Question 1 (A) : Describe The Types and Explain A Communication Network

A communication network allows computers and devices to share resources by connecting them through communication devices like modems, cables, phone lines, and satellites. There are different types of networks including local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and the Internet. A LAN connects devices over a small local area through high-speed data transfer and is usually owned by a single organization. A WAN spans a larger geographic area, such as a country or the world. To implement a reliable network, considerations must be given to utilization, performance, and flexibility to support current and future users, meet expected response times and storage needs, and allow for easy expansion.

Question 1(a)

Describe the types and explain a communication

network.

z A communication network is a collection of

computers and devices connected together via
communications devices such as modems, cables,
telephone lines and satellites that allow user to
share resources

1
Question 1(a)
Types of network include LAN, WAN, Internet, Peer to peer.

2
Local Area Network (LAN)
z A cluster of interconnected microcomputers
forming a network
z Usually carry data at high speeds & owned by one
z Originated as a
description of size
z Cover a small local
area

3
Facilities of LAN
zA variety of facilities are
required to enable networks to
function.
zFileServer
zPrint Server
zCommunications Server

4
Facilities of LAN - File Server
z Facilitatesthe storage of documents which
can be retrieved and updated as necessary.
z Enable network users to access application
software install in one file server
z Enable user access control

5
Facilities of LAN - Print Server
z Provides each network user with high-
speed printing facilities.

6
Facilities of LAN - Communications Server

z Linksnetwork users to a variety of

communication devices by telephone line
connections.

7
Client / Server LAN
z Network in which one or more computers act
as a server and other computers on the
network can request services from server

8
Wide Area Network (WAN)
z Network that covers large geographic area
z Internet is world's largest WAN

9
Wide Area Network (WAN)
z Whereas a local area network serves the
requirements of an organization for
interdepartmental communications, a wide area
network serves a wide geographic area and may in
fact embrace a whole country or even the world.
z The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers) formally recognizes as local networks
those networks having a maximum total length of
6000 feet. Beyond that length, networks are
classified as WANs.
z Another definition of WANs is that they simply
connect two or more LANs together
10
Internet use of Peer-to-Peer (P2P)
z Enables users with same networking
software to connect to each other's hard
disks and exchange files directly

Question 1(b)
How to implement a reliable network.

To implement a reliable network, Utilization,

Performance and flexibility are three major
issues to consider in implementing a good
network.

12
Factors to Consider - Utilization
z The number of current and future users must be
known or estimated.
z Different choices in cabling, structure (topology)
and hardware will determine the performance
levels given certain number of users.
z If there are too many users relative to the
capabilities of the LAN, then the performance
will deteriorate.

13
Factors to Consider - Performance
z The expected response time and storage
capacity must be determined in order to be
able to specify the correct components and
its true cost.

14
Factors to Consider - Flexibility
z The ease with which new users can be
added or removed from a system is
important to the organization.
z Certain configurations allow for a limited
number of new PCs to be added, after
which costly expansion work has to be
done.
