1. R-22 refrigeration system of 11 TOR capacity operating between -10
o
C and 25 oC what is the percentage of reduction power requirement
two-stage expansion and flash-intercooler is used instead of one stage
expansion.
2. For the given R-12 vapor compression cycle. Pressure in the
evaporator 1.5 bar, in condenser 8 bar. Vapor leaves evaporator and
sub-cooler dry and saturated. Liquid is sub cooled to 20 oC and
compression is isentropic find the C.O.P of the system.

3. A cold storage plant requires a refrigerating capacity of 50 tons-ref at
0 oC evaporating temperature and 25 tons-ref at -30 oC evaporating
temperature. The condensing temperature is 37 oC. A single stage
ammonia system having two individual compressors is used. Find the
power, COP and condenser heat rejection.
If the described installation were to be refrigerated by one
compressor, find the power, COP and condenser heat rejection.
4. R-22 refrigeration plant consists of two evaporators, two stage
compression system, one condenser and a flash intercooler with
multiple expansion valves. The cycle pressures are: 1.0 bar, 3.0 bar
for evaporators and 10 bar for condenser. Cooling capacities of high
and low pressure evaporators are 15 and 30 tons-ref. Calculate power,
COP and condenser heat rejection.

5. A plate freezer is to be installed for freezing one ton of vegetables
from 15 oC to -30 oC per hour. The thermal properties of vegetables
are as follows: specific heat before freezing = 3.767 kJ/kg K, specific
heat after freezing = 1.88 kJ/kg K, latent heat of freezing = 301 kJ/kg
and freezing temperature = -1 oC. Assume the refrigeration losses
15%. Estimate the cooling capacity in tons-ref.
If the plate freezer is to be equipped with a two stage R-22 system
at an evaporating temperature -40 oC and condensing temperature
40 oC with flash intercooler with multiple expansion valve,
calculate the required power when the mechanical efficiency = 80
% and the actual COP.
6. A two-stage ammonia compressor has the following specifications:
for high stage number of cylinders = 4; for low stage number of
cylinders = 12; for all cylinders: bore = 100 mm and stroke = 100 mm,
speed 1450 rpm, volumetric efficiency = 76 % and mechanical
efficiency = 80%. If the compressor works between evaporating
temperature = -33 oC and condensing temperature = 47 oC, estimate
the amount of sub cooling in the intercooler, the cooling capacity in
tons-ref, the power required to drive the compressor in kW and the
actual COP.
7. For the following ammonia system condenser pressure is 16 bar. Sub-
cooler pressure 6 bar, evaporator pressure 3 bar, liquid temperature
drop through the sub-cooler 10 oC and through the heat exchanger 10
o
C. Calculate C.O.P.

8. A refrigerating plant serves cold store rooms for keeping butter and
similar foodstuffs with evaporator capacity 20 TOR at -10 oC, eggs 10
TOR at -6 oC, fruits and vegetables 30 TOR at 2 oC. The plant is
equipped with a compound ammonia compressor. The compressor has
3 stages in order to provide the different load. Assuming flash type
inter cooler between the stages. Estimate the power required for a 35
o
C condenser then calculate the C.O.P.
9. For the R-12 system shown evaporator 1 is 1.1 bar, evaporator 2 and
liquid sub-cooler is 3.2 bar and 8 bar condenser. Liquid is sub-cooled
10 oC through the heat exchanger and 10 oC through the liquid sub-
cooler. Vapor leaves the evaporator and liquid sub-cooler dry
saturated. Refrigerating capacity is 20 TOR for evaporator 1 and 10
TOR for evaporator 2, with isentropic compression. Calculate the
C.O.P.
