Introduction
Overview
Streaming files can be used to present three-dimensional data in various Microsoft products, such as
Word, PowerPoint, and Internet Explorer.
Visualisations such as real-time rotation and zooming are possible with the streaming file embedded into
one of these products.
Requirements
Prior to proceeding with this tutorial, you will need:
• Surpac v6.1 or later installed, and
• The dataset to be used for visualisation.

Note: This workflow demonstrates the steps in this tutorial. There are other ways to achieve a result.

Task: Set the Work Directory (Windows XP)
1. In the Navigator, right-click the streaming_files folder.
2. On the popup menu, select Set as work directory.
The name of the work directory is displayed in the title bar at the top of the Surpac window.

DTMs and string files are displayed.

1. Choose File > Save to Stream Control.
2. Enter the information as shown, and then click Apply.
Note: Two files are created in the working directory design.hsf and design.html

• From Windows Explorer, double-click on the filename to open the file design.html.
Task: Install the Driver
If you have not previously viewed any hsf files on your computer, you will be prompted to install the
driver using the form below.
• Click Install.
Note: Depending on the speed of your modem, it may take a while to download and install the driver
software.
Task: View the Data
When the driver installation is complete, the data will display in Internet Explorer.
1. Click and drag in the viewport to spin the data in three dimensions.

2. Right-click anywhere on the image, and a popup menu is displayed:
3. Select Zoom, and then click and drag in the viewport to zoom the data.
Some options, such as the Shadow, are a toggle function.
The Window Color option will allow you to set different background colours for the upper and lower
halves of the viewport.

1. Open a new or existing Word document.
2. Position the cursor where you want the file embedded.
3. Click the Microsoft Office button, and then click Word Options.
4. Click Trust Centre, click Trust Centre Settings, and then click ActiveX Settings.
5. Complete the form as shown, and then click OK.
6. Click OK.
After you have enabled the controls in Microsoft Office, follow these steps to insert the streaming file.
1. Click the Microsoft Office button, and then click Word Options.
2. In the Word Options, click Popular.

3. Tick the Show Developer tab in the Ribbon check box, and then click OK.
Note: In Word, you will see an additional tab called Developer, next to the View tab.
4. Click on the Developer tab.
5. In the Controls tab, click the Legacy Tools icon, and then click on the More Controls icon.
6. On the form displayed, select GEMCOM Software Stream Control, and then click OK.
Note: A draw box will be displayed in your Word document.

7. Click on the draw box in Word, resize by clicking the box, right-click and then choose Gemcom
Software Stream Control Object > Properties.
8. Browse for your *.hsf file, tick the option Embed, and then click OK.
Note: Microsoft Visual Basic will start automatically.
9. Choose Run or press F5.
10. Close Microsoft Visual Basic

1. Open an existing document, or create a new Powerpoint document.
2. Click the Microsoft Office button, and then click Powerpoint Options.
3. Click Trust Centre.
4. Click Trust Centre Settings, and then click ActiveX Settings.

6. Click OK.

7. Left-click and drag the pointer to draw a shape in your presentation.

9. Right-click and then choose Gemcom Software Stream Control Object > Properties.
