involves people in the society.
• The public, as a whole, recognizes the situation as a problem.
• A large segment of the population sees the situation as a valid concern.
• The situation can be alleviated through the joint actions of the citizens.
Common examples of Social Issues in the Philippines:
1. Poverty – is the state of not having enough material possessions
or income for a person’s basic needs
2. Crime – the intentional commission of an act usually deemed socially harmful or
dangerous and specifically defined, prohibited, and punishable under criminal law.
3. Drug Dependency – is defined as a psychic
and physical state of the person characterized by
behavioral and other responses resulting in
compulsions to take a drug, on a continuous
or periodic basis in order to experience its
psychic effect and at times to avoid
the discomfort of its absence.
4. Overpopulation – refers to a population which exceeds its sustainable size
within a particular environment or habitat.
What is a Moral Issue?
Moral issues are situations or actions that do not conform to the shared norms and values, culture, and beliefs distinguished by
a certain community or social setting. An issue becomes a moral issue under the following circumstances:
• It is against the values, beliefs, and preferences of the people in the society.
• It involves behavior patterns that bring the individual repeatedly into conflict with the society.
• It involves actions which have the potential to harm others or the persons themselves.
Common Examples of Moral Issues in the Philippines:
1. Abortion – involves the termination of pregnancy. While other countries consider abortion as legal, it is a moral issue in the Philippines
and is regarded a grievous sin. This action is against the norms and values of the people, the church, and the society. It is illegal under
the law of the land and is highly condemned.
2. Prostitution – the practice of engaging in relatively indiscriminate sexual activity, in general with someone who is not a spouse or a
friend, in exchange for immediate payment in money or other valuables.
3. Stealing – is an act of taking away someone else’s possession without permission. It is morally and illegally wrong as it is against the
ethical standard of the society and it also violates the law of the land.
4. Corruption – is a criminal offence that constitutes the illegal use of public power to gain private interest. This may be done by a person,
a group of people or an organization entrusted with authority.
What is an Economic Issue?
All societies face the economic problem, which is the problem of how to make the best use of limited, or scarce, resources. The
economic problem exists because, although the needs and wants of people are endless, the resources available to satisfy needs and
wants are limited.
In other words, economic issues are situations that reflect the scarcity of resources which are deemed insufficient to satisfy
human wants and needs.
Common examples of Economic Issues in the Philippines:
1. Monopoly of companies and firms – refers to when a company and its product offerings dominate one sector or industry. Monopolies
can be considered an extreme result of free-market capitalism and are often used to describe an entity that has total or near-total control
of a market.
2. Poverty – aside from being a social issue, poverty is also an economic issue making it a socio-economic issue. Poverty becomes an
economic issue when it affects the people’s economic activities. It means people can hardly provide for their food, shelter, education,
and health.
3. Inflation - Inflation rate refers to the rise and fall of prices of commodities at a specific time or period. Inflation becomes an issue when
there is an abrupt increase of price of basic commodities and services making people unable to have the capacity to provide for their
needs and wants.
4. Unemployment – is a term referring to individuals who are employable and actively seeking job but are unable to find a job.
