Tutorial Sheet 4
1. The critical angle of light in certain material is found to be 60o. What should be the polarising
angle for that material?
2. The polarization angle for a transparent glass piece for red light is 60o. What would be the angle
of minimum deviation for a 45o prism made of that same transparent glass.
3. If refractive index of water and glass is 1.33 and 1.54 respectively, which beam of light (1)
entering from water to glass or (2) from glass to water will exhibit high polarising angle?
4. If an unpolarized light falls on two polarising sheets placed next to each other, what must be
the angle between their characteristic directions such that the intensity of transmitted light is
only one-third of the intensity of the incident beam.
5. If plane of vibration of incident beam makes 60o angle with optic axis, compare the intensity of
ordinary and extraordinary light.
6. A left circularly polarized beam of wavelength λ = 5893 Å incidents normally on a calcite
crystal with its optic axis cut parallel to the surface of thickness 5.151 m. What will be the
state of polarization of the emergent beam?
7. Two Nicols are placed crossed to each other. If one of them is rotated by 60 o, then what
percentage of incident unpolarized light will pass through the setup.
8. A phase retardation plate of quartz has thickness of 0.1436 mm. For what wavelength in visible
region (450 to 800 nm), it will act as (i) quarter wave plate and (ii) half wave plate? Given µO
= 1.5443 and µE = 1.5533.
9. What is the condition for getting circular and elliptically polarized light waves in doubly
refracting materials? How to convert left elliptically polarized light into right elliptically
polarized light?
10. Identify the polarization state of plane wave propagation given by E(z,t) = 5 cos (2 109t +z)
𝑎̂𝑥 + 3 cos (2 109t +z -/2) 𝑎̂𝑦 .
11. A certain length of 5% solution causes the optical rotation of 20o. How much length of 10%
solution will cause 35o rotation.
12. The specific rotation of quartz for beam of wavelength 5086 Å is found to be 29.73 deg/mm.
Calculate the differences in refractive indices for right and left-handed circularly polarized light.
13. Calculate the phase retardation in beam of λ = 5000 Å when pass through the quartz plate of
thickness 0.032 mm. Given µO = 1.5418 and µE = 1.5508.
14. A polariser and an analyser are oriented so that amount of light transmitted is maximum. How
will you orient the analyser so that the transmitted light is reduced to (a) 0.5, (b) 0.25, (c) 0.75,
(d) 0.125 and (e) zero of its maximum value.
15. Two polarizing sheets are initially adjusted in the crossed position so that the intensity of the
transmitted light is zero. What angle the analysing sheet must be rotated so that the intensity of
transmitted light is two-third of the maximum intensity obtained in the parallel position.
