BACKGROUND INFORMATION
A vape, also known as an electric cigarette, is a gadget that heats up a liquid to create a vapor
you breathe in. It consists of an atomizer, a power source such as a battery, and a compartment
like a cartridge or tank. Vaping can help some people quit smoking and it’s known to be safer
but people also forget the side effects or negative impact vaping causes such as: dry mouth,
dizziness, nosebleeds, dry eyes and itchiness. We will be studying the aspect of positive and
negative effects of vaping on students.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
What are the positive and negative effects of vaping on students?
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
● To find out why students vape.

● To investigate the positive and negative effects of vaping on students

METHODOLODY
The method of investigation used by the researcher to conduct research on the causes and effects
vaping on an individual’s respiratory system was a questionnaire. A questionnaire is defined
as a set of written/ printed questions with choice of answers, devised for the purpose of a survey/
statistical study. The reason for the incorporation of this method is:
1. It has the potential to have a high response rate while addressing a huge number of
pressing problems and queries.
2. They provide respondents time to thoroughly examine their answers without interruption
from, say, an interviewer.
The researcher chose to collect relevant information for this task by distributing a questionnaire
containing fifteen (15) close ended questions, the researchers decided to use a questionnaire as
research tool simply because; it is an inexpensive means of gathering large amounts of data from
sizeable samples, it puts less pressure on respondents, its possible to ask uniform set of questions
and, it also provides an easy analysis and visualization. It was decided that 15 individuals would
receive questionnaires. The questionnaires were distributed by a process of random selection.
This was done by gathering 15 persons in a room and allowing them to answer.
Additionally, the15 questionnaires were distributed on the 15 th of October by hand to the target
audience. Questionnaires were distributed to 7 males and 8 females of the age range 13-19.
Disadvantages of this method of data collection include:
1. The majority of tasks encountered while conducting the research were straightforward.
However, they found creating the questions for their questionnaire to be a particularly
difficult assignment. They had a difficult time coming up with enough inquiries to enable
them to complete their statistics. They were able to get through this obstacle with the
assistance of their teacher and as a result, they were able to develop inquiries that closely
matched the demands of their objectives.
PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS OF DATA

Figure 1: Bar graph representing the reasons why students vape.

Why do you think students vape?

The bar graph above in figure 1 represents the reasons why individuals think students vape, 30%
of the respondents chose the option stating that students vape because of stress and peer pressure
while, 40% responded that students may vape because of depression.
Figure 2. Pie Chart showing whether vaping has positive or negative effects on students.
Do you think vaping has negative or positive effects on a person?

The pie chart above in figure one shows that 50% of students think vaping has negative
effects, 10% saying positive effects and 40% choosing both negative and positive effects.
ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

In figure 1, the bar graph represents reasons why individuals think students vape. 40% of the
respondents favored depression as the main cause. Nicotine interrupts the cerebral dopamine
pathway leading to an increase in depressive symptoms. Because nicotine results in an increase
in the chemical dopamine, your body learns to make less of it on its own. With lower levels of
dopamine, your depression symptoms will likely feel even more pronounced. According to
Truth’s Initiative Continuous tracking survey, 47% of young people who quit vaping feel more
in control than when they were vaping, and 90% feel less stressed, anxious or depressed. Leading
up to 30% of respondents to choose “stress” and “peer pressure” as their least favored options as
to why students vape. Nicotine also increases sensitivity to stress and alters the coping
mechanism in the brain. Vaping nicotine can create feelings of pleasure and relaxation which
provides a distraction from stressful situations.
The pie chart above in figure three shows the responses to the question asked, “Do you think
vaping has positive or negative effects on a person?” 50% of the participants think vaping has
negative effects. In addition to your lungs, nicotine and other substances in e-liquid can hurt your
heart and brain. We know nicotine can hurt brain development, raise your blood pressure and
narrow your arteries. According to “My Cleveland clinic” EVALI is a serious lung condition that
vaping causes. 10% said the option “positive effects” and 40% participants chose both negative
and positive effects. Vaping can help some people quit smoking. It is usually cheaper than
smoking. Vaping is not harmless, but it is much less harmful than smoking.

CONCLUSION
Factors such as peer pressure, depression and stress are the main reasons as to why students
vape. Without a vaping pen, students cannot operate normally for at least 24 hours without
experiencing headaches, anxiety, or restlessness. Students that vape experience several negative
impacts and find it challenging to withdraw from it.

RECOMMENDATIONS
The researcher believe that because this is a significant issue that requires more awareness,
students who are currently struggling with withdrawal from vaping should confide in a family
member, friend, or call a rehabilitation clinic and seek the assistance they require.
Another recommendation is for schools to educate their students on the dangers of vaping. This
can be done through assemblies, classroom presentations, or even just one-on-one conversations.
It is important that students understand the risks associated with vaping so that they can make
informed decisions about whether or not to vape.

REFLECTION
This investigation assisted in learning about the negative effects of vaping and the impacts
students face when trying to desist from vaping. It was learnt that vape pens contain nicotine
which is very toxic and it causes heart attacks. It is now comprehendible as to why students turn
to vaping especially when they are stressed. However, it is not a recommended thing to do and as
a result, the researcher would never vape and would encourage others to desist from vaping.
This project could have been improved if there were a larger scale of students participating in the
survey so that better information could’ve been obtained.
The social impact of vaping is causing an epidemic of nicotine addiction in teens. Since vape
companies target their products to young people, vaping can lead teenagers and young adults to
develop a nicotine addiction. Regular nicotine exposure can weaken a young person's memory
and ability to concentrate.
The economic impact costs the world's economies annually in healthcare expenditure and lost
productivity. Billions being spent in healthcare, lost productivity from smoking-related illnesses
and health conditions. If vaping continues, this will take a toll on students since they will be
exposed and their inquisitiveness will build and that will result in them spending their allowances
to purchase vapes.
