Lesson Plan in Physical Science
Content Standard:
The learners demonstrate understanding of how the uses of different materials are related to their
properties and structures.
Performance Standard:
The learners make a list of polar and non-polar products at home and their practical uses.
I. OBJECTIVE
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
a. identify if a molecule is polar or nonpolar
b. determine the polarity of chemical bonds between atoms using the concept of electronegativity.

B. Lesson Proper : Discussion
Electronegativity is a chemical property that describes the tendency of an atom or a
functional group to attract electrons toward itself..
Polar covalent bonds result when electrons are unequally shared between atoms,
while nonpolar covalent bonds result when electrons are more equally shared between
atoms. The unequal sharing of electrons is due to the differences in the electronegativities of
the two atoms sharing the electrons.
D. Analysis Questions:
How will you relate the electronegativity difference to the molecular bond polarity?
IV. Abstraction:
The polarity of a bond arises from the relative electronegativities of the elements.
Electronegativity is the tendency of an atom of an element to attract electrons
toward itself when it is part of a compound.
V. Application :
Like dissolves like. Acetone dissolves nail polish. Water dissolves dirt.
VI. Assessment
Given the following molecules. Identify the polarity of bonds, the molecular
