Simple Present Tense & Present Continuous Tense
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
The students will be able to learn:
• to distinguish between simple present and present
continuous tense.
• how and when to use the two tenses.
• the formation of verbs in these tenses.
• to use these two tenses correctly in speech and writing.

use simple present tense and present continuous tense in writing.

differentiate between the two tenses and learn when they are used in a
sentence.

form the sentences using the tenses in proper structure.

Simple Present Tense

Simple Present Tense is used when we talk about:


• a routine activity: For eg: We have dance lessons every Thursday.
: Ria/She goes for a walk every evening.
• habits: For eg- Mom loves to read a book before she sleeps.
• Fact: For eg- The Earth revolves around the Sun.
- The members of BTS sing very well.
STRUCTURE: SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

I, We (First Person )
You (Second Person ) For eg: I like; We go; They walk;

How do we frame Negative Statements using Simple Present Tense
1. Do you go to school by bus?
➢ No, I do not go to school by bus.

Structure

I, We, You, They do not + root form of the verb + rest of the sentence
All other plural subjects
For eg: I/We/ You/ They/ Our students do not like to bully others.

He, She, It
does not + root form of the verb + rest of the sentence
All other singular subjects
For eg: He/ She/ It/ Rahul/ Mom does not disturb anyone.
In Simple present tense, the verbs that are written with s/es
take does in questions, whereas verbs that are written
without s/es take do in the question.

• You are listening.
• All students are studying.
• I am teaching English.
• Rohan is not listening.
• They are playing outside.
• Kids are taking their lunch.
• We are talking.
• She is writing at the moment.
• He is learning tenses.
Present Continuous Tense

Present continuous tense is used:


• When an action is happening right now.
For eg: I am teaching.
• When an action is taking place in the present time but not at the
moment.
For eg: We are learning classical music.
Let’s try to understand the difference between the two
tenses.
SIMPLE PRESENT PRESENT CONTINUOUS
• I always go to school by bus. • My father is dropping me today.
SIMPLE PRESENT PRESENT CONTINUOUS

• My father cooks delicious • Now, he is cooking a new

SIMPLE PRESENT PRESENT CONTINUOUS
• They usually pray to God • Don’t disturb them. They are

Simple Present Tense is used to express everyday actions(Habits, permanent
qualities/ situations, facts)
For eg:
I live in Bangalore.
You are generous.
I like ice-cream.
Present Continuous Tense is used to express actions which are happening right
now/ actions which will continue for a short while.
For eg:
I am talking to you now.
You are listening to me.
I am going to bed now. Good Night!

How do we frame Negative Statements using Present continuous tense.
