Hydrow I Hydraulic
Production Packer
The Weatherford Hydrow I is a high-pressure, double-grip, retrievable hydraulic-
set production packer.
The Hydrow I is released by the straight pull of the tubing string. It features a
patented upper-slip releasing system that reduces the strain required to release
the slips. Dislocating a key non-directional slip first triggers an automatic release
of the other slips.
Features
• Patented upper-slip releasing system
• Tension force to release packer easily adjusted before running
• All components locked to prevent pre-set
• Release shear pins not affected by differential pressures
• Tension force to release the packer is easily adjusted in the field
Benefits
• Straight pull release
• Balance system offsets pressure reversals
• Mechanical upper slips
• Can be converted to selective set
Applications
• Offshore oil and gas completions
• Highly deviated wells and doglegs
• Stacked packer completions
• Coiled tubing completions

SETTING PROCEDURE
The Weatherford Hydrow I packer is set by temporarily plugging the tubing below the packer and applying pressure to
the tubing string. The tubing may be plugged by dropping a ball to seat in an expendable-seating sub run below the
packer or by running a wireline plug to seat in a profile nipple or sliding sleeve run below the packer.
In installations where the Hydrow I packers are run in tandem, one temporary plug run below the bottom packer is all
that is required to set the packers. Pressuring the tubing will set all the packers simultaneously, or by adjusting the
setting shear values of each packer, the packers can be set individually.
After the packer is run to setting depth the well is flanged up and the tubing is displaced, the tubing is plugged as
mentioned above. Pressure up on the tubing (see chart below), [adjust shear screws (43)] above annulus hydrostatic
pressure at the packer and hold the pressure for ten (10) minutes. The packer should now be fully set and can be
pressure tested if desired.
To test each packer individually, a sliding sleeve should be run between each packer. The lower packer is set and
tested down the casing. Then the second packer is set, the sliding sleeve below the packer is opened, and the
second packer is tested down the casing. Additional packers can be set and tested in the same manner.
NOTE: A maximum running speed of one 90 ft. stand in 60 seconds is recommended for this packer.
RELEASING PROCEDURE
The Weatherford Hydrow I packer is released by straight pickup. Tension force required to release the packer is
easily adjusted prior to running in depending on the requirements. These requirements are determined by any
expected tubing shrinkage due to temperature change, and differential pressures across the packer during releasing.
(See parts list for release shear screw values.)

OPERATION
When tubing pressure is applied to the packer, the inlet port allows a pressure differential to be present in the setting
chamber. This differential moves the setting piston down, shearing the setting screws, freeing the collet and setting
the lower slips. The cylinder connection is forced up, which closes the valve, sets the upper slips and packs off the
elements. Any relative motion between the locking nut housing and the setting piston is held in place by the locking
nut, which will ratchet in only one direction. With the packer set, tubing elongation or set down weight is transferred
through the outer components of the packer and is supported by the lower slips. If any additional rubber compression
occurs due to the weight and/or pressure, the upper slips move down to take up the extra compression.
If the tubing contracts or tension is pulled, the force transfers through the outer components of the packer and is
supported by the upper slips. If any additional rubber compression occurs due to the tension, the lower slips move up
to take up the extra compression. With a pressure differential across the packer from above, the compensating piston
is forced down keeping the valve closed. If the pressure is from below, the compensating piston is forced up against
the upper cone, which transmits the force directly to the upper slips and keeps the tool from moving. Pressure from
below also acts on the valve insert to keep the valve closed. A straight pull on the mandrel strong enough to
overcome the combined forces of pressure (if any) and the release screws will shear the screws and allow upward
travel of the mandrel. The valve split ring will pick up on the valve insert and open the valve, allowing pressure
equalization. Continued upward travel will compress the follower spring until it is solid. The top cap will then pick up
the spring cage and the upper slip body, releasing the upper slips. Once the upper slips are released, the elements
relax, the lower slip assembly falls down against the bottom sub and the packer can be removed from the well.

