MOTORIZED FIRE DAMPER &

MOTORIZED FIRE & SMOKE DAMPER
Method Statement for Installation of Dampers, Silencers, Grilles, Diffusers and Louvers

Installation of Motorized Volume Control Dampers

The basic intent of a proper installation is to secure the volume control damper into the opening
in such a manner as to prevent distortion and disruption of damper operation.

Preparation:
Page 24 M-ANM-300000-CMAC-MST-000005_Rev A
• Check the schedules for proper damper locations within the building. Visually inspect
the damper for damage.
• Lift or handle damper using sleeve or frame. Do not lift damper using blades, linkage,
actuators, or jack-shafting. When handling multiple sections assemblies, use sufficient
support to evenly lift at each section mullion (see drawing). Do not drag, step on, apply
excessive bending, twisting, or racking.

Do not install screws in damper frame that will interfere with unexposed blade linkage
and prevent damper blades from opening and/or closing.
• Damper must be installed into duct or opening square and free of twist or other
misalignment. Damper must not be squeezed or stretched into duct or opening. Out of
square, racked, twisted or misaligned installations can cause excessive leakage and/or
torque requirements to exceed damper/actuator design.
• Damper and actuator must be kept clean, dry and protected from dirt, dust and other
foreign materials prior to and after installation. Examples of such foreign materials
include but are not limited to:
a) Mortar dust
b) Drywall dust
c) Fire-saving materials
d) Wall texture
e) Paint overspray

• Damper should be sufficiently covered as to prevent overspray if wall texturing or spray

painting will be performed within 5 feet (1.50m) of the damper. Excessive dirt or foreign
material deposits on damper can cause excessive leakage and/or torque requirements
to exceed damper/actuator design.
• ACCESS: Suitable access (actuators maintenance, etc.) must be provided for damper
inspection and servicing. Where it is not possible to achieve sufficient size access, it will
be necessary to install a removable section of duct.

Installation:
• Damper assemblies may require bracing to support the weight of the assembly and to
hold against system pressure. It is recommended to have appropriate bracing to support
the damper horizontally.
• Support ductwork in area of damper to prevent sagging due to damper weight. Cycle the
dampers by hand before installation to ensure freedom of movement.
Method Statement for Installation of Dampers, Silencers, Grilles, Diffusers and Louvers

• The damper sections must be attached together with #10 x ¾in. (19mm) max. Sheet
metal screws, ¼ in. (6mm) diameter nuts and bolts, tack or spot welds, or 3/16 in.
(4mm) diameter steel pop rivets.
Duct opening or opening Square should measure 1/4 inch (6mm) larger than damper
dimension and should be straight and level.
• If no holes are present in frame, drill 1/4 inch (6mm) diameter holes at 6 inch (52mm)
centers and fasten frames together with 1/4 inch (6mm) #20 (.03mm) bolts and nuts.
• Use shims between damper frame and duct opening or opening space to prevent
distortion of frame by fasteners holding it in place. Brace at every horizontal mullion and
vertically brace at every 8 feet of damper width for strength. Dampers in high velocity
(2000 fpm [610m per second]) mayPage 25 M-ANM-300000-CMAC-MST-000005_Rev A
require more bracing. Attachment, framing, mating
flanges, and anchoring of damper assemblies into openings, ductwork, or walls is the
responsibility of the installer.

If damper actuator is to be mounted out of the air stream, the extension pin should
extend approximately 4 inches (100mm) beyond the frame. On jack shafted units, the
jackshaft should extend through the jackshaft bearing assembly and approximately, 6
inches (152mm) beyond the frame.
• Individual damper sections, as well as entire multiple section assemblies must be
completely square and free from racking, twisting, or bending. Measure diagonally from
upper corners to opposite lower corners of each section. Damper blades, axles, and
linkage must operate without binding. Before system operation, cycle dampers open &
close.

MOTORIZED VOLUME CONTROL DAMPER

Installation of Mechanical Pressure Relief Dampers

FLUSH MOUNT
• Cut a hole in the duct the same size as the damper frame. 2-Slip the flanges on the
damper frame and secure the flanges to the duct using the 6 x 3/8'' sheet metal
screws provided. Keep the damper centered on the hole to prevent interfering with
the damper operation.
Method Statement for Installation of Dampers, Silencers, Grilles, Diffusers and Louvers

IN-LINE MOUNT
• Mount the face plate on the damper by means of the 10-32 x 1/4'' round head
machine screws supplied. Be sure that the bearing extending through the face
plate clears the hole in the face plate. 2-Cut a 1-1/4" slot in the discharge duct. Be
careful to cut the slot on the correct side of the duct so the damper will open away
Page 26 M-ANM-300000-CMAC-MST-000005_Rev A
from the main duct. This is important as the damper swings open in one direction
only. 3-Secure face plate to ductwork with 6 x 3/8'' sheet metal screws provided.

MECHANICAL PRESSURE RELIEF DAMPER

Foreman will inform the Site Engineer to get the replacement.
• All grilles and diffusers will be checked against the relevant schedules by the HVAC
Foreman prior to the commencement of installation, ensuring they are of the correct
type and size as reviewed and approved by the Project Consultant.

Proceed the Installation:

• Install sub-frame in the duct opening as manufacturer’s instructions and ensure that
grilles and diffusers will be installed correctly as per the direction of air flow.
• Prepare the grilles and diffusers by installing sealing material to the internal side of the
mating flange, carefully locate the grilles and diffusers into sub-frame and locate locking
screws and tighten until correct level and the alignment is attached.
• After final alignment, carefully tighten the grilles and diffusers until an airtightness is
achieved.
