Film Appreciation: 3 Idiots
Director producer Rajkumar Hirani’s film 3 Idiots is warm and humanist
indictment of India's rude-crude education system that prepares
humans for a rat race rather than thinkers for a new world. It is a tight
slap on ridiculous post-independence Indian education system.
The three idiots, Rancchoddas Shyamaldas Chanchad (Aamir Khan),
Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi) and Farhan Qureshi (R.Madhavan) got
selected into the elite engineering college only to get qualified for
jobs, except Rancho. Principal Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Boman Irani)
was no help at all. The story is basically about these idiots (except
Rancho) where their life revolves around parental pressure, societal
image, so called secured future. But they end up with making choices
that they were personally happy with, which in the society is not
common and appreciated unless it provides you a materialistic rich
life. In the end all the three idiots choose what they are passionate and
happy with and movie ends with happy ending.
The film circles around the dominant themes such as parental expectations,
student choices, teacher’s traditional attitudes towards learning, societal
influences on the student’s educational development, and creative learning
vis-a-vis rote learning. The most appreciable part of film is that the director
Rajkumar Hirani has kept the humour all through the movie along with life
lessons. For instance, ragging scene in the beginning of movie, the mournful
meal at Raju homes or the Chatur’s “balatkar” speech. But along with these
humorous elements, film also has emotional core. The Joy Lobo’s (Ali Fazal)
suicide due to rejection of project by “Virus” and Raju’s attempts to suicide
creates the deep emotional aspect of movie. One more appreciable part of
the movie was when Pia’s (Karena Kapoor) sister was supposed to go to
hospital for delivery but could not go due to heavy rain but the Rancho with
his friends help did the delivery using his self-made inverter.
I would like to say that the combination of comedy, emotions and
presentation of Indian education system which closely causes parental and
societal pressure is perfectly synced in the film. The Rancho’s dialogue that
Anand
urges us to run behind excellence and not for success is quite is really heart
touching. It gives me the real meaning of the success. Further the movie tells
us that we always try to think out of box. But the real question is that, does
the box exist? This is depicted in the beginning when the principal tells the
freshies about how scientists had spent millions of dollars to develop the pen
that can be used in space, instead of thinking about pencil. Also, in of the part
Rancho uses his “Virus” Inverter, car batteries and other local things to make
the child delivery possible. This incident focuses on the point that life is
unorganised and we should focus on continuous improvement and innovative
to face problems successfully and make our tomorrow better.