EXAMPLE: Well conditions indicate that when releasing a 7” x 3-1/2” packer on 3-1/2” tubing, a differential of 3,000
PSI will be present from above the packer on the casing side. How much tension is required to release the packer?
From the chart, there is a 2.63 in2 down force acting on the mandrel. Multiply 3,000 PSI x 2.63 in.2 = 7,890 lb. force
down on the mandrel. Each shear screw is brass and is rated at 6,200 lb. shear (See parts list). Therefore, if the
packer were equipped with the maximum amount of shear (37,200 lb.), total tension to release the packer would be
45,090 lb. at the tool. (7,890 lb. + 37,200 lb. = 45,090 lb.)

PRO-LOC MECHANISM
When differential pressure induces a greater force below the packer than the setting force, this packer’s PRO-LOC
MECHANISM locks in a tighter set directly proportional to the additional force, and repeats each time a greater force
is induced.
The Hydrow I-S is set by temporarily plugging the tubing below the packer and applying pressure to the tubing string.
The tubing may be plugged by setting a wireline blanking plug inside a profile-seating nipple below the packer. The
applied tubing pressure into the setting ports (B & D) shears the shear screws (19, 36, & 41) at the same time at a
predetermined shear value of approximately 925-PSI. Continuing to pressure moves the upper cone (12) upward
setting the upper slips (10); moving the load body (42), cylinder (33), lock nut (31), and lower cone (43) downward
thereby setting the lower slips (45). This moves the lock sleeve (34) and lower retainer (30) upward, thereby
compressing the packing elements (23, 25, & 27). The lock nut (31) and lock sleeve (34) does not allow retraction of
the elements (23, 25, & 27), upper slips (10) or lower slips (45), but locks them in their set position.
PERFORMANCE – 745-13A-001
Differential pressure from above acts downward on the elements (23, 25, & 27) in their set position against the casing
wall, transmitting force into the lower retainer (30), through the lock sleeve (34), lock nut (31), cylinder (33), dogs (40),
load body (42), lower cone (43), lower slips (45), and into the casing wall. Differential pressure from below acts
upward on the elements (23, 25, & 27), transmitting a force through the upper cone (12), upper slips (10) and into the
casing wall.
When differential pressure from below is sufficient to induce a greater force against the elements (23, 25, & 27) than
the original setting force induced during the setting procedure, the “Pro-Loc. Mechanism” captures this force by
locking it in with its lock nut (31). The result is a tighter set than its original set, and should insure longer packer life;
due to its elements (23, 25, & 27) having minimum slack when high differential pressure cycles across the packer.

Revision 1.3
RELEASE PROCEDURE
The Hydrow I-S Packer is released by predetermined tension of the packer’s mandrel (2) of approximately 99,000 lbs.
above the weight of the tubing string. This force shears the release screws (50) and is adjustable by simply removing
screws. In severe applications where debris buildup may be above the packer, pressurizing the annulus or circulating
during equalization can reduce the tension required to retrieve the packer.
RELEASE SEQUENCE
Tension is applied to the tubing string. The split ring (52) acts upward against L ring (51) and shears release screws
(50). The L ring (51) bumps lower end of slip housing (47), and the lower split ring (52) falls away from mandrel (2)
and is retained inside bottom cap (53). The mandrel’s (2) upper port moves above the o-ring (11), and providing
differential pressure is present, initiates equalization and the possible removal of scale, or other debris from the upper
slip (10) area which are still set. The mandrel’s (2) shoulder (E) continues to move upward, out from under dogs
(40), picks up the load body (42) and lower cone (43), shears the release screws (39), and releases the lower slips
(45), allowing the entire lower slip assembly to fall until it rests on the upper shoulder of the bottom coupling (54). At
the same time, freeing the cylinder (33) to fall along with the lock nut (31), lock sleeve (34) and the lower retainer (30),
allowing the packing elements (23, 25, & 27) to relax. This tension shears the shear screw (6) on the mandrel (2)
which allows the shear ring (5) to bump and pickup the top cap (4), pulling the upper slip housing (8), which retracts
the upper slips (10) from the casing wall and upper cone (12). The packer can now be retrieved from the well bore.
NOTE: An additional step during the releasing sequence of the packer may be necessary. If the packer did not
release normally, and enough time has been allowed to equalize pressure, pressurizing the annulus or circulating
should help remove debris from the upper slip (10) area, and further relax the elements (23, 25, & 27). The packer
should now release normally for retrieval.

