-Larghetto-
Larghetto is a musical term that means a piece should be played "slow, but not too slow." One of my favorite piano
pieces by Frédéric Chopin is his Nocturne in Bb Minor, Op. 9, No. 1, and it happens to be written for a larghetto tempo.
The nocturne begins with a complicated melody line that transitions to a owing middle section and ends with a
restatement of the opening melody with some variations.
This shawl begins with a complicated lace pattern, which is based on a stitch from the Vogue Knitting Stitchionary, vol.
5, ed. by Carla Scott. The design then transitions to a simpler lace pattern for the middle section before ending with a
restatement of the opening lace motif, much like Chopin’s Nocturne. I have very fond memories of learning this
nocturne during my freshman year of college, and I hope this shawl does justice to the elegance, emotion, and
warmth that’s embodied in the music.

NOTES
• Larghetto is worked at from the bottom up. The lacy edges have been staggered, so they look
symmetrical once nished.
• If you wish to adjust the width of your project, cast on a multiple of 18 + 16. For example, if you
want to work three repeats across, you would multiply like so: (18 x 3) + 16 = 70 stitches.

to advanced level.
