Classroom Management Plan
Classroom Arrangement
Classroom Arrangement Rationale
My room will be arranged in accordance to where the
whiteboard/smartboard at the front of the room. The teacher desk will be
located near the front of the room. This is because I would like to have an
overview of students and be available for them to ask questions when
needed. I would like for my desk to have open space around, so it allows
for easy access for both my students and myself.
In my future classroom, I hope to have a reading/calm down center
that is somewhat isolated from the rest of the room. I would like to have
bookshelves surrounding this area. These bookshelves need to be high
enough so students feel as if they are away from the main classroom, but
yet short enough for me to see over them when taking a quick glance.
I included two different layouts in which I would use in my future
classroom. First, is the flexible seating layout. This is where I would provide
multiple different seating options for students. This encourages student
movement and increases student learning overall. This layout encourages
collaboration and partner work, as well as giving those opportunities for
learners to choose where they learn best.
The second layout I included is table groups or clusters. In my
classroom, I plan on doing many activities using collaboration and
teamwork. If there are desks, we can push them together like shown above
into these clusters. Otherwise, we can use tables in the same way. If we
use tables, there will be three-drawer bins with students corresponding
numbers to keep textbooks and other supplies. These will be set next to the
tables.
Near the front of the room I would like an open space. This space
would be for me to teach in (near the board), and for students to come up
and sit together for whole group lessons. This also provides flexibility in
doing different movement activities and whole group activities together,
without the separation of tables.
Wherever there may be room, I would include a bookshelf with
different levels of reading books organized by genre. Depending on how
large the room is and number of students, these type of things (such as the
library and calm corner) will have to be arranged accordingly.
Classroom Management Plan
Firstmost and overall, the number one priority in my classroom is that
all students feel respected, cared for, loved, and heard. Everything in the
classroom management plan falls under these categories.
Respect will be a large component in my classroom. Respect for
others, respect for yourself, respect for our learning, and respect for our
school. These will be discussed and agreed upon on the first day of school.
Music and push lights will be used as a noise level indicator. These
will help students self-regulate voice levels and be given a chance to
correct.
Call and responses will be used to refocus attention and encourage
classroom engagement.
Consequences are as follows:
1. Eye contact, hand signal
2. Verbal warning
3. Student will be removed from the situation and will be asked to take
time to recompress before joining again. I will have a short discussion
with the student about their behavior and review expectations.
4. If behavior continues, student will be sent to principal's office and
parents will be contacted.
Positive Reinforcement:
We will have an incentive jar for the whole class. Anytime I see a
student going above and beyond expectations, we will add to the incentive
jar.
Positive parent mail:
Students will receive a note at the end of the day to send home with
them, noting something positive I have seen that student do or say that day.
Classroom Engagement:
The ‘Big Eight’ Engagement skills will be used. These include:
Expectations, attention prompts, proximity, cueing, signals, time limits,
tasking, and voice.
Philosophy of Classroom Management
I believe the classroom needs to be a safe, caring, respectful learning
environment. Classroom management does not exist without mutual
respect and understanding. Building relationships with both students and
parents encourages a positive classroom environment, and being genuine
in asking how students are everyday creates a caring, respectful area in
which students can grow.
Creating this space is not a one time occurrence, it is needed to be
exemplified everyday to give students a sense of consistency and a safe
space to learn. By teaching students in an environment such as this, I
believe learners will be more comfortable taking risks, be more open about
their feelings and thoughts, and overall create more understanding and
empathy within the classroom.
A class is only managed effectively if I make an effort to really know
both students and parents. This way, I am able to contact home if I am
having a problem with a student and have open communication with the
parents or guardians. In the same way, I am able to have conversations
with parents when I notice something positive about the student during
school I would like to mention to them.
All of these areas I believe build student success in the classroom.
Building the areas to create an environment in which students can learn
and grow best.
