QUARTER 4 WEEK 1 DAY ____________________________________
GRADE/LEVEL 7 dd/mm/yyyy

TOPIC COORDINATE SYSTEM

1. Explain the importance of the coordinate system in locating places
LEARNING on Earth.
COMPETENCY 2. Demonstrate how places on Earth may be located using a
coordinate system.
IMPORTANT: Do not write anything on this material. Write your answers on a separate
sheet. Don’t forget to answer the Self-Learning Assessment Questions (SAQs).

UNDERSTAND
COORDINATE SYSTEM

What is coordinate system?

During the ancient times, locating places and identifying

directions depended largely on the observation of celestial
objects – the position of the different constellations, the rising and
setting of the sun, location of the stars and many more.
People invented system of navigation. They invented
imaginary lines to establish starting point in the globe.

What are these imaginary lines on the globe?

SAQ 1: Do you think these lines really exist on Earth? Why?

How do we express the location of a certain area on the map/globe?

Places on Earth may be located using a coordinate system.

Coordinate system is a set of numbers that shows where lines of latitude and
longitude meet.
The latitude and longitude are systems of geometrical coordinates used as bases in
identifying directions and locating places on Earth.
Two starting points are used in locating places and identifying directions on Earth.
The first is the equator, which passes horizontally through the center of the earth and the
prime meridian, the vertical line that divides the Earth into western and southern part.

Coordinate systems are needed to state the absolute location of a certain place or area
on Earth. It is often given in terms of latitude and longitude. For example, the Philippines
coordinate system is 21° N latitude and 121° E longitude.

SAQ 2: Why do you think people thought of using these imaginary lines on the
map or globe?

SAQ 3: What do you think is the purpose of the lines you can find on the map or on the
globe?

Let’s Practice! (Answer using the separate sheets provided.)

Excellent job! Let us check how much you have learned

today!
ACTIVITY 1
CONNECT THE DOTS

Directions: Locate the latitude and longitude on the

figure below. Place a dot at each latitude/longitude
coordinates on the graph. Then, draw lines to connect
the dots in order.
Note: When connecting the dots, start from the first dot that you have located. The
first dot is already done for you. After connecting the dots, an image will be formed.
What was the image formed?

6. 20ºN / 85ºW 12. 30ºN / 100ºW

Now place a yellow X at each coordinate below. Do not connect the X’s.

1. 45ºN / 140ºW 4. 40ºN / 80ºW

2. 35ºN / 135ºW 5. 45ºN / 70ºW
3. 45ºN / 130ºW 6. 35ºN / 65ºW
4.
Color the picture formed. You can choose your favorite color.

ACTIVITY 2
TARA NA! BYAHE NA TAYO SA PINAS!

Use the coordinates to plan a trip across the Philippines.

REMEMBER
Key Points

✓ COORDINATE SYSTEM is a way of locating points by labelling them with numbers

called coordinates. It is a set of numbers that shows where the latitude and longitude
meet.

✓ LATITUDE is an imaginary line on a map or globe that measures distance in degrees

north or south of the equator. It extends horizontally and are also called “parallels.”
✓ LONGITUDE is an imaginary line on a map or globe that measures distance in
degrees east or west of the prime meridian. It extends vertically. It is also called
“meridians.”
✓ EQUATOR is the imaginary line that divides the earth into half. It is at 0° latitude.
✓ PRIME MERIDIAN is the line that passes through Greenwich, England, and is used
as a reference point for measuring longitude east and west. It is at 0° longitude.
✓ The latitude and longitude are systems of geometrical coordinates used as bases in
identifying directions and locating places on Earth.
