7.[8.] UNITS AND SYMBOLS

8.[9.]
The units and symbols in this procedure are defined in the relevant chapters.

9.[10.] TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS

For the purpose of this procedure, the following definitions apply
Thermocouple

9.1[10.1] Intermediate check

Intermediate check is a periodic quality check performed for every reference standard while it is
still within calibration date to ensure that is still in good condition. A thermocouple is a pair of
conductorconductors of dissimilar materials joined at one end and forming part of an
arrangement using the thermoelectric effect for temperature measurement.

Measuring junction
The measuring junction is that junction referred to in 6.1 which is subjected to the temperature to be
measured.
Reference junction
The reference junction is that junction of the thermocouple, which is at a known (reference) temperature to
which the measuring temperature is compared.
Tolerance of a thermocouple
9.2[10.2] Reference standard
Measurement standard generally having the highest metrological quality available at a given
location or in a given organization, from which measurements made there are derived

The tolerance of a thermocouple is a specified maximum deviation in degree Celsius from the e.m.f
temperature values in the reference table of Part 1 of the standard IEC-584-1, when the
temperature of the reference junction is at 0oC and the measuring junction is at the appropriate
temperature (toC).

resistance using the relative resistance tables (OIML R84)), from the true (measured) temperature.

9.7[10.7] BestCalibration measurement capability

The smallest uncertainty of measurement that a laboratory can achieve within its scope of
accreditation, when performing more or less routine calibrations of nearly ideal measurement
standards intended to define, realise, conserve or reproduce a unit of that quantity or one or more
of its values, or when
performingPerforming more or less routine calibrations of nearly ideal measuring instruments
designed for the measurement of that quantity.
9.8[10.8] Calibration
Set of operations that establish, under specified conditions, the relationship between values of
quantities indicated by a measuring instrument or measuring system, or values represented by a
material measure or a reference material, and the corresponding values realized by standards.
9.9[10.9] Temperature (t)
Temperature in degrees Celsius (t), is related to the absolute thermodynamic scale, called the
Kelvin (T) scale, by t=T-273.15.
9.10[10.10] Coverage factor
A numerical factor used as a multiplier of the standard uncertainty of measurement in order to
obtain an expanded uncertainty of measurement.

12.1 By the ice point intermediate check

60.1.1[64.1.1] For SPRT: By thishe ice point intermediate check method, the permanent shift of
the resistance value at the ice point measurements shall be less than the maximum of 0.1%
compared to the last history data.

Average ice point reading + correction at 0 in the last history data). The determined

If the ice point resistance increases on annealing at 450 °C, the thermometer may be suffering
from an auto-catalytic oxidation that can occur on occasions. Annealing at 600 °C
may avoid this process.

Set the temperatures of the fluidized bath to reach at 600oC at a slower rate.

See FRM-PMT/TH-003, Annex 1: Data sheet for the calibration of a resistance thermometer by
comparison with a reference platinum resistance thermometer, and

See FRM-PMT/TH-006, Annex 1: Data sheet for calibration of a thermocouple by comparison with a
standard thermocouple By comparison calibration intermediate check method

By this method, the En value is calculated and shall be much less than 1.

Where,

I. t1 and t2 are the corrected temperature values of the thermometers from their
respective calibration certificates at the same calibration point.

II. U1 and U2 are the expanded uncertainty values for the corrected temperature values of
t1 and t2 from their calibration certificates respectively.
