LEC (1) Introduction To Deep Foundations

This document discusses an introduction to deep foundations, including their definition as foundations that transfer loads farther below the surface than shallow foundations. It describes their uses for skyscrapers, large loads, poor shallow soil, and site constraints. It also outlines different types of deep foundations like piles, piers, drilled shafts, and caissons.

AN INTRODUCTION TO
DEEP FOUNDATIONS

Foundation Engineering II (CE422)

Lecture (1): An Introduction to Deep Foundation Mr. Hamza Makeen

Lecture (1)
An Introduction to Deep Foundation

1.1 Definition of deep foundation:

- A deep foundation is a type of foundation

that transfers building loads to the earth

farther down from the surface than a shallow

foundation does to a subsurface layer or a

range of depths.

1.2 Uses of deep foundations:

- There are many reasons that a geotechnical

engineer would recommend a deep foundation

over a shallow foundation, such as:

1. Skyscraper.

2. Very large design loads.

3. Poor soil at shallow depth, or site

constraints like property line.

4. Other.

1.3 Types of Deep Foundations

- There are different terms used to describe

different types of deep foundations

including the pile (which is analogous to a

pole), the pier (which is analogous to a

column), drilled shafts, and caissons.

3
Lecture (1): An Introduction to Deep Foundation Mr. Hamza Makeen

- Piles are generally driven into the ground

in situ; other deep foundations are

typically put in place using excavation and

drilling.

- The naming conventions may vary between

engineering disciplines and firms.

- Deep foundations can be made out of Timber,

Steel, Reinforced Concrete or Prestressed

Concrete.
