U Value Calculation

This document provides a calculation of the U-value for a proposed wall section. It lists the materials in the wall and their thicknesses. It then calculates the thermal resistance of each material and the overall thermal resistance of the wall. The final calculated U-value of the wall is 0.2122 W/(m2.K).

U- Value calculation For a Wall

Green System Integration

Ayush Sonkeshariya
A/3387/2020, 3C
Wall Section proposed:

12 mm Thk. Gypsum Board

100 mm Thk. Mineral wool

6 mm Thk. Plywood

12 mm Thk. Plaster

200 mm Thk. AAC Block

12 mm Thk. Plaster
As per ECBC 2017, part 1, Building Envelope, Annexure 1 U – Value Calculation:

𝑅𝑖 = 𝑡𝑖 / 𝑘𝑖 Thermal Resistance of ACC Block

𝑅1 = 0.2 / 0.184 = 1.0869
where,
Thermal Resistance of 12 mm plaster
𝑅2 = 0.012 / 0.721 = 0.0166
𝑅𝑖 is the thermal resistance of material 𝑖, m2 .K/W
𝑡𝑖 is the thickness of material 𝑖, m Thermal Resistance of 100 mm Mineral Wool
𝑘𝑖 is the thermal conductivity of material 𝑖, W/(m.K) 𝑅3 = 0.1 / 0.030 = 3.3333

Thermal Resistance of 12 mm Gypsum Board

𝑅4 = 0.012 / 0.18 = 0.0666
𝑅𝑇 = (1 /ℎ𝑖 )+ (1/ ℎ𝑜) + 𝑅1 + 𝑅2 + 𝑅3 + ⋯
Thermal Resistance of 6 mm Plywood
where, 𝑅5 = 0.006 / 0.174 = 0.0344

𝑅𝑇 is the total thermal resistance, m2 .K/W

ℎ𝑖 is the inside air heat transfer coefficient, W/(m2 .K) 𝑅𝑇 = (1 /9.36 )+ (1/ 19.86) + 1.0869 + 2(0.0166) + 3.3333 + 0.0666 + 0.0344
ℎ𝑜 is the outside air heat transfer coefficient, W/(m2 .K)
𝑅𝑇 = 4.7115
𝑅1 is the thermal resistance of material 1, m2 .K/W
𝑅2 is the thermal resistance of material 2, m2 .K/W 𝑅𝑇 = 4.7115 m2 .K/W
𝑅3 is the thermal resistance of material 3, m2 .K/W
ℎ𝑖 = 9.36 𝑊 (𝑚2 ⁄ .𝐾)
ℎ𝑜 = 19.86 𝑊 (𝑚2 ⁄ .𝐾) 𝑈 = 1 / 4.7115
𝑈 = 0.2122 W/(m2 .K)

𝑈 = 1 / 𝑅𝑇

where,
𝑈 is the overall heat transfer coefficient, W/(m2 .K)
Hence, the U – Value of the proposed wall is 0.2122 W/(m2 .K)
