RM-Module2 Report

The document discusses literature review and technical reading which are important for research. It explains that literature review helps identify problems and shows how the planned research contributes something new. It also discusses that new knowledge must be understood in the context of existing knowledge, which comes from textbooks as older established knowledge and research papers as newer work.

Literature Review and Technical

Reading, Attributions and Citations
Literature review and technical reading are fundamental components of research that lay
the groundwork for new discoveries and advancements. As researchers embark on the
quest for new and existing knowledge, effective search strategies become paramount for
accessing relevant information from diverse sources.

“The primary goal of a literature review is to know the use of content/ideas/approaches

in the literature to correctly identify the problem .”

It also helps the researcher understand clearly that the research to be undertaken would
contribute something new and innovative.

New & Existing Knowledge

New knowledge in research can only be interpreted within the context of what is already
known, and cannot exist without the foundation of existing knowledge.

The new knowledge can have different interpretations depending on:

• What the researcher’s background
• One’s perception of that new knowledge can change from indifference to excitement
• Depending on what else one knows.

The existing knowledge is needed to make the case that there is a problem and that it is
important.

Where does the existing knowledge come from?

There are mainly two source where we can get the existing knowledge which are as
follows:

1. Text Book :
“Older established knowledge” - Provide the established knowledge and the
background to be able to read the newer work usually recorded in the research
papers.

2. Research Paper :
“Newer Work”- Goal is normally to present a small piece of new knowledge It
assumes that the reader already knows a lot in that field. Researcher going back
to other sources to try and interpret what is going on in a particular research
paper.
