Content Standards for Writing

According to the Pedagogical Guidelines (MNE, 2007), Level 4 standards:


o Content standard 1: learners will be able to use written language for a
variety of purposes and with a variety of audiences.
o Content standard 2: learners will be able to use a range of writing skills
and strategies in the writing process to complete a variety of writing tasks.
o Content standard 3: learners will be able to recognize and apply the
cultural and rhetorical aspects of different text types to write appropriately.
o Content standard 4: learners will be able to demonstrate project work
skills to complete a variety of tasks effectively, individually or in groups.

According to CEFR (), Lever B2 writing standards:


I can write clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects related to my
interests. I can write an essay or report, passing on information or giving
reasons in support of or against a particular point of view. I can write letters
highlighting the personal significance of events and experiences.

These can be further delineated as follows:

Text Production: At the B2 level, the CEFR emphasizes the ability to produce
clear and detailed texts on various topics. This includes writing essays,
reports, or articles that follow a coherent structure and logical development.

Argumentative Writing: The CEFR encourages the development of


argumentative writing skills at the B2 level. Learners should be able to
express viewpoints on a variety of topics, providing well-structured
arguments supported by relevant examples and evidence.

Narrative Writing: The standard for narrative writing at the B2 level involves
the ability to produce coherent and engaging narratives. Learners should be
able to create stories with a clear sequence of events, well-developed
characters, and appropriate descriptive language.

Letter Writing: According to the CEFR, learners at the B2 level should be able
to write different types of formal and informal letters. This includes the ability
to compose personal letters, formal business letters, and emails that follow
the conventions of the genre.

Review Writing: The CEFR emphasizes the development of critical writing


skills at the B2 level, including the ability to write reviews of various media,
such as books, films, or products. Learners should be able to provide a critical
analysis, evaluating the strengths and weaknesses and offering
recommendations or opinions based on specific criteria.

Writing Competencies related to 2nd year Bac program


Text Production Competency: This involves the ability to organize and
structure written content effectively, using appropriate grammar, vocabulary,
and cohesive devices to ensure clarity and coherence in the text. Students
need to demonstrate their proficiency in creating well-structured essays,
reports, or articles with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion.

Argumentative Writing Competency: Students should demonstrate the ability
to present well-reasoned arguments supported by relevant evidence and
examples. This includes the use of persuasive language, logical reasoning, and
the incorporation of counterarguments to strengthen their positions and
engage the reader effectively.

Narrative Writing Competency: This entails the skill to develop engaging


narratives with well-defined characters, settings, and plot developments.
Students should be able to demonstrate their proficiency in employing
descriptive language, effective storytelling techniques, and a coherent
narrative structure to maintain the reader's interest throughout the story.

Letter Writing Competency: Students need to demonstrate their


understanding of the conventions and formats of different types of letters,
such as formal and informal letters, emails, and business correspondence.
This includes the use of appropriate salutations, greetings, and closing
remarks, as well as the ability to convey messages clearly and appropriately
based on the purpose and audience of the letter.

Review Writing Competency: This involves the ability to critically analyze and
evaluate various forms of media, such as books, films, or products. Students
should demonstrate their proficiency in articulating their opinions, providing
a balanced assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the subject, and
offering well-supported recommendations or critiques based on specific
criteria, ensuring a coherent and persuasive review.
