Company Profile:

San Miguel Brewery Inc. (SMB) is the largest producer of beer in the Philippines, with
nine out of ten beer drinkers preferring its brands. San Miguel Beer was first produced by La
Fabrica de Cerveza de San Miguel, an upstart brewery in the heart of Manila that began its
operations in 1890. It received the Royal Grant from the Spanish king to brew beer in the
Philippines. Then a colony of Spain in 1963, the brewery was renamed San Miguel Corp. (SMC)
to reflect its growing ventures into food and packaging. As the beer business grew at a steady
pace, it provided the foundation from which SMC expanded its interests from food, beverage and
packaging, to power, oil, airline and infrastructure. Today, SMC is the country's biggest
diversified conglomerate.

From a single product produced in a single brewery in 1890, SMB has developed an array
of popular beer products over the past century, catering to the distinct tastes and preferences of
beer drinkers across all segments and markets in the Philippines. Today, it carries a portfolio of
ten strong and popular beer brands: San Mig Light, Red Horse Beer, Cerveza Negra, Gold Eagle
Beer, San Miguel Strong Ice, San Miguel Super Dry, San Miguel Premium All-Malt Beer, San
Miguel Flavored Beer, San Mig Zero, and its flagship brand, San Miguel Pale Pilsen. These
products carry distinct attributes that cater to all segments of the Philippine beer market and have
earned international recognition for quality, winning in the prestigious Monde International
Selection almost on an annual basis, among other awards and citations. San Miguel Beer
products have consistently dominated the market for beer in the Philippines, the country's largest
alcoholic beverage segment. Despite its dominant market position, SMB continues to find new
ways to grow further its volumes and its market share in the Philippine beverage industry.

• Implementation of Total Quality Management. In order to reduce the errors in
manufacturing the products, San Miguel Brewery Inc. made used of TQM to improve
their outputs through the enhancement of procedures inside the production
department. SMB also wants to ensure that all their employees are doing their
assigned jobs in order to achieve the goal they set for the success of the business.
Hence, increased in productivity, customer satisfaction and strong competitive
position are some of the results happened after implementing it.
• Customization of Customer Care Center. By setting this up, San Miguel Brewery Inc.
wants to establish a more personal communication link with its customers. This center
is a channel which is very accessible for all potential buyers for them to make
requests and suggestions for the improvement of the products quality. Moreover, it is
also being operated by one of their professional staff through the use of technology to
employ solutions to capture customers’ loyalty and satisfaction.

Operation and Environmental Dimension of CSR:


Enshrined from our mother company, San Miguel Corporation's Corporate Policy on the
Environment, “SMB is committed to the protection, preservation and enhancement of the
environment, actively contributing towards a clean and healthy environment for the well-being of
its employees, consumers, and communities where it operates.”
In creating an environment sharing, SMB comply with the policy on environment and
environment management system. Under this are solid waste segregation, energy and water
conservation, reuse, reduce, recycle and scrap selling.
Here are the programs of SMB for caring the environment:

Since 2010, SMB has been conducting nationwide “Trees Brew Life” project under its flagship
‘Buhayin and Kalikasan’ environmental program in hopes in ensuring the availability of water
supply across the country.

SMB Mandaue conducts clearing operation with cooperation with the city government to reclog
major waterways with its host community in Tipolo to manage waste buildup to prevent potential
calamities in the city flood prone areas.
Putting surplus to good use, SMB’s Mindanao operations reach out to various organization
within its host communities to detonate and repurpose discarded materials to beautify offices,
schools and public spaces.

SMB has donated equipment such as waste shredders to local units to support the government’s
environmental efforts through Solid Waste Management.

Operations and Stakeholder Dimension of CSR:


Partnership with the Government. In pursuit of common objectives, SMB partners with the
government in its various social development projects and other relevant undertakings
redounding to countryside development.
Partnership with NGOs and the Private Sector. SMB collaborates with non-government
organizations (NGOs) and the business community in espousing synergy through joint initiatives
to expand its beneficiary-reach. .
In addition, SMB also follows the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP). San Miguel
Beer Division began implementing an international standards for food and safety insurance.
Adapting HACCP involved risk assessment of raw materials, process operations, equipment and
machineries. SMB were strictly comply with the Current Good Manufacturing Practices
(CGMP) and ISO Standards by providing high quality products uplifting the lives of their
stakeholders. They also provided proper trainings to their employees to create good work and
have a knowledge in providing good service to their customers. And to fully implement their
CSR.

In every businesses, if there are strengths, there are also weaknesses or the downsides. In
terms of employees working experiences, weaknesses of SMB comes out. According to SMB's
current and former employees, SMB gives limited holidays, non-overtime pay, workers are
assigned in stressful and some are in critical areas, too multi-tasking activities, work during
holidays, many of the employees has no career development and last is the long hours of work.
Employees of SMB are being overworked and don't have work life balance. SMB should also
priorities their employees. SMB should give them the right hours of work, overtime pays, safety
and not stressful workplace and all of them must be given equal career development. Each
employees should first meet their basic needs for them to work-well.
