DEFINITION OF PHYSICS: -
The word “Physics” comes from a Greek word “Physikos” meaning
“natural”.
“Physics is the branch of natural science which deals with the properties of matter
and energy along with the interaction between them.”
It is based on experimental observations and quantitative measurement of natural
phenomenon. (Process)
For examples i) Motion of planets around sun.
ii) Motion of bodies under the force of gravity etc.
IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICS IN DAILY LIFE: -
Physics is playing vital role in framing our life style. In modern world the
“Electric power which we use in our houses and industries, “Lasers” which are
widely used in medical science and metallurgy, Nuclear energy Automobile
technology, Radar technology etc. all are produced and based on the principles of
physics.
In our common life we use Radios, Tap records, computer, Television,
Refrigerators, Telephone, Cell-phones, Micro-wave ovens, Air condition Vacuum
cleaners, washing machines and other electronic appliances all are worked on the
basis of laws of physics.
In short there is hardly any field of our daily life where physics is not playing a
dominant role for the benefit of main kind in one way or the other.
BRANCHES OF PHYSICS: -
Some important branches of physics are given below.
i) MECHANICS: -
It deals with the motion of bodies with or without reference of force.
ii) ELECTRICITY: -
It deals with the phenomena and effects related to electric charges.
iii) ELECTROMAGNETISM: -
It deals with observations, principles, laws and methods related to electricity
and magnetism.
iv) SOLID STATE PHYSICS: -
It deals with the concerned structure and properties of solid substance.
v) ATOMIC PHYSICS: -
It deals with the concerned structure and properties of the atoms.
vi) NUCLEAR PHYSICS: -
It deals with the structure and properties and reactions of the nuclei of
atoms.
vii) ASTRO PHYSICS: -
It is concerned with the study of the astronomical bodies.
Some other branches of physics are, Plasma physics, Bio-Physics, Particle Physics,
Optics etc.
CONTRIBUTION OF MUSLIM AND PAKISTANI SCIENTISTS IN THE FIELD OF PHYSICS: -
i) ABU ALI HASSAN IBN-AL-HAITHAM (965 – 1039 A.D)
Ibn – al – Haitham was born at Basra, a historical city of Iraq in 965. He was a
great scholar of physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Astronomy and Medicine.
He wrote many books on various subjects. His great and famous book was “Kitab-
ul-Manzir”. In this book Ibn – al – Haitham discussed about the nature of light,
working of eye and optics.
He discovered the nature of light and told that it is kind of energy. He gave two
laws of reflection of light and invented a pin hole camera.
ii) YAQUB IBNE ISHAQ ALKINDI:-
Yaqub ibne ishaq alkindi was born in 800 A.D in Basra, a historical city of Iraq.
He was famous Arab philosopher.
He worked in the field of optics, sound and specially on reflection of light. He
discussed music on scientific point of view. He did considerable work on
geometrical optics and in the field of medicine. He also discussed the nature of
sound.
iii) ABU REHAN MUHAMMAD BIN AHMED AL – BERUNI:-
Al – Beruni was born in a small town Berun, in present Afghanistan in 973 A.D. He
was a great scholar of the golden age of Islam. He wrote more than one hundred
fifty books on various subjects such as Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Biology,
History, Culture and civilization and Religious.
In his famous book “Qanoon – Almasoodi” He discussed motion of the Earth, the
shape of the earth, the moment of the Moon and the other plants planets known
in those days.
He proved that the Earth is round not flats also he measured the circumference of
the Earth. He determined the densities of various metals.
iv) PAKISTAN SCIENTISTS DR. ABDUS SALAM:-
He was born in Thang, a small city of Pakistan in 1926. He received his college
education from government college Lahore. On the basis of his excellent results he
was awarded Government scholarship for advance studies in U.K.
He came back to Pakistan in 1950 but he against went to U.K to continue his
research work.
He was awarded noble prize in Physics in 1979 for his work on Grand Unification
theory (GUT) he established. International centre for theoretical physics at Triests
Italy).
v) DR. ABDUL QADEER KHAN:-
Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan is our national hero he was born on 1 st April 1936 at Bhopal
in India and came to Pakistan in 1947.
He obtained his M. Sc Metallurgy degree from Holland. And Ph. D degree from the
university of Leaven Belgium. He worked as an expert at “Urenco Enrichment
Plant” in Holland.
In 1973 he returned to Pakistan to serve his motherland. He is expert in
Enrichment of Uranium 235 (U235) which is used in Nuclear reactors and in the
preparation of atomic bomb. He is funder of Nuclear programmed of Pakistan. Due
to his hard working and contribution, Pakistan became first “Islamic Nuclear state”
in the world in May 1998.
He has been awarded Hilal-i-Imtiaze” by.