EXAMPLE: The 13-3/8” x 7” Hydrow I-S is run in the well on 5-1/2” tubing. At 5,000 ft. in casing is full with 10
lb./gal. (.520 PSI/FT.) and the tubing is full with 8.34 lb./gal. (.4335 PSI/FT.) thus creating a differential of 432 PSI
from above. The packer is dressed with 69,300-lb. shear release. How much tension is required to release the
packer? Answer: 430 PSI x 19.2 in2 = 8,256 lb. Down + 69,300 lb. shear = 77,556 lb. total tension required to
release the packer.

PERFORMANCE – 745-13B-000
Differential pressure from above acts downward on the elements (22 & 24) in their set position against the
casing wall, transmitting force into the lower retainer (26), through the lock sleeve (29) lock nut (27), cylinder (30),
dogs (37), load body (35), lower cone (39), lower slips (41) and into the casing wall. Differential pressure from
below acts upward on the elements (22 & 24) transmitting a force through the upper cone (11), upper slips
(9), and into the casing wall.
When differential pressure from below is sufficient to induce a greater force against the elements (22 & 24) than the
original setting force induced during the setting procedure, the “Pro-Loc. Mechanism” captures this force by
locking it in with the lock nut ((27). The result is a tighter set than its original set, and should insure longer packer
life; due to its elements (22 & 24) having minimum slack when high differential pressure cycles across the packer.

RELEASE PROCEDURE
The Hydrow I-S Packer is released by predetermined tension of the packer’s mandrel (2) of approximately
69,000 lb. above the weight of the tubing string. This force shears the release screws (47) and is adjustable by
simply removing screws. In severe applications where debris buildup may be above the packer, pressurizing the
annulus or circulating during equalization can reduce the tension required to retrieve the packer.
RELEASE SEQUENCE
Tension is applied to the tubing string. The split ring (48) acts upward against L ring (45) and shears release
screws (47). The L ring (45) bumps lower end of slip housing (43) and the lower split ring (48) falls away from
mandrel (2) and is retained inside bottom cap (49). The mandrel’s upper port moves above the o-ring (10) and
providing differential pressure is present, initiates equalization and the possible removal of scale or other debris from
the upper slip (9) area which are still set. The mandrel’s (2) shoulder continues to move upward, out from under
dogs (37), picks up the load body (35) and lower cone (39), shears the release screws (36) and releases the lower
slips (41). This allows the entire lower slip assembly to fall until it rests on the upper shoulder of the bottom coupling
(50). At the same time, freeing the cylinder (30) to fall along with the lock nut (27), lock sleeve (29), and the lower
retainer (26), allowing the packing elements (22 & 24) to relax. This tension shears the shear screw (6) on the
mandrel (2) which allows the shear ring (5) to bump and pickup the top cap (4), pulling the upper slip housing (7).
This retracts the upper slips (9) from the casing wall and upper cone (11). The packer can now be retrieved from
the well bore. NOTE: An additional step during the releasing sequence of the packer may be necessary. If
the packer did not release normally, and enough time has been allowed to equalize pressure, pressurizing the
annulus or circulating should help remove debris from the upper slip (9) area. The packer should now release
normally for retrieval.
